Psychiatric specialties National Board of Health and Welfare 2008

• Psychiatry (basic) – Forensic psychiatry (branch)

• Child and adolescent psychiatry (basic)

• i.e. only way into forensic psychiatry is via (general) psychiatry – Already a specialist in psychiatry – Joint training scheme between psychiatry and forensic psychiatry

Psychiatrists in Sweden • Approximate number of registered specialists: – 3,000 psychiatrists • 100 forensic psychiatrists

– 600 child and adolescent psychiatrists

– 9,000 general practitioners – In total 50,000 licensed medical practitioners

• Overall aims – Medical skills – Communication skills – Scientific skills – Leadership skills

• Recommendations – = how aims should be achieved e.g. • Clinical work, auscultation • training courses, seminars, projects

New curriculum in Forensic Psychiatry Integration of forensic psychiatric care, assessment (court reports), and work in the correctional services

The quality assurance framework • Contracts and documentation • Dean of specialist training (one at RMV and others in forensic psychiatric care clinics) • Certified clinical supervisors who are specialists in forensic psychiatry • Scientific supervisors (with PhDs) • Inspections carried out

Our curriculum • Medical skills (assuming all criteria for general psychiatry already met) – Clinical work in forensic psychiatric care (1yr) – Court assessments carried out at RMV (~20 long & 25 short cases) – Courses & seminars (organised by RMV) in e.g.; – Criminology – Liaison work- psychiatry, prison and social services – Risk assessment – Relevant laws and regulations – Ethics and a professional approach to MDOs

• Communication and leadership skills – Through courses, tutorials, teaching & clinical work

• Medical science and audit – a scientific report (>10wks) – An audit project – Course in basic public health

Work in progress • New guidelines and curriculum already apply • If medical degree prior to 2006, have until 2013 to complete specialist training according to the old curriculum • Quality assurance framework, seminars, and courses currently being designed at RMV in co-operation with SRPF
