Voorwoord 

 

  Gedurende  vier  dagen  zal  deze  tentoonstelling  de  raakvlakken  tussen  Architectuur,  Stedenbouw,  Ruimtelijke  Planning,  Fotografie  en  Beeldende  Kunst  verkennen.  ARTchitect  Johan  van  Geluwe,  Fotograaf  Dieter  Van  Caneghem  en  Architect  –  Stedenbouwkundige  Andreas  De  Boeck,  gaan  onderling en met het publiek in dialoog.   

topografie  van  diverse  visies  op  stedelijkheid  en  architectuur.   Met de  Kircherberg  reeks  toont Dieter  zijn  blik  op  de  ‘stille  aanwezigheid’  van  ‘de  verloren  en  gevonden  ruimtes’.  Zijn  foto’s  zijn,  zoals  ik  reeds  eerder  stelde  (zie  artikel  Vol  van  Vlaanderen),  uitnodigingen om stil te staan bij de ontmoetingen  met  deze  niet  geplande  of  tussen  de  plooien  van  de  geplande  ontwikkelde  gebieden.  Plekken  waar  objecten, dingen steeds meer dingen, eindeloos en  ongecontroleerd woekeren.   Dieter Van Caneghem en Andreas De Boeck waren  met  deze  samenwerking  niet  aan  hun  proefstuk  toe.  Reeds  eerder  werkten  ze  regelmatig  samen  voor installaties en fotoprojecten.  

  2014 – Making of Kirchberg reeks – Dieter Van Canegem 

De  foto’s  van  Dieter  Van  Caneghem  getuigen  van  zijn  interesse  en  zoektocht  naar  urbane  en  peri‐ urbane  structuren.  Hij  legt  de  stedelijke  context  vast  en  maakt  zo  de  visuele  taal  van  de  architectuur  en  stedenbouw  zichtbaar.  Met  titels  als,  ‘Transformatie’,  ‘Wachtgevel’,  ‘Dorp’  en  ‘Verloren  ruimte’  toont  hij  ons  facetten  van  het  dynamische hedendaagse stedelijke landschap in al  zijn (on)volmaaktheid.   In  zijn  portret  van  het  Kirchberg  Plateau  te  Luxemburg  capteert  hij  enerzijds,  wat  hijzelf  het  externe  contrast  noemt,  de  relatie  tussen  dit  plateau,  het  omliggende  landschap  en  de  stad  Luxemburg  en  anderzijds,  wat  hijzelf  het  interne  contrast noemt, een plateau bestaande uit een

In Andreas De Boeck zijn lectuur van het Kirchberg  Plateau  staat  de  wisselwerking  tussen  schetsen  met  annotaties,  die  hij  in  zijn  ‘carnets  de  voyage’  maakt,  en  de  analyse  van  historische  plan  documenten  centraal.  Dit  resulteert  in  een  inzicht  in  de  ontwikkeling  van  het  plateau  doorheen  de  tijd  met  zijn  respectievelijke,  beelden  en  denkbeelden.  Zijn  onderzoek  toont  ons  hoe  het  westelijke  deel,  met  de  Europese  instellingen  onderhevig  is  aan  een  andere  dynamiek  dan  het  oostelijke deel.    

 

 

 

 

Waar  Dieter  Van  Canegem  focust  op  architectuur  en  de  niet  geplande  of  tussen  de  plooien  van  de  geplande  ontwikkelde  gebieden,  zal  Andreas  De  Boeck  net  focussen  op  deze  planning  strategieën.  Hij  verdiept  zich  in  hoe  de  stad/stedelijkheid  kan  worden  geadresseerd  vanuit  de  architectuur  om  het  Kirchberg  Plateau  zowel  representatief  te  maken als een Europese hoofdstad en tevens in te  gaan  op  de  wens  om  dit  verrommelde  landschap  van kakafonische nevenschikking te verdichten.

