• The term sexual assault is an "umbrella" term that includes many different types of sex-related offenses. The Department of Defense (DoD) defines sexual assault for training purposes as follows: • intentional sexual contact, characterized by use of force, physical threat or abuse of authority or when the victim does not or cannot consent. • Sexual assault includes rape, nonconsensual sodomy (oral or anal sex), indecent assault (unwanted, inappropriate sexual contact or fondling), or attempts to commit these acts. • Sexual assault can occur without regard to gender or spousal relationship or age of victim.

• Sexual assault is actual or attempted sexual relations with another person against her or his will or without her or his consent. Sexual assault is a crime. Offenders can be prosecuted in a criminal court and if found guilty, an offender may go to prison.

“Why Report it?!?” • Serious impact to well being – medically (injury, STDs, pregnancy), and emotionally (Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD)) • Early treatment means early recovery • When reporting it: • Find a safe place or seek a person that you feel safe with ASAP! • Seek medical attention • For forensic evidence do not bath/shower and save the clothing 25

• Definition: A form of sex discrimination that involves unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, or other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. • DoD and Air Force policy on sexual harassment: • Zero Tolerance!!! • Reporting Sexual Assault • Confront the offender – ONLY IF YOU FEEL SAFE; tell that person how you felt • Report it to Cadre – if confronting the offender does not work • There should never be a retribution against someone reporting sexual harassment or sexual assault incidents 27
