Many graduates from our courses have gone on to lead profitable businesses across the globe, to occupy important positions in the public service, and to be senior partners in leading law firms in Australia and overseas. Studying with the Faculty of Business, Government & Law gives you a specialist qualification as well as the broad range of knowledge and skills needed to be successful in today’s competitive working environment. Many of our courses lead to professional accreditation in areas such as accounting, finance, law, urban and
regional planning, building and construction management and business informatics. This means that when you graduate, you can move straight into a job in your chosen profession. We also offer a wide range of specialist degrees in areas such as politics and international relations, tourism management and justice studies, all of which allow you to pursue a meaningful and rewarding career. If you already have a degree then we offer a range of postgraduate courses that will give you professional qualifications in areas such as law

We see these three values as forming a triple bottom line which shapes our activities. We recognise that there are ongoing tensions between them. For example, enterprise and innovation does not always support sustainability, while implementing sustainable futures may not always be in the short term benefits of particular communities; and so on. We see such tensions as a source of creativity in how we might think and act as a faculty. Moreover, our challenge is to balance these values.
Law grad’s vision for his village At such a young age, few people have accomplished as much as Bal Kama originally from a small village in Papua New Guinea. Not only did Bal graduate from the University of Canberra with a double degree, earning a Bachelor of Law (Honours) and a Bachelor of Arts in 2013, he has established his own charitable organisation, the Kama Scholars Foundation, and has been a powerful advocate for impoverished people in Papua New Guinea.

Bal has also worked as a consultant for the United Nations and as a paralegal.
He was also invited to present his thesis on Papua New Guinea’s constitutional crisis at the Australian Law Council in Sydney. At the 2013 Distinguished Alumni Awards, Bal’s hard work and achievements were recognised with a Special Commendation.

MELBOURNE (CHADSTONE & WAVERLY)

University of Canberra courses are now also offered at the Holmesglen Institute of TAFE’s Chadstone and Waverley campuses. The following Faculty of Business, Government & Law courses are offered:
Situated on 120 hectare (296.4 acres), the Canberra campus in the suburb of Bruce is a haven of clean air, tall trees and native wildlife, including parrots, honeyeaters, cockatoos and resident kangaroos. Despite its serene location, the campus is within walking distance to the shopping and entertainment complex of Belconnen, and just 12 minutes by regular bus service or car from Canberra’s Civic Centre. The majority of our students study in Canberra where they have access to specialised facilities including the e-Court (see p 41 for details) in addition to the main University of Canberra Library and student accommodation facilities.

HONG KONG The faculty has partnered with the Hong Kong Baptist University to offer the Bachelor of Accounting, Bachelor of Business Administration, and Bachelor of Commerce. Commencing in 2015 in partnership with Lingnan Institute of Further Education, we will also be offering the Bachelor of Business Studies and Bachelor of Event & Tourism Management.
NINGBO (CHINA) The faculty has partnered with the Ningbo University to offer postgraduate management qualifications.

Flexible
At the Faculty of Business, Government & Law we know that many students are juggling a range of activities. Along with study, students have family, employment and other commitments like sport and hobbies. To enable students with greater access to unit content, lecturers and tutors, we have developed more flexible modes of delivery, giving you a greater opportunity to engage. Approaches being taken include: • A range of units and courses delivered fully online • Online consultation times with your lecturer and/or tutor so you can ask questions from home, work or even your favourite cafe • Online content for your unit so you can listen to lectures and other multimedia in your own time • Diverse online materials for researching and building greater understanding of content • Additional support through standalone learning modules to build specific skills Technology has enabled the Faculty of Business, Government & Law to offer students fully online, self-paced courses including the Bachelor of Business Studies, Bachelor of Economic Studies, and Bachelor of Political Studies. This means students can enrol in units and study at their own pace so long as they complete the unit within a year. Flexibility on this scale is a new approach for the University and aims to provide education for all students regardless of geography, time pressures, and other constraints.

INTERNSHIPS All Faculty of Business, Government & Law undergraduate students have the option of incorporating an internship to experience a real life work environment. Normally students undertake work integrated learning within either the private sector in their home region, interstate or in some cases overseas.

