James Baldwin= author who wrote about struggling economically 5 million african americans move to urban north. Most minorities lived in slums of the city.







¼ of American population was under poverty level National Housing Act tore down old houses and built bigger ones. New cabinet for president concentrated on improving housing conditions.

Urban Renewal 



National Housing Act put in place to construct new houses, and give every American family decent living conditions. Houses were torn down and new complexes were created.



Some cases like the Barrios in LA were torn down to build Dodgers Stadium. The poor moved from one ghetto to another, and the construction did not help them at all.

Natives and Mexicans Struggle Mexicans got citizenship with annexation of southern US in 19th century. ► WWII, braceros were allowed into US. ► Mexicans formed units in the military especially for them. ► Mexican veterans like Felix Longoria were discriminated against after the war. ►

Snyder Act grants citizenship to Natives. 1944, establish the National Congress of American Indians. 65,000 natives volunteer for the service. Outsiders and farmers took the land the tribes left when they went to war.

Termination Policy  Government gave up its effort toward natives.  Cut all economic support, discontinued the reservation system, and divided their lands.  This policy relocated 35,000 natives to cities, where they were unable to find work because of lack of skills and racial discrimination.  The federal cut of programs for the natives also left them without access to medical care.
