History of the Company • Riga School of Cosmetics, a limited liability company (Ltd.), was founded in 1996

• The idea arose during discussions held in the Medical Society of the Republic of Latvia about education opportunities for beauticians in the new historical circumstances, when Latvia regained the independence • The situation with professionals in the field of beauty therapy called for the establishment of a vocational education institution for beauticians

History of the School • The founder of the institution for beauticians “Riga School of Cosmetics” took the initiative and created the national vocational secondary education program and obtained the license from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia

• A private school was established by the company “Riga School of Cosmetics”, Ltd. • The total number of students is 60 – 80 plus 100 – 150 working beauticians, the audience of refresher courses for improvement professional skills

• Since year 2001 the school is a member of the international organization for beauty therapists CIDESCO • Since year 2003 – a CIDESCO school

Structure of the Company • The principal activity of the Company is the provision of professional education for beauticians

• 5 employees – principal staff or personnel and about 16-17 additional employees • Main services and products the Company offers are the Vocational Secondary Education program, the Vocational Continuous Education program and the refresher courses for improvement professional skills

Programs offered by School • The National Vocational Secondary Education program combined with CIDESCO Syllabus – two academic years, 3120 hours – for individuals with a General Secondary Education background

• The National Vocational Continuous Education program combined with CIDESCO Syllabus – one academic year, 1200 hours – for individuals with a background of vocational secondary medical education • The refresher courses for improvement professional skills of the beauty therapy professionals

• Beauticians are subjected to certification in a similar manner as other medical specialists

• The Certificate gives rights to practice in the profession

• Certification process is being organized by the Association of Beauticians and Cosmetologists – CIDESCO section Latvia

Beauty therapy education in Latvia • Educational programs are offered by 7 educational establishments – colleges, schools and training centers. Degrees of the vocational education for beauty therapists: • Vocational Secondary Education – beautician/cosmetician, 2-3 years • 1th level of the Professional Higher Education - College Education - beauty specialist, 3 years



Lifelong learning programs for beauty therapists A problem of the beauty therapy education in Latvia is that despite the fact that the State has developed unified requirements and criteria for valuation of the teaching quality, there is still a phenomenon that at some private schools and training centers the observance of these defined unified requirements is not taking place in a full scope. As a result there are too many trained beauticians who are not enough skilled. This may cause an adverse effect on the reputation and prestige of the trade of beauticians.

Employees of the Company • Administration - 5 regular employees, working according to the employment agreement • Teaching team - about 16-17 persons, working on the basis of an Enterprise Agreement. They are not regular staff: teachers, lecturers, associate professors, physicians, practitioners in various fields of medicine, beauty therapists and other beauty specialists • 60 - 100 students, aged 18 to 50, with General Secondary Education or Vocational Medical Education • Periodically - small groups of beauticians - practitioners - the audience of refresher courses for improvement professional skills • Events for team building – schools and Principals “round“ anniversary celebration

Provision of training and development for teachers and students • Association’s refresher courses for beauticians with a decreased fee in Latvia and with a partial payment abroad

• Seminars, conferences, beauty exhibitions – free of charge • Participation in professional competitions for students with company’s payment - participation fee • Offering of job opportunities for the best graduates

Cooperation with social partners and other beauty schools •

The planed development and visions • School is planning to further develop the idea realized in the academic years 2006/2007, as well as the gained experience for implementation of National Secondary Continuous Education program in Latvia regions, namely in Latgale region. • To continue cooperation with SIA “Savanna” (Ltd.) in Daugavpils for organizing of refresher courses for beauticians in Latgale region • To open in the near future a branch office of the School in Daugavpils • To organize refresher courses outside Riga in other regions of Latvia on a regular basis