Johan  van  Geluwe  presenteert  zijn  Europese  vlag  en  het  Europaweg  3  project  uit  1975  met  de  titel  E3 YOUR ART‐HIGHWAY.   Of het ontwerp van Andreas De Boeck een nieuwe  situtopie  is  voor  Europa  en  of  de  E3  YOUR  ART‐ HIGHWAY  een  onderdeel  vormt  van  Andreas  zijn  Europees  infrastructuur  netwerk  zal  u  kunnen  aanschouwen  tussen  de  foto’s  van  Dieter  Van  Caneghem  en  onder  de  Europese  vlag  van  Johan  van Geluwe.     Karel Wuytack

FOTOGRAAF  Dieter  Van  Caneghem  (°1990)  studeerde Fotografie aan het Sint‐Lukas te Brussel.  Binnen  het  fotografielandschap  focust  hij  zich  op  architectuur, urbane en pri‐urbane landschappen .  Fundamenteel  voor  zijn  benadering  is  wat  hij  de  topografie  van  de  ‘verloten  ruimte’  en  ‘de  stille  aanwezigheid’ noemt.  Eerder was zijn werk te zien in Recyclart, de  Sint‐ Lukasgalerie  (Brussel),  het  Foto  Festival  (Knokke‐ Heist) en ITHAKA 22 (Leuven).

ARCHITECT EN STEDENBOUWKUNDIGE Andreas De  Boeck  (°1990)  ontwikkelde  in  het  kader  van  zijn  masterproef  in  de  stedenbouw  en  de  ruimtelijke  planning, die hij Magna Cum Laude behaalde, een  reflectie  vanuit  de  theorieën  van  DOGMA  en  Alexander  D’Hooghe  om  de  stad/stedelijkheid  te  adresseren vanuit architectuur.  

KIRCHBERG  A FORM OF  EUROPE   

Brussel  als  casus  leek  een  evidente  keuze  aangezien  DOGMA  en  Alexander  D’Hooghe  respectievelijk  met  het  project  ‘Brussel:  A  Manifesto  Towards  the  Capital  of  Europe’  (2006)  en ‘A Vision for Brussels, Capital of Europe’ (2004)  hun ideeën er ontwerpmatig testen. Tevens is het  de stad waar Leon Krier en Maurice Culot reeds in  1980  hun  ‘Contreprojects’  maakten  in  het  verlengde  van  Leon  Krier  zijn  ‘Project  for  the  reconstruction  of  Luxemburg’  (1978)  en  ‘Luxemburg, capital of Europe ’ (1979).   

   

Er  werd  echter  gekozen  voor  de  site  van  het  plateau van Kichberg te Luxemburg. Na samen met  de fotograaf Dieter Van Caneghem een lectuur van  Le  Plateau  du  Kirchberg  te  hebben  gemaakt  test  Andreas  De  Boeck    zijn  theoretische  inzichten  ontwerpmatig  op  het  Kirchberg  plateau  en  ontwikkelt  zo  een  mogelijk  antwoord  op  de  bekommernis  van  de  Europese  commissie  wat  betreft hun representativiteit en het verlangen van  het  fonds  van  Kirchberg  om  dit  gebied  te  verdichten.

      2014 – Europese vlag ‐ Johan Van Geluwe   

  ARTchitect  en  curator  van  het  Museum  of  Museums  (M.O.M.)  Johan  van  Geluwe  (°1929)  presenteert  voor  deze  tentoonstelling  naast  zijn  EUROPESE VLAG het Europaweg 3 project uit 1975  met  de  titel  E3  YOUR  ART‐HIGHWAY.  Het  project  ontstond vanuit de uitnodiging door Pontus Hultén  voor  de  tentoonstelling  ‘Kultur‐magasinet  Vargen’  in  het  Moderna  Museet  in  Stockholm.  De  toenmalige  E3  verbond  LISSABON  –  WAREGEM  –  STOCKHOLM.  In  zijn  oeuvre  catalogus  beschrijft  Bart  De  Baere  hoe  dit  werk  Waregem,  waar  Van  Geluwe  woont,  met  Lissabon,  Stockholm  en  alles  wat er tussen ligt verbindt en zo de unieke positie       

