Confederation to Constitution Note Guide

NOW WHAT????

Wasn’t signed by all states until 1781 due to concerns over who would control Western lands!

Weaknesses of the Articles • The Federal government lacked power to: – Enforce laws they created – Tax citizens to raise money – Regulate trade

• • • •

No Executive Branch No Judicial Branch (courts) 9 of 13 states needed to pass a law 13 of 13 states needed to amend a law

Successes of the Articles • Provided a form of government through the Revolutionary War • Passed the Land Ordinance of 1785 • Passed the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 • Led to Constitutional Convention – creation of our Constitution

Land Ordinance of 1785 • Law that came up with a system to divide up and sell the land west of the Appalachian Mountains or “Northwest Territory” • Divided land into 6 mile – square plots called townships

Northwest Ordinance of 1787 • Described how the “Northwest Territory” was to be governed – When 5,000 free males who owned at least 50 acres they could elect an assembly – When 60,000 people, could apply to be a state – Freedom of religion – Slavery banned – Trial by jury

Saying Good-bye is hard… • Writing a Eulogy for our first form of government, the Articles of Confederation. – Should be written in formal language – When were they “born” – Briefly summarize the Articles (successes & weaknesses) – Describe their legacy (how did they affect the country we live in today) – When did they “die”
