INHOUD / CONTENTS Studium Generale is onderdeel van het Studenten Service Centrum van de Universiteit Maastricht. Deze agenda is een publicatie van het Studium Generale en biedt een overzicht van het hele programma van activiteiten op het gebied van brede wetenschappelijke, maatschappelijke en culturele vorming. Het bestaat uit lezingen, debatten, collegereeksen, concerten, filmvertoningen en cabaretvoorstellingen. Deze agenda is chronologisch opgesteld.
Studium Generale is part of the Student Services Centre of Maastricht University. This agenda is a publication of Studium Generale and offers an overview of our program of activities covering a broad spectrum of scientific, social, and cultural topics of education. It consists of lectures, debates, lecture series, concerts, movies and comedy performances. This agenda follows a chronological order.

TEN GELEIDE / EDITORIAL
Altijd maar weer de vraag hoe ideeën voor lezingen en andere SG-activiteiten tot stand komen. Een pasklaar antwoord is er niet. Het is geen kunstje dat je aan kunt leren. Je moet beschikken over een lenige geest. Nieuwe verbanden durven en kunnen leggen. Bewegen kan helpen: wandelen, fietsen, treinreizen, motorrijden in de natuur. Je geregeld uitgebreid terugtrekken op het toilet. Rommel om je heen blijkt ook goed te werken. Altijd een bierviltje bij de hand hebben voor aantekeningen. Of een klein notitieblokje. Zoveel mogelijk je neus laten zien waar je het zelf niet zou verwachten. Over de schutting van je studie, onderzoek of wetenschapsterrein kijken. Luisteren zonder intussen steeds te denken aan wat je zelf nu weer eens wilt gaan zeggen. Die verdomde smartphone een paar dagen onberoerd laten. Een beetje op vakantie gaan onder werktijd. En dan volop genieten van wat er allemaal in je brein opborrelt.

It’s always the question where ideas for lectures and other SG activities come from. There’s no cut-and-dried answer. It’s not a trick you can teach anyone. You need an agile mind and the ability and daring to forge new links. Moving around can be a help: walking, cycling, train trips and driving through the countryside. And regularly retreating to the toilet for a while. Being surrounded by junk seems to work as well. Always have a coaster at hand for scribbling things down, or a small notepad. Show your face in unaccustomed places as often as possible. Look over the fence of your studies, research or academic field. Listen without always thinking of what you want to say yourself. Leave the damn Smartphone alone for a couple of days. Take a bit of a holiday during working hours. And then enjoy to the full all the things that bubble up out of your mind.

Wetenschap als esthetische ervaring Dr. Gerard Bodifée astrofysicus, journalist en schrijver, België Ma 12, 19 en 26 jan en 2 en 9 feb 19.30 tot 21.30 uur Karl Dittrichzaal, Studenten Service Centrum, Bonnefantenstraat 2 Wetenschap wordt gedreven door het verlangen naar waarheid en gestuurd door een streven naar schoonheid. Van een wetenschappelijke theorie wordt geëist dat zij niet alleen het waarnemingsgegeven correct weergeeft, maar ook dat zij voldoet aan criteria van schoonheid, zoals eenvoud, consistentie, elegantie en niet-trivialiteit. De ervaring leert dat het zoeken naar schoonheid vaak resulteert in het vinden van waarheid. Vooral de fysica kent verrassende voorbeelden. Tal van vragen komen daarbij op. Is schoonheid een intrinsiek kenmerk van waarheid? Wat is schoonheid? Bestaat er een objectieve definitie of universele appreciatie van schoonheid? Waar komt de esthetische voldoening vandaan die de wetenschap schenkt? Is de natuur zelf mooi, of leggen we alleen maar schoonheid in de theorieën waarmee we de natuurverschijnselen verklaren? Dat zijn enkele vragen die aan bod komen in deze collegereeks. Talrijke voorbeelden uit de oude en recente geschiedenis van de wetenschap ondersteunen de antwoorden die deze vragen zullen krijgen.

Holslag Professor of International Politics, Free University Brussels Mon 12 January, 8 pm Auditorium Minderbroedersberg 4-6 In tonight’s lecture, Jonathan Holslag will argue that Europe cannot afford to become homogeneous as a society. It needs cultural diversity and even friction in the great family of European nations to innovate, to create and to excel. But when it comes to security and core values, the turbulent international order imposes on Europe a strong necessity to cooperate. Holslag will make clear that the future of European unity should therefore be less technocratic and more strategic.

