“I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” (Nelson Mandela at his trial in 1964) [...]We have lost an influential, courageous, and profoundly good human being, he no longer belongs to us – he belongs to the ages.Through his fierce dignity and strong will to sacrifice his own freedom for the freedom of others, Madiba transformed South Africa. His journey from a prisoner to a president embodied the promise that human beings and countries can change for the better.I am one of the countless millions who drew inspiration from Nelson Mandela’s life. My very first political action was a protest against apartheid. I studied his words and his writings. The day that he was released from prison gave me a sense of what human beings can do when they’re guided by their hopes and not by their fears. And like so many around the globe, I cannot imagine my own life without the example that Nelson Mandela set, and so long as I live I will do what I can to learn from him. A free South Africa at peace with itself – that’s an example to the world, and that’s Madiba’s legacy to the nation he loved. We will not likely see the likes of Nelson Mandela again. So it falls to us as best we can to follow the example that he set: to make decisions guided not by hate, but by love; to never discount the difference that one person can make; to struggle for a future that is worthy of his sacrifice. For now, let us pause and give thanks for the fact that Nelson Mandela lived – a man who took history in his hands, and bent the arc of the moral universe toward justice. May God bless his memory and keep him in peace. (Adapted from Barack Obama’s speech after Mandela’s death; The Associated Press Dec. 05 2013)

Thursday,

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: 1. Summarize the main ideas of Obama's speech using your own words and explain the metaphor "[...] a man who took history in his hands and bent the arc of moral universe toward justice [...]" ( 8-10 lines) 2. Mandela's words resemble a rousing speech made in Washington (USA) in 1963: who made it and what issues do the two speeches have in common? Considering that racism is still a problem in the 21st Century, do you think there might be hopes for a better future? (12-15 lines)

SECONDA SIMULAZIONE TERZA PROVA INGLESE Name: Class: Data:

Prejudice and contempt destroy society “The divide of race has been America's constant curse. Each new wave of immigrants gives new targets to old prejudices. Prejudice and contempt, cloaked in the pretense of religious or political conviction, are no different. They have nearly destroyed us in the past. They plague us still. They fuel the fanaticism of terror. They torment the lives of millions in fractured nations around the world. These obsessions cripple both those who are hated and, of course, those who hate, robbing both of what they might become.” Bill Clinton quotes (American 42nd US President (1993-2001), b.1946)

Americans' Views of Immigration Growing More Positive by Jeffrey M. Jones, April 2006 (Gallup Business Journal) While the issue of illegal immigration has attracted attention from the media and political leaders, Americans' views of immigration more generally have become increasingly positive. The poll finds most Americans, saying immigration is "a good thing for this country today." In fact, the percentage of Americans who say this in the current poll, is the most positive viewpoint a survey has measured since the question was first asked, in 2001: 68% percent of whites, 60% of blacks, and 76% of Hispanics think immigration is good for the country today. Americans took a more critical view of immigration following the Sept. 11 terror attacks; this perspective persisted for several years on a range of immigration attitudes, but that effect appears to have dissipated.

American Republican Party on Immigration Source: 2012 Republican Party Platform , Aug 27, 2012

Our nation has experienced rapid and dramatic demographic changes over the past decade, including an aging population; a reduced number of marriages; a decline of religion; and above all, a rapidly growing population of racial and ethnic minorities. In this country, the rule of law guarantees equal treatment to every individual, including more than one million immigrants to whom we grant permanent residence every year. That is why we oppose any form of amnesty for those who intentionally violate the law. Granting amnesty only rewards and encourages more law breaking. State enforcement efforts in the workplace must be welcomed, not attacked. When Americans need jobs, it is absolutely essential that we protect them from illegal labor in the workplace.

QUESTIONS

1. Give a summary of the three American points of view on immigration, using your own words.(About 80 words) 2. The first glimpse of the Statue of Liberty was an emotional experience

remembered for life for the immigrants approaching New York harbor: engraved on the base of the Statue of Liberty are the words from Emma Lazarus's poem, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." Today this sentence seems contradictory because people in general have very mixed feelings about the issue of immigration:do you think immigrants are to be considered a blessing or a burden? Justify your ideas.(About 120 words)
