He received his Doctor of Engineering Degree from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1976. After this, he joined National Chemical Laboratory, one of National Institutes under AIST/METI, Japan. He moved to Tokyo University of Science in 2004. His research is concerned with development of catalytic technologies with an artificial photosynthetic process. This includes catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to alcohols, solar hydrogen production from water by oxide semiconductor photoelectrode catalysts, and dye-sensitized solar cell. He received many awards such as Award of Japan Institute of Energy, Merits of Minister of Science and Technology Agency, Japan and so on. He is the author and co-author of over 280 peer-reviewed publications in the areas of CO and CO2 conversion, water splitting photocatalysts and dye-sensitized solar cell. He is the vice-president of Japan Solar Energy Society.