Disciplines like physics and psychology originated from philosophy. For a long time, philosophers were the only scientists trying to understand reality, whether physical or social. But philosophy is more than that, because it explores important issues that go beyond scientific research, actively engaging with the most important issues of our lives. What does it all mean? Can we decipher what is good and evil? Does it make sense to distinguish mind and body? What does a social and international order look like in which basic freedoms can be fully realised? Is art important for our happiness? These questions correspond to five interrelated subdisciplines of philosophy: philosophy of language, ethics, philosophy of the mind, political philosophy and philosophy of art. This series addresses these disciplines and aims to appreciate Western philosophy through exploring its history, the main issues and the major philosophers. The series is a general introduction and shows that the mother of all sciences can be fascinating, interesting and broadminded.

Andreas Vesalius en het begin van de moderne wetenschap
Ebola en MERS, opduikende infectieziekten in een wereld zonder grenzen
Prof. dr. P. Broos em. hoogleraar chirurgie, KU Leuven Wo 14 januari, 20.00 uur Aula Minderbroedersberg 4-6 Vesalius (1513 - 1564) was arts en anatoom en één van de grondleggers van de anatomie. Hij werd opgeleid in Leuven en Parijs en bestudeerde de geneeskunde volgens de destijds gangbare leer van Galenus. Langzaam maar zeker besefte hij dat werkelijke waarnemingen belangrijker zijn dan wat er in de boeken te vinden is. Deze visie was behoorlijk vernieuwend. In 1537 werd hij in Padua benoemd tot professor anatomie en chirurgie. In deze positie kon hij anatomisch onderzoek doen aan de lichamen van ter dood veroordeelden. In 1543 bracht hij De Humani Corporis Fabrica uit, een wereldberoemd meesterwerk met gedetailleerde tekeningen van Italiaanse kunstenaars.
Prof. dr. R. Coutinho hoogleraar epidemiologie en preventie van infectieziekten, Un. Utrecht Do 15 januari 2015, 20.00 uur Aula Minderbroedersberg 4-6 Coutinho (auteur van De geplaagde mens) vertelt vanavond over de strijd die de mens voert tegen infectieziekten. De hele internationale gemeenschap raakte in de ban van de uitbraak van Ebola. De enorme omvang van die uitbraak in West-Afrika heeft iedereen verrast. Toen MERS voor het eerst werd beschreven in 2012, was is er vanwege de verwantschap met SARS juist grote bezorgdheid over een wereldwijde uitbraak maar die uitbraak is uitgebleven. Welke factoren zijn bepalend. Zijn we in staat om te voorspellen met welke nieuwe uitdagingen we in de toekomst te maken zullen krijgen?

In Seville, he met the dancer Irene Alvarez, who trained in Seville and Jerez. Alvarez has a very spontaneous and pure style, and as a true Sevillian has mastered all the finer points of the Sevillanas. Along with her, singer Carmen Fernandez and guitarist Alexander Gavilán, Federico Ordoñez created DOS - an imaginative Flamenco performance, which revolves around the themes of sensuality, seduction, love and conflict. The dance couple, who are perfectly in tune with one another, combine power and technique with elegance and femininity.

Kosmologische kwesties
een economische, ecologische en sociale kijk op duurzaam bouwen
Mw. dr. ir. G. Verbeeck docent kunst en architectuur, Un. Hasselt Wo 28 januari, 20.00 uur Karl Dittrichzaal, Studenten Service Centrum, Bonnefantenstraat 2 Verbeeck gaat in op wat er nu en in de toekomst van onze woningen op het gebied van duurzaamheid wordt verwacht. Ze bekijkt de technische en de economische mogelijkheden voor energiebesparing en laat zien hoe je de belangrijkste ingrepen het beste kunt bepalen en welke economische en sociale barrières er zijn. Ze gaat verder in op de beperkte tijd dat een huis als woning gebruikt kan worden, maar ook op de duurzaamheid van het gebouw over zijn hele levenscyclus. Afsluitend zet ze de stap van energiegebruik in één woning naar dat van het totale woningenpark. Het energiezuiniger maken daarvan is een werk van zeer lange adem, iets wat bij het schrijven van klimaatplannen en het uitstippelen van toekomstscenario’s vaak over het hoofd wordt gezien.

Govert Schilling wetenschapsjournalist en -publicist op het gebied van de sterrenkunde Do 29 jan, 5 en 26 feb en 5 mrt - 19.30 uur tot 21.30 uur Aula Minderbroedersberg 4-6 Govert Schilling is wetenschapsjournalist en publicist. Hij schrijft over sterrenkunde en ruimteonderzoek voor kranten en tijdschriften in binnen- en buitenland. Hij publiceerde vele tientallen boeken over uiteenlopende sterrenkundige onderwerpen, en is regelmatig te gast in radio- en tv-programma’s om toelichting te geven op sterrenkundige ontdekkingen. In 2002 werd zijn werk op het gebied van de popularisering van kennis en wetenschap beloond met de Eureka!oeuvreprijs van de Stichting Weten en de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO).