UC & Raiders partner up to support players Canberra Raiders players are able to access flexible University of Canberra degree programs under a new partnership. University of Canberra Vice-Chancellor Stephen Parker and Raiders CEO Don Furner signed a new Memorandum of Understanding between the club and the University’s Faculty of Business, Government & Law, to help Raiders players develop skills for their careers post sport and also to create new study and research opportunities. “The University of Canberra is committed to making flexible study options available to students for whom attending classes in the traditional way is difficult or not possible,” Professor Parker says. “This includes elite sports people, who need some flexibility to undertake study in ways that can be tailored to their own availability around training and game schedules. This arrangement specifically extends that flexibility to Raiders players. “As an Elite Athlete Friendly University, we are aware of the special needs of elite
sports people, but also of how beneficial it can be to balance the physical challenge of high performance sport, with the mental workout of university study. “I congratulate the Raiders on their commitment to education and I look forward to working with them on this partnership.”
“It’s a great initiative, a footy career can only last up to 10 years so it gives us the opportunity to better prepare for the rest of our lives,” Mr McIlwrick says. “There are a number of players who have wanted to study but haven’t been able to find time because of our football commitments, so it’s great for UC to be able to help us in between training sessions.”
The faculty is offering credit towards degrees to Raiders players who had completed a relevant diploma. Units are delivered mainly online, but with face-toface support, and with flexibility around the pace of study to allow players to work around their training schedule and the NRL season. In addition to providing study opportunities for players, the MoU also includes a commitment to explore opportunities for collaboration in research. Raiders player Matt McIlwrick is one of the athletes involved in the program and said it gives him a chance to better equip himself for life once he ends his rugby league career.

Make Real Choices about
ACCELERATE YOUR DEGREE Many Faculty of Business, Government & Law degrees allow students to choose an accelerated study program. Students who start as a full-time student in Semester One on the Canberra campus can choose to accelerate select degrees and finish study six months before standard fulltime students by enrolling in the University of Canberra’s unique Winter Term. These select degrees are indicated under ‘Length of Study’ in the course listings in this guide.
COMBINE STUDY IN MULTIPLE AREAS The Faculty of Business, Government & Law courses provide various opportunities for students to incorporate additional fields of study via double degrees, open majors, and open electives.
DOUBLE DEGREES Double degrees combine two bachelor courses into a coordinated course of study in a significantly shorter period of time than the two individual degrees would take if done separately. Double degrees typically extend the period of study by one or more years. Courses that have one or more double degree options are indicated in the course listings in this guide and summary. Lists of available double degrees including the length of study of the combined program are provided in the tables at the back of this guide.

OPEN MAJORS As an alternative to a double degree, students undertaking a standard full-time or part-time program in most Faculty of Business, Government & Law courses can incorporate an ‘open major’ of related units into their course without extending the length of study. These open majors provide coherent study in the specified area and are included on student transcripts. Information on open majors within the Faculty of Business, Government & Law is provided throughout this guide and courses that can incorporate these are indicated. In addition to the large range of open majors offered by the Faculty of Business, Government & Law, students can also choose from majors offered by all other University of Canberra faculties; Faculty of Arts & Design, Faculty of Education, Science, Technology & Maths, and Faculty of Health.
ADD HONOURS All high performing undergraduate Faculty of Business, Government & Law students studying at the Canberra campus have the option of pursuing an honours program. Non-law students can undertake the one year Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) program while law students can choose to undertake honours as part of the Bachelor of Laws.

The Bachelor of Commerce provides students with a broad foundation in contemporary business during the first year of study. 1. COURSE TITLE Components in LIGHT TYPE do not form part of the degree name – in this case students graduate with a BACHELOR OF COMMERCE although their transcript identifies the Accounting major. 2. ACCOUNTING Accounting was the first field that the University of Canberra (then the Canberra College of Advanced Education) began teaching in 1967. Since that time the University has developed a strong reputation for producing exceptional accounting graduates.
The Bachelor of Accounting and the Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Accounting are professionally accredited by Charted Practicing Accountants Australia (CPA), the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA), and the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA).
Accounting is called ‘the language of business’ because of the critical role it holds in reporting financial information about a business entity to many different groups of people. The University of Canberra accounting courses draw on the faculty’s strengths to provide fully rounded accounting graduates able to work in public or private sector organisations with equal ease and possessing strong skills in critical thinking.
Careers that can be built on a University of Canberra accounting qualification include: • Professional accountant • Public sector accountant • Management accountant • Financial accountant Students who do not meet the entry requirements for the Bachelor of Accounting but who gain entry into the Bachelor of Commerce are eligible to transfer into the Bachelor of Accounting at the end of their first year, subject to achieving a strong grade point average.
Mission possible for exceptional UC students A challenge to explore business expansion was no mission impossible for two University of Canberra students, who were national finalists in the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia (ICAA) Mission Exceptional competition. The team of Liam Smith and Connor Schafferius won one of six places in the final of the national university competition held in October 2013 at the Sydney Theatre.

