Sindsdien zit hij in eenzame opsluiting. Ghazali zit al bijna een jaar opgesloten in een kleine cel. Het enige moment dat hij zijn cel mag verlaten is om te douchen. Bezoek mag niet vaker dan eens per veertig dagen komen. Sinds begin maart is hij in hongerstaking uit protest tegen zijn gevangenisomstandigheden. Zijn langdurige eenzame opsluiting komt neer op marteling. Ghazali verkeert in slechte gezondheid, maar de autoriteiten weigeren hem naar het ziekenhuis te brengen. Ghazali zou lid zijn van de verboden politieke oppositiebeweging de Moslimbroederschap. De autoriteiten zien de beweging als een terroristische organisatie en pakten al honderden aanhangers op. Ghazali vecht zijn veroordeling aan in hoger beroep. Als het beroep wordt afgewezen kan hij elk moment worden geëxecuteerd.
Schrijf alsjeblieft vóór 1 juni 2017 naar de autoriteiten in Egypte. Roep hen op Ahmed Amin Ghazali Amin goed te behandelen en een eerlijk proces te geven.

I wish to express my concern about Ahmed Amin Ghazali Amin who was sentenced to death by a Military Court on 29th May 2016, along with seven other men in Case 174 of 2015. Ahmed Amin Ghazali Amin has since been held in solitary confinement in al-Aqrab prison in Cairo. Ahmed Amin Ghazali Amin’s appeal hearing is due to be set. I call on you to retry all those convicted in the case before an ordinary, civilian court, without recourse to the death penalty, and in proceedings that respect international fair trial standards and exclude “confessions” and other evidence obtained through torture and other ill-treatment.
I further call on you to end the solitary confinement of Ahmed Amin Ghazali Amin and ensure that Ahmed Amin Ghazali Amin is held in humane conditions and protected from torture and other ill-treatment, and granted access to adequate medical care.