Schilling behandelt op de eerste avond de geschiedenis van de kosmologie, de ontdekking van de uitdijing van het heelal en de oorsprong van de oerknaltheorie. Ook beschrijft hij de elementaire deeltjes waaruit de kosmos is opgebouwd en de kosmische achtergrondstraling die een soort ‘echo’ van de oerknal vormt. Op de tweede avond staan knagende vragen centraal zoals ‘Waar vond de oerknal plaats?’, ‘Is het heelal eindig of oneindig?’, ‘Wat is gekromde ruimte?’ en ‘Wat was er vóór de oerknal?’. Daarnaast worden begrippen als uitdijende ruimte en roodverschuiving behandeld. Precisiemetingen aan sterrenstelsels, clusters en supernova’s hebben aanleiding gegeven tot ingrijpende aanpassingen van het klassieke oerknalmodel. Op de derde avond komen begrippen als inflatie, donkere materie en donkere energie aan bod, en zal blijken dat 95% van de inhoud van het heelal een raadsel is. Op de laatste avond staat Schilling stil bij de vraag of het heelal ook anders had kunnen zijn, en waarom het dan op maat gesneden lijkt voor het ontstaan van leven. Daarnaast behandelt hij het intrigerende idee dat ons heelal misschien deel uitmaakt van een allesomvattend Multiversum van parallelle heelallen.

In tonight’s lecture, Muff and Dyllick will show what fundamental changes are needed in research, education and the societal engagement of universities, in the light of challenges for sustainable development. They will indicate what steps need to be taken in educating responsible leaders prepared to address global issues. Dyllick and Muff headed a core group that helped setting up the “50+20 Agenda: Management Education for the World”, which was launched during the Rio+20 United Nations Conference.

Much of the debate about the mindset of jihadists in the Middle East has been overshadowed by those who join the Islamic State, resulting in the characterization of all participants in the conflict as nihilistic barbarians. This is certainly true of some of them – but not all. Maher will paint a more subtle and granular picture of just who is fighting in Syria and Iraq, and why they are fighting. Which Islamic political movements are playing a role? Why is there so much violence? Which groups are fighting? Who are these people? What are they doing out there? And, more importantly, what motivated them to go? Shiraz Maher has interviewed members of Jabhat al-Nusra, Ahrar al-Sham, and the Free Syrian Army on the Syrian/Turkish border.

Zij zien de verworvenheden van ‘de eeuw van de rede’ bedreigd door de Islam. De ironie wil dat het een lange tijd zo was dat linkse intellectuelen en politici Verlichtingsidealen als vrijheid, gelijkheid en broederschap moesten verdedigen tegen rechts. Waar links de autoriteit van kerk en staat kritiseerde en naar emancipatie streefde, wilde rechts het ancien régime handhaven. De actualiteit van de Verlichting is een goede reden om
het leven en werk van juist die filosofen onder de aandacht te brengen die er zo’n grote stempel op hebben gedrukt. One of the basic principles of economics is that you don’t talk about ethics. However, can economics, or banking, really be value-free? Is it just a technical discipline? Is interest rate, one of the core ideas of banking, an ethical issue? Do bankers need to learn not only about money but also about morality? Tonight, Tomáš Sedláček and Joris Luyendijk will discuss the need to restore some spirit to the efficiently working body of the economy.

Tomáš Sedláček (1977) worked as an economic advisor to President Václav Havel and to the Minister of Finance. He is a chief macroeconomic strategist at ČSOB Banking Group. His book Economics of Good and Evil became an international bestseller and was awarded the Deutscher Wirtschaftsbuchpreis in 2012. Joris Luyendijk (1971) is an anthropologist and journalist. Since 2011 Luyendijk works for The Guardian. His blogs provide an anthropological perspective on the ways of the financial world. His book Het zijn net mensen (2006, It’s as if they are human) is a report of his experiences as a news correspondent in the Middle East. This lecture is a cooperation between the Maastricht University School of Business and Economics, Studium Generale and SCOPE | Economics. It is part of the “Celebrating 30 Years of Inspiration” programme, with which the SBE is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

However, not many of us are aware that this evolutionary history can be directly seen in our bodies and behaviours. This lecture series explores our position in the tree of life and how we can understand our human anatomy and behaviour from this perspective. It will also look at how humans spread around the world and how
this was facilitated by newly evolved adaptations. Finally, the impact of evolution on our daily lives will be investigated and how evolutionary thinking can help to revolutionise medicine.
