Why Study Food Science?

 1.  2.  3.

 4.  5.

biodiversity entrepreneurs entry-level jobs integrated pest management (IPM) sustainable farming

6. How can studying food science help you manage your physical health? 7. Describe what the career of a food scientist is like. 8. What global issues might find solutions in food science? 9. How do advancements in food science promote environmental protection? 10. Give 3 examples of how food science promotes environmental protection.

Personal benefits- It will be helpful to you.  Protecting your health- you will have the knowledge to make better decisions about food choices.  Understanding food safety- People who study food science learn what it takes to keep the food supply safe for themselves & others.  Gaining practical skills- you can increase your cooking skills in the kitchen.  Exploring careers- the field of food science is so varied, many different careers are possible. 

 As

a personal benefit, studying food science can help you______. a. Choose a healthful way to prepare food b. Evaluate nutritional claims made for a food c. Discover an exciting career d. All of the above

 Entry-level

jobs- those that don’t require experience or training. Ex. Salad maker  Most careers in food science require a degree. People who do scientific research often get an advanced degree like a master’s or Ph.D. Ex. A scientist who finds food products & packaging that can go into space.  Entrepreneurs- they run businesses of their own. Ex. Freelance writing or operating a food processing business.

 Someone

with a degree in food science might be found working in a _______. a. Corn field b. Magazine office c. Health clinic d. All the above.

Food science can influence & improve the survival of a healthy world population. It is also a kind of “current event.”  Food for the world’s people- Food Scientists can try to understand some global situations, problems, and possible solutions. Cure for world hunger. Ex. Better preservation & distribution of food to where it is needed to avoid being wasted.  Biodiversity- Cultivating a variety of plants & animals. Ex. Scientists modify a plant so that it grows more quickly, yet still grows in poor soil. 

 Public

Health & Safety- Food scientists aim to make the food supply the best it can be nutritionally and ensure the safety of the food supply.  Effects on Families- Food science benefits families since scientists continue to learn more about nutrients and as a result, there are many healthful products that are safe to eat. Also, food science plays a role in processing and preserving foods to have quick meals.

Environmental protection goes hand in hand with agricultural improvement. Ex. Breeding hardier plants reduces the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Research continues into energyand cost-saving technologies for processing, storing, and transporting foods.  Sustainable farming- producing food by natural methods that fit local needs and conditions. Ex. A farmer might graze dairy cows on land that does not support crops. 

 Integrated

pest management (IPM)- controls pests with nonchemical deterrents. It is a system-wide approach of natural controls to help manage the land. Ex. Composting plant waste.

 An

advantage of integrated pest management is that it often_______. a. Cost less than using chemicals b. Upsets the environment less than chemical treatments c. Finds uses for previously unwanted plants or insects d. All of the above

A

practice that might be used in sustainable farming is _______. a. Enriching the soil with compost b. Adding vitamins to chicken feed c. Improving a fruit’s appearance with a safe wax coating. d. All of the above

 You

will learn what makes one food different from another.  Why people form food preferences.  You will see science at work in everyday life.  You will carry out lab experiments.  The information you gain will serve you well throughout life.

A

grandparent looks for help in choosing healthful foods for her changing nutrition needs.  Advances in feeding & breeding produce cattle that have leaner beef.  Scientists discover how to use a native weed in a nutritious feed for cows.