“We learnt so much about what it takes to be a chartered accountant,” Bachelor of Commerce student Liam says. “It shows we are capable of achieving that next level of strategic critical thinking.” For Connor, a second-year finance student, finding out they had made the finals was “quite possibly the happiest day of my life”.
“I was really happy to find out that sometimes putting in a lot of effort really does pay off,” he says. The competition required the pair to present a business case advising whether or not the mock company Questiko Enterprises should outsource their manufacturing overseas. “We covered the strategic, operational, financial and social implications of the opportunity,” Liam says. The team presented their work at the final to a board of five including the chief financial officer of American Express Australia and New Zealand and the director of the Australian Red Cross. “Having the opportunity to present to a board of Australian business luminaries was an amazing experience,” he says.

The Bachelor of Accounting is designed to meet the needs of students seeking accreditation with professional accounting associations in Australia. The program provides a strong dedicated focus on the key skills needed by professional accountants in areas specific to the accounting profession as well as key business skills such as critical thinking and research skills. Students invent site safety app Creating an app for construction workers to sign on or off site using just their smart phone won University of Canberra students over $35,000 in prize money at the Innovation ACT awards. Mitchell Harmer and Alexandria Garlan were part of a team of four ACT students who won the competition’s major prize ($25,000), as well as the ACT Government prize ($10,000) and the pitch award ($750), to put towards perfecting their application ‘Sign on site’. In her third year of construction management, Ms Garlan is also a project manager for Banyan Construction and say safety on site needs to be made a priority, with their app being “a good start to changing the industry”. “The app is basically like a Facebook check-in for construction sites,” Mr Harmer, an entrepreneur and innovation student, says. “It’s a simple, user-friendly interface but there’s a lot going on behind the scenes for accurate reporting, which will ensure workers’ safety and could also save company money.” Right: Alexandria Garlan and Mitchell Harmer won $35,000 for inventing a smart phone app to help make construction sites safer

SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP Students have the chance to engage with the professional community through the unit The Social Entrepreneurial Project. This unit is available to all undergraduate students and has a student-driven approach in which you are required to undertake a community group project of a minimum of 75 hours under the supervision and mentorship of both a professional practitioner and an academic mentor. This project provides students with the opportunity to pursue a project with a focus on entrepreneurship and social responsibility.
From business start up to wind up in a semester One of the ways Greg Boland uses work integrated learning in his unit is in conjunction with the Young Achiever Awards program. Volunteer business mentors come to the University of Canberra one afternoon a week throughout the semester to help groups of students set up their own trading company. These companies compete against other tertiary student companies throughout Australia.

According to Greg, students get “a real buzz” out of the experience, and they develop good relationships and networks with business mentors. Business mentors enjoy the rewards of helping young people find their confidence. One of the university’s high-achieving Business, Government and Law students, Jason Prowd, said, the experience in the Innovation unit was “a good way to experience the real world; an opportunity
to put theory into practice”. He said he had learnt valuable “soft skills” such as negotiation skills and operational skills – and, importantly, he had “learnt how to ask”. Jason said that even though at first it seemed a bit difficult asking for sponsorship for their business, he found that people are “more than willing” to help if you ask them.

Graduate changes the face of finance Michael Miller wants to change the way people see personal finance. As the owner of the MLC Advice Centre in Canberra, Michael wants to make financial planning easier to use and more accessible to younger people. “We’re not all old men in stuffy offices, we’re here and we’re ready to help,” Michael says. To fuel his road to success, Michael credits his University of Canberra education and professors for helping steer him in the right direction. Danielle goes from small steps to the big apple Danielle Harmer believes the knowledge, skills and self-confidence she developed at the University of Canberra helped her secure work at IBM, the New York Times (NYT) and now Fairfax.

