History • The region of Palestine is an area that has been captured over and over by different groups • 634: Conquered by Islamic Empire • 878: Ruled from Egypt • 970: Invaded by Fatimids • 1073: Captured by the Seliug Empire • 1098: Recaptured by Fatimids • 1099: Captured by Crusaders • 1187: Captured by Ayyubids • 1516: Captured by the Ottoman Empire

1922: After WWI, Great Britain is awarded mandate to govern the region 1947: Great Britain splits area between Jews and Palestinians

1948: Palestinian Exodus and Arab-Israeli War

Government • The political status of the Palestinian territories is one of the most violently disputed aspects of the Arab-Israeli Conflict • Two rival factions administer the territories – Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Fatah in the West Bank

Economy • Economic conditions deteriorated in the 1990s due to corruption and Israeli closure policies – Up until the 1990s, about 150,000 Palestinians worked in construction in Israel

• After 2007, the economy has improved somewhat

National Issues • The Palestinian Territories have been in constant conflict with Israel due in part to increasing Israeli settlements in the West Bank region, Palestinian attacks in Israel, and the building of the wall between Israel and the West Bank • Both Fatah and Hamas Palestinian Authority carry out arbitrary detentions, torture, and executions after unfair trials
