Objective Understand how the United States involvement in Latin America and Asia increased greatly as a result of the war and continues today.

Annexation of Hawaii

Why did we want Hawaii? Imperialism – The Economic and Political Control of a Powerful Nation over a Weaker One. Many industrialized countries all over the world were expanding via imperialism during this time frame. (1870's-1914)

Hawaii had a lot to offer We wanted Hawaii for three reasons: 1) Great soil to grow sugar cane!

2) Great Harbor for a naval base (Pearl Harbor) 3) Great supply point for trips to and from Asia.

We took Hawaii Sugar Plantations were plentiful in Hawaii. Plantations required cheap labor and people began going to Hawaii to work, including Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Filipinos, Spanish and Puerto Ricans.

U.S. Plantation Investors were concerned they would lose their investments to foreigners.

Why did the US want to expand? 1) To Compete with European Expansion around the world

2) Build up America's Navy 3) Increase foreign markets and resources 4) Share American Ideals with 'less fortunate' people.

Hawaii Timeline 1778 – First European Settlement 1810 – Hawaiian Monarchy is Created 1826 – Hawaii and US sign trade and navigation treaties 1876 – U.S. gets sole trade rights with Hawaii U.S. owned plantations begin to increase 1887 - U.S. acquires Pearl Harbor as a supply port 1890 – McKinley Tariff Act places tariffs on sugar imports – Plantation owners were not pleased! 1893.... We take Hawaii....

Monroe Doctrine Proclamation in 1823 by President James Monroe. Basically, it warned European nations not to get involved in political matters in Central and South America. The Doctrine was intended to show that the United States was the only country that could influence such political matters. Further, several countries in South American had recently undergone revolutions against their European colonial owners and ended up with republican governments. The United States agreed with their political philosophy and did not want to see those newly free nations become European colonies again.
