GENERAL OVERVIEW

Library and Information Science in Turkey In 2002, Deparment of Knowledge Management founded in Başkent University in Ankara but in 2008 it was replaced with Department of Information and Technology Management. Kastamonu, Karabük, Çankırı, Fatih Sultan Mehmet, Medeniyet and Yıldırım Beyazıt Universities are in the foundation stage for LIS. 2002: Higher Education Council in Turkey merged the divisions of Librarianship, Archiving, and Documentation and Information at the Departments of Librarianship.

ANKARA UNIVERSITY Department of Information and Records Management • In 1964 It was named as “Information Management”. The Department especially focus on the archival studies and librarianship. • After first year, all of the students have to do internship for every year. I.U. offers Master programs since 1983 and Ph.D programe since 1984. I.U. offers two subdeparments; one Information Management and Technologies and the other is Archival Studies. Eventhough as a department it stopped taking student during the 1969-1974, it is one of the most frequented universities. According to the rules and regulations of the university in general and Faculty of Letter in special, every student can be registered to a lateral branch or double major branch.

BRIEF HISTORY

founded in 1972  by Professor İlhan Kum under the name of "Institute of Librarianship and Documentation". 



The first graduate program  under the chairmanship of Prof. Kum,  by the teaching faculty comprising professors Nilüfer Tuncer, Adil Artukoğlu, Thomas Minder, Benjamin Whitten and Phyllis Lepon Erdoğan.

The department differed from other similar programs in that students completed a year-long english language courses before they started their four-year undergraduate program.

Curriculum restructured in 1993 so as to form three divisions, namely, Librarianship, Archiving, and Documentation and Information. The department offered its undergraduate courses under the new structure between 1994 and 2000, master's and Ph.D. degrees

In 2002, with the legistlation of Higher Education Council, the Department of Librarianship was renamed as the "Department of Information and Records Management" with a new curriculum.
