Identify the contributions made by these historic figures: James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, and Mary Musgrove (founding of Georgia); Sequoyah (development of a Cherokee alphabet); Jackie Robinson (sports); Martin Luther King, Jr. (civil rights); Jimmy Carter (leadership and human rights). Limited or Minimum Progress toward achievement of standard (1)

Student is able to identify the contributions made by some of the historical figures taught during this grading period.

Consistently and independently achieves the standard (3)

Student consistently and independently identifies the contributions made by all of the historical figures taught during this grading period.

Assessment Activities Have students complete a flip book about the life and contributions of each historic figure. Create a Bio Cube to summarize each historic figure. Complete a Biography Poem about each historic figure. See attached template. Keep an anchor chart to summarize the contributions, everyday life, Georgia location, travel, impact of travel, and citizenship traits of each historic figure. (Click for the anchor chart and an example.) Instructional Notes:

Students should know:  that many people do things that improve life for other people. During the 2nd grading period: the contributions made by James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, Mary Musgrove, and Sequoyah. During the 3rd grading period: the contributions made by Jackie Robinson and Martin Luther King, Jr. During the 4th grading period: the contributions made by Jimmy Carter.
