Beatrice or “Tris” Beatrice is a static character, protagonist and the main character. She is sixteen and has a narrow face, wide, round eyes, and a long thin nose. In the book she is brave, courageous and not afraid in what she believes. She can be afraid, but has figured out how to overcome that fear in order to be successful. Tris first faction was Abnegation and changed to Dauntless

Christina Christina is a static character, protagonist, and is a minor character. She is tall, has dark brown skin and short black hair. She is a very nice person , but can be very strong and not to be messed with when mad. She is brave and is not afraid to fight for what she believes in. Christina first faction was Candor and is now a Dauntless

Al Al is a dynamic character because he constantly changed from being a protagonist to an antagonist, but is still a minor character. He is tall, brown hair, very strong but has no self esteem. He would strong on the outside but weak on the inside. He fell in love with Tris and when he was rejected his third time, he killed himself.

Eric Eric is one of the leaders of the Dauntless headquarters and trains the initiates in order to join the Dauntless. Eric is a minor character and is dynamic. He is 16 years old with long black hair, several piercing in his ear/lips, and has brown eyes. He is somebody that you don’t want to mess with when mad.

Tobias or “Four” Four is a minor and dynamic character. He is tall with brown hair and black eyes. He is very brave and is another leader of the Dauntless headquarters. He is a mysterious character with an anonymous past. As it turns out, Four falls in love with Tris and tells her that he is also Divergent.

Rising Action

The rising action of a story is that series of events that begin immediately after the exposition, or introduction , of the story and builds up to the climax

Beatrice starts the orientation process and is deemed inconclusive or “Divergent” and is told not to tell anyone about her results. Beatrice goes home and talks with her brother about the orientation process and he says to think about what you are suppose to choose. Beatrice and her brother go to the choosing ceremony. Beatrice decides Dauntless and her brother decides Erudite, leaving there parents in Abnegation. Beatrice jumps the train & meets Christina. Beatrice jumps off a building, lands through a crevice, and into a net. Beatrice changes her name to Tris. Tris, Will, Al, and Christina go through the first stage of training and pass. Tris finds a boys face with a halo cut on his face and has a knife in his eye in there dormitory. Visiting day occurs and Tris meets with her mom and learns that her mom was Dauntless. The group goes to a paintball field and all of the initiates have a huge paintball game. Tris and her team of small/fast people won. The second stage of initiation occurs, and there challenge is to face there own fears in a hallucination like the orientation process. After Tris’s second time in her hallucination, she was able to change the hallucination because of her abilities of being Divergent. After the hallucination is complete, Four tells Tris to never change the hallucination.

Rising Action

The rising action of a story is that series of events that begin immediately after the exposition, or introduction ,

Tris is alone and goes with the Dauntless initiates to a big zip line and zip line across buildings. Tris and all of the initiates go to the third stage, the fear landscape. This tests there fears with there the physical abilities. A few hours after Tris finishes learning about the fear landscape, she goes through Four’s fear landscape, learning his real name (Tobias) and why they call him Four, which is because he only has four fears. Tris goes through one of the instructors of the Dauntless born initiates fears and fails miserably. Tris leaves the Dauntless facilities ad goes to meet with her brother Caleb Tris is kidnapped by the Erudite and talks with there leader Jeanine, later that day when she returns to Dauntless, she is interrogated by Eric. She was able to leave because Four was able to convince him to let her go. Tris meets with Four and he says that the Erudite are planning war with the Abnegation and they are going to use the Dauntless to exceed that plan. Tris goes through her fear landscape and only has 6 fears.

Climax

A decisive moment that is of maximum intensity or is a major turning point in a plot.

The climax is when Tris finds out that she made it past initiation with Christina and Will. Tris ranked 1st, Christina ranked 6th, and Will ranked 7th. This is the climax because not the she id Dauntless she can finally get a good job in her community and will not be in danger of being factionless.

Falling Action

The part of a literary plot that occurs after the climax has been reached and the conflict has been resolved.

After the new members of Dauntless go to there rooms, everyone is brain washed into being soldiers for the Erudite-Abnegation war, people that are divergent are not brain washed, so Tobias and Tris are fine. Tobias and Tris are held captives by Jeanine, and she then sticks a needle into Tobias and he does not remember who Tris is. Tris is put in a tube that fills with water, and before she drowns, her mother rescues her. Tris and her mother run to meet the others when her mother stays and takes the attention of the dauntless soldiers and gets killed. Tris is then chased by 3 soldiers, she kills all of them, one of them being her close friend Will. The group of Tris, Marcus, Tris’s dad and Caleb all breached the Dauntless headquarters and find Peter not brain washed. The group splits up, Tris and her dad go on ahead and Caleb, Peter, and Marcus wait for them. Tris and her dad breach the head floor for the headquarter and Tris meets with Tobias after her father dies. Tris awakes Tobias from his brain wash, turns off the serum for the brain washings and takes the simulation serum. This is Man vs. Man in this book because Tris has to beat every single initiate in order to be known as Dauntless. This is a conflict because if she does not finish in the top ten of all of the initiates, then she will become factionless, when your factionless you will have no home and all of the jobs that nobody likes is only given to factionless.

This is a conflict in this book because the main character Tris needed to over come her own fears in order to go through to the next challenge. This is a conflict because if she doesn’t over come her fears, she becomes factionless.

This is a conflict because the whole community hates people that are Divergent and will kill Tris because she is Divergent. This is a conflict because if they find out that she is divergent then she will be killed and not finish the initiation process.

Resolution

The book ends with Tris, Tobias, Caleb, Peter, and Marcus board a train heading to Amity with the simulation serum in order to get it out of the hands of the Erudite leader Jeanine. After Tris and Tobias turned the brain washing off, the Dauntless and Abnegation are scattered through out the whole city.