“While studying at UC, I got a job on the IBM jobsearch helpdesk. It was a seemingly small step, but it led to me being offered a graduate position in Sydney with IBM Australia. I worked my way up the ranks and was involved in a range of projects for big companies. I had great managers and learned a lot from them. After five years of hard work and some successful projects under my belt, I landed a role as a business analyst,” Danielle says. While she was succeeding in her role at IBM, Danielle was planning her next big move – to New York City. Once she had solid experience with IBM under her belt, it was time to take the plunge and move in 2009.

After a four-hour interview with various executives, Danielle landed a position as a business analyst in the New York Times marketing team. “Working for the NYT was a dream come true. I was involved in multiple projects, including a lead in implementing a new pay model for online subscribers. A lot of people didn’t believe we could move the NYT to a paid online subscriber base, but the numbers said it would work.” So what’s next for Danielle Harmer? “I would love to work for Google one day, and perhaps get back to the US. But in the meantime, I’m working for Fairfax as head of product for the Australian Financial Review.”

“It’s really exciting,” she says. “I wanted a really great exchange experience, but also something challenging. At first I thought there’s no way I could get into Oxford but then I read through some of their requirements and I thought I could potentially meet what they needed, so I just thought I’d give it a go and luckily I was accepted!” Her Oxford experience includes units in service marketing and business finance with a particular interest in innovation, management and strategy as well as business entrepreneurship.

Sarah partly credits her success to the support provided to her by two of her tutors at the University. “They’ve just been amazing throughout my whole experience at UC,” she says. The 26-year-old believes her strong involvement in student life and industry networking through workshops organised by the University helped her secure the exchange program place. “I’ve got a lot of enthusiasm and that’s what I like about Oxford. The corporation was formed to implement the ‘Circuit Breaker Program’ which was developed by Wayne to support the rehabilitation of Indigenous prisoners in the corrective services system. Wayne developed the Circuit Breaker Program upon discovering the limited sentencing options available to magistrates. Less than a year after graduating, Wayne was already making a difference in the community. He presented his program to the Federal Government House Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs and it was following this that the Narragunnawali Aboriginal Corporation was formed. Wayne’s support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people doesn’t stop there, he also lectures a number of units at the University of Canberra including Indigenous Cultural Studies and Indigenous Australians and the Law.

LAW A law degree is one of the most versatile degrees. It is a golden ticket to the world of work in Australia and overseas. For many law students, the study of law equips them to succeed as a legal practitioner in business or government. Others use the degree as the basis for success in banking, technology, marketing, construction, human resource management and other areas. Many law graduates work as solicitors, independently or with other lawyers and specialists. They advise individuals, businesses, government agencies and other organisations about the law. Law graduates prepare documentation such as contracts, wills, tenders, and company incorporations. Solicitors represent members of the community through legal matters ranging from divorce proceedings, property settlements, injury cases, debt retrieval, to contractual disputes. The University of Canberra gives a strong grounding in principles and processes for success in specialties such as personal injury, industrial relations, administrative, tax, family, criminal and intellectual property law. Some graduates go on to work as barristers or become professional advocates who appear on behalf of clients in commercial and criminal disputes in court. We pride

Commonwealth and State Governments employ a high number of lawyers in legal, policy, research and advisory roles. If you are considering a career in politics, a law degree will be very beneficial. A large percentage of parliamentarians and advisers are qualified lawyers. Representatives of industry and non-government bodies (e.g. environment advocates) are more effective if they understand the language of the law. Many commercial lawyers give something back to the community through pro bono work in their spare time. The teaching at the University of Canberra gives our graduates a sense of commercial realities and social responsibility. The Bachelor of Laws meets the academic requirements for admission to practice as a solicitor or barrister. It is recognised by the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory and the state of New South Wales. Through mutual recognition, this degree will serve as the basis for admission in all Australian jurisdictions.

Legal eagle soars on study tour University of Canberra law and politics alumnus Michael McCagh was one of just 17 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students chosen for the 32-day Aurora Indigenous Scholars International Study Tour in 2013, which saw him visit prestigious universities across the globe.

