U - Urbanization Urbanization is the growth and development of cities The steam engine allowed factories to move to the cities away from water sources The rapid growth of cities leads to pitiful living conditions Negative effects of urbanization include: increase garbage, bad sanitation, and overpopulation

S - Standard of Living Increases Standard of Living refers to how much you can buy Better food production and lowered costs of good made them more available As workers’ rights Increased wages and led to an increase in purchasing power of the working family

T - Transportation Improved James Watt produced the steam engine that was used to turn wheels Wheels were used to power heavy machines in the factories The same steam engine was applied to locomotives (George Stephenson) and the steam engine was applied to boats as well (Robert Fulton – Clermont)

R – Rise of Pollution Air and water pollution increased as waste from the textile industry entered the environments Overpopulation of cities led to poor living conditions and sanitation in industrial cities

Y – You Need More Metal Iron and coal was burned together to create a pure metal called Steel Steel was stronger and lighter than iron and cost less to transport As metals became more available; industry grew even faster than before
