APPLICATIONS

Alcoa developed aluminum alloy AA 7065 to provide higher strength and similar or improved fracture toughness relative to legacy 7000-Series alloys at intermediate product thicknesses of 1.0 to 6.0 inches (25.4 to 152.4 mm).

The combination of high strength and fracture toughness properties and corrosion resistance makes 7065 suitable as a replacement for 7010, 7050, 7075, 7475 and other alloys for critical intermediate thickness applications. These include but are not limited to spar, rib, and integrally machined structural parts for new, derivative, or retrofit aircraft.

Alloy 7065 plate is available in T7451 and T7651 tempers. The corrosion resistance (exfoliation and stress corrosion cracking resistance) of 7065 is comparable to that of legacy 7000-Series for a given temper, as demonstrated in both accelerated and seacoast environments.

COMMERCIAL STATUS Alcoa alloy 7065 plate is covered by AMS 4351 (T7651 temper) and AMS 4361 (T7451 temper). Material design allowables approved by MMPDS are available.

MECHANICAL PROPERTIES The following tables and figures provide mechanical properties for 7065 in the T7651 and T7451, and compare 7065 properties with 7050. Alloy 7065 plate offers superior strength properties with similar or improved fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth resistance. The minimum guaranteed S-N fatigue performance (Kt=1, LT direction) for both tempers is the same as that for 7050-T7451 (AMS 4050).

CORROSION RESISTANCE The exfoliation corrosion and SCC resistance of 7065 in the T7651 and T7451 tempers is the same as 7050 in the equivalent temper, and superior to 7xxx alloys in T6 tempers. The minimum guaranteed EXCO (ASTM G34) is EB for both tempers. The minimum guaranteed SCC resistance (ASTM G47) in the ST direction is 25 ksi (172 MPa) for the T7651 temper, and 35 ksi (241 MPa) for the T7451 temper. The good corrosion resistance of 7065 has been demonstrated in both accelerated and seacoast environments.