Summing it up as an “incredible trip”, the tour inspired him to make a difference in the legal industry. Shortly after graduating Michael returned home to Western Australia to work as an associate to Justice Andrew Beech in the Supreme
Court. He has also secured a position for 2015 as a Victorian Government Solicitor. “Law is an area where Indigenous people aren’t well-represented … hopefully I can help change that,” he says. “The more people who reach positions of power, the more likely it is that young Indigenous children will think one day they can too.”

NATIONAL SECURITY Security is now more than territorial integrity or a question of sovereignty. National security is no longer the sole domain of diplomats and soldiers. Security now includes our economic prosperity, our welfare and the nature of our society. As the nature of the state changes and new threats and challenges emerge, nations are reassessing their security interests on
a continual basis. Globalisation, non-state actors, the proliferation of weapons of all types, climate change, potential energy shortages and financial turmoil are forcing us to think of security in different ways. Security is to be achieved at home and abroad and the threats and challenges to security are increasingly complex and volatile. In this environment a comprehensive
and coordinated national, regional and international approach to security is required. The national security program at the University of Canberra focuses on how the nation can use all of its power and influence in a comprehensive and coordinated manner as part of a whole of government approach to national security.
The National Security Lectures The National Security Institute within the Faculty of Business, Government & Law conducts the monthly National Security Lecture Series. UC student interns in Washington Shaun Hutchinson visited Washington DC on the Uni-Capitol Washington Internship Program as part of his degree. Mr Hutchinson, who is originally from Darwin but moved to the ACT to study a double degree in politics and international relations and business administration at the University, was one of just 14 Australian university students selected for the two-month internship.

calls, took constituents on tours and did research for Senator Crapo’s office. He also visited the Pentagon, Supreme Court and Library of Congress. The 21-year-old said the whole experience “exceeded my expectations”.

SOCIAL SCIENCE The Bachelor of Social Science programs at the University of Canberra are built around a major in sociology and social policy and provide an opportunity for students to sociologically explore their contemporary social worlds. Scholarships, CSP & Fees Scholarships The University has a number of scholarships available to all students, including postgraduate, undergraduate, domestic and international students, such as the Chancellor’s Scholarship for Academic Excellence – awarded to current school leavers with an ATAR of 95 or above. In addition to academic excellence and discipline areas, the University also offers specific scholarships for Indigenous students, rural and regional students, and women and men in non-traditional areas of study.
Commonwealth Supported Place Every year, the Government allocates a number of Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) to higher education providers where it agrees to make a contribution towards the cost of students’ university fees. What this essentially means is that the Government subsidises part of the student’s costs, making fees much lower. FEES HECS-HELP is a loan available to eligible students enrolled in Commonwealth Supported Places and covers all or part of the student contribution amount. You will not have to repay your debt until you start earning above the minimum payment threshold.

RECOMMENDATIONS
The University of Canberra offers alternative entry pathways to students who do not meet the normal entry requirements. One alternative pathway is through the University of Canberra College, which offers programs specially designed to prepare students for University study.
The University of Canberra offers pathways into a range of degrees in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane in partnership with local TAFE institutes. Go to our dedicated websites to see if there is a pathway for opportunity that is right for you.
The University of Canberra recognises that an ATAR is not always the best measure of your ability or determination to succeed at university. Eligible Year 12 school, college or TAFE students can secure an offer from the University by arranging a recommendation from their principal. This scheme applies to every secondary school in Australia. An ATAR score is not required to be eligible for entry under this scheme. Offers are made in the December UAC Early Round.
UC-CONNECT is for domestic school leavers who wish to qualify for university while also upgrading their study skills and preparing for tertiary study. UC-START enables students to start studying subjects from their chosen degree. On successful completion, they will gain entry to the University of Canberra for the remainder of the degree. UC-PREP is for domestic students who have not studied for some time and wish to qualify and prepare for study at the University of Canberra. DEAN’S RECOMMENDATIONS Under special circumstances, the Dean has the option to allow an offer to be made to a Year 12 student who just misses out on the course cut-off score. You do not need to specifically request this option. All eligible students who have applied through UAC will be considered.
ACCOMMODATION ON AND OFF CAMPUS The University of Canberra, Canberra campus, has on and off campus student accommodation for over 2,400 people from Australia and around the world. The student accommodation office can also assist with finding accommodation for those who prefer to rent off-campus apartments or share-houses. A Homestay Program is available for international students who would like to stay with an Australian family. First year and all international students are guaranteed a room in University of Canberra approved accommodation.
