Galagidae

Galago crassicaudatus lestradei Schouteden, 1953 Rev.Zool.Bot.Afr., Vol. 48, p. 113 Current name: Otolemur montieri (Bartlett, 1863) Wilson and Reeder, 2005 page 127 Syntype RMCA 19908 adult male Prp: flat skin in good condition skull with M3 out, in good condition skeleton, not complete Rec: Lestrade, 1 January 1950 Loc: Rwinkavu, alt. 1500 m, Rwanda, 1.58 S – 30.34 E RMCA 19803 adult Prp: flat skin in fair condition skull and skeleton preserved in alcohol Rec: Lestrade, 1 January 1950 Loc: Rwinkavu, Rwanda Date for 19908 in register is 1 June 1950, for 19803 January 1950. Schouteden has described the subspecies in October 1953 based on 19803, 19908 and the information he got from Lestrade about four animals (three adults and a juvenile) collected 21 July 1953. The skulls and skeletons of three animals arrived 28 December 1953, a female (21921) and two juveniles (21922 and 21923). Stuffed skins of two adults (23057 and 23059) and a juvenile (23058) arrived on 7 September 1955, in the register the two adults are indicated as paratypes. Another two stuffed skins got finaly a number the 6th June 1991, an adult (91.043-M-0001) and a juvenile (91.043-M-0002), I have no indication when they arrived. For the four animals of July 1953 we have now 5 skins (three adults and two juveniles) and three skulls (one adult and two juveniles). So I can’t be sure that any of these animals match the information from Lestrade and I don’t accept them as paratypes.

Cercopithecidae

Cercopithecus ascanius cirrhorhinus Matschie, 1912 Ann.Soc.Roy.Zool. et Malac.Belge, Vol. 47, p. 70 Current name : Cercopithecus ascanius (Audebert, 1799) Wilson and Reeder, 2005 page 154 Type RMCA Prp: Rec: Loc:

347 adult male mounted specimen in bad condition Weyns, received in 1899 Tshopo, RDCongo, 0.28 N – 25.33 E

According the text the skull was present and he gives measurements but I can’t find it. Schwarz in 1928 said that 247 (C.a.pelorhinus) and 356 are in Berlin, he don’t mention a skull for 347 nor 351. In the register the locality is ‘district Stanleyville’, and all the other specimens mentioned are from the right bank of the river so the type locality is certainly not lower Lomami, Lonnberg in 1919 mention as type-locality Tshopo. Are mentioned in the description but not as paratypes, 246 adult female mounted in good condition, no skull, 248 adult male mounted in good condition, no skull, 249 juvenile flat skin in fair condition and a skull (pd4 out), 351 according the register in Berlin, should be mounted and a skull, 356 see Schwarz 1928, should be a skin but no skull, 357 juvenile mounted in good condition, no skull. So the only skull we have is 249, a juvenile. Schouteden – De zoogdieren van Belgisch Congo en van Ruanda-Urundi, 1947 ‘de Typen in onze verzameling berusten’

He doesn’t say that 3504 and 3505 are male and female type but in the register these two are indicated as type and the rest + 3516 are co-type. Lonnberg give measurements for two skulls. Lonnberg don’t mention a skull. There are doubts about the type locality, Bayer has collected in Kivu-Ruwenzori, on Mt Elgon and around the Kilimanjaro. I have a skull and skeleton for 2169 but that is a Chlorocebus pygerythrus. In Wilson and Reeder, 2005 and in Primate Taxonomy (Groves, 2001) the author is Lorenz but Einar Lonnberg is correct. They use as number 77.08-M-12 but they did mean 77.008-M-0001. In the description an allusion to the Salongo National Park is made, river and park is Salonga, and 200 km to the south.

According to ‘A checklist of African mammals’, Allen 1939 C.a.weynsi is a synonyme of C.a.zenkeri. Also Matschie compares it with C.a.zenkeri from French Congo. Weyns send us along with this one a series of 25 animals from ‘Bas Congo’. In the gazetteer I find six localities for ‘Sanga’ in ‘Bas Congo’. Two of these localities are on the right side of the River, 5.11 S – 13.42 E and 5.18 S – 12.52 (also known as Sanga Bamba). For me the type locality is Sanga (Bamba) in RDCongo (5.18 S – 12.52 E) and not the Sanga region in French Congo (now Congo Brazzaville). Matschie have written ‘Gorilla gorilla uellensis Mtsch. subsp. nov.‘ in a letter of 18 February 1905 to Coart (director of the museum at that time). He mention in that letter RMCA 100 (type), RMCA 101 (skull with M3 out and not full grown, without a mandible and black like the type), RMCA 102 (skull with M3 out in fair condition) and RMCA 103 (mandible which fits 100) and gives them all the name G.gorilla uellensis. We have two skulls from Bondo, the third one is from Mobele on the Itimbiri. I find Mobele as an affluent of the Kalamute, an affluent of the Aruwimi. In a publication (Rev.Zool.Bot.Afr., 19,2 p. 300) from 1930 Schouteden say that the third one is from Mobili, Itimbiri (Mbili) but he also mention that Le Marinel collected the skulls in 1908. In the same publication he also mentions a gorilla from Motima (2.3 N – 21 E) an affluent of the Mongala collected by Grenfell although he warns himself that most of the gorilla sights in the area are in fact chimpanzees. See also Hofreiter et al. Am.J.Phys.Anthropol. 121: 361-368 (2003) they analyse a DNA-sample of RMCA 103, their conclusion is Gorilla gorilla. De Pauw has used a name that didn’t exist. Next page is a plate with a photo of a mounted animal and a skeleton. In the letter of 18 February 1905 from Matschie to Coart (see G.g.uellensis) Matschie gives a list with determinations for several animals of our collection. The remark by Simia fsihego ituriensis subsp.nov. is ‘maybe better as Simia fsihego nahani and Simia koolokamba ituricus’. RMCA 753 is not mentioned but RMCA 286, 302, 458, 545, 688, 689 and 690 are. In 1912 he described Simia ituricus but used animals from Quex Park as type and mention RMCA 545 and 558 for this species. Also in 1912 he described Simia nahani with RMCA 688 as type and mention 689 and 690. 286 an adult, 302 and 458 two young animals are forgotten in 1912. So in the end he didn’t describe Fsihego ituriensis, nobody did. Schouteden – De zoogdieren van Belgisch Congo en van Ruanda-Urundi, 1947 ‘Type in ons museum’