  die  Johan  van  Geluwe  inneemt  illustreert;  van  ongegeneerd  lokaal  en  even  vanzelfsprekend  internationaal.  Europa  krijgt  een  bijzondere  plaats  in  het  werk  van  Johan  van  Geluwe,  zo  maakt  hij  voor  het  Belgische  voorzitterschap  van  Europa,  in  opdracht  van  de  Vlaamse  gemeenschap,  ‘Een   Vlaams  tafellaken  voor  Europa’  met  de  tekst  A  JUNK  OF  ART  IS  A  JOY  FOR  NEVER  en  neemt  deel  aan  de  tentoonstelling  ‘CABINET  OF  CURIOSITIES  FROM  BELGIUM  FOR  EUROPE’  te  Brussel.  In  2013  nodigt Filip Luyckx hem uit voor de tentoonstelling  ‘CULTURAL  FREEDOM  IN  EUROPE’  te  Brussel  en  presenteert  hij  op  de  reizende  tentoonstelling  ‘UNITED  STATES  OF  EUROPE’  zijn  project  ‘SITUTOPIEËN  VOOR  EUROPA’  waarbij  hij  een  selectie  van  miniatuurversies  van  Europese  monumenten  met  een  iconische  status  uit  de  collectie van het M.O.M. selecteert.

Deze  tentoonstelling  is  opgebouwd  rond  het  afstudeerproject  ‘KIRCHBEG  A  FORM  OF  EUROPE’  van  de  laureaat  2013‐2014  van  de  opleiding  in  de  stedenbouw  en  de  ruimtelijke  planning,  Faculteit  Architectuur,  KU  Leuven,  campus  Sint‐Lucas  Gent.   Andreas  De  Boeck  ontwikkelde  binnen  de  onderzoeksthemagroep  reflective  theory  dit  project  samen  met  zijn  promotor  Karel  Wuytack,  co‐promotor  Rob  Ragoen  en  mentor  Martino  Tattara. 

                           

De  tentoonstelling/debat  vormt  de  derde  in  een  reeks  die  binnen  deze  onderzoeksthemagroep  wordt  ontwikkeld.  Na  ‘CASABLANCA  –  CASABLANCA’  van  16‐05‐2013  tot  22‐06‐2013  en  ‘THE IMPORTANCE OF ART’ van 24‐06‐2013 tot 15‐ 10‐2013  die  beiden  doorgingen  in  de  Sint‐ Lucasbibliotheek  te  Gent  is  voor  ‘KIRCHBERG  A  FORM  OF  EUROPE’  gekozen  voor  een  locatie  in  Brussel  die  Annemie  Demeulemeester  ter  beschikking stelde.  

               

Voor  de  tentoonstelling/debat  ‘THE  IMPORTANCE  OF  ART’  was  ARTchitect  Johan  van  Geluwe  reeds  actief  betrokken  en  fotograaf  Dieter  Van  Caneghem  ontwikkelde  reeds  enkele  projecten  in  opdracht van de onderzoeksthemagroep reflective  theory. Binnen het project ‘KIRCHBERG A FORM OF  EUROPE’  vormt  de  fotoreeks  van  Dieter  Van  Caneghem  een  fundamenteel  onderdeel  binnen  Andreas  De  Boeck  zijn  lectuur  van  en  reflectie  op  Kirchberg.  ARTchitect  Johan  van  Geluwe  gaat,  via  de presentatie van eigen werk, in dialoog met deze  jonge generatie over representatie, verstedelijking  en Europese netwerken.

Preface 

 

  During the course of four days, this exhibition will  explore  the  intersections  between  Architecture,  Urbanism,  Sparial  Planning,  Photography  and  the  Visual  Arts.  ARTchitect  Johan  Van  Geluwe,  Photographer Dieter Van Caneghem and Architect‐ Urbanist  Andreas  will  engage  in  a  dialogue  which  each other, and their audience. 

Features  very  diverse  visions  on  urbanism  and  architecture.  With  the  Kirchberg  photo‐set,  Dieter  gives  us  his  vision  on  the  'quiet  presence'  of  'lost  and  rediscovered  spaces'.  His  photos  are,  as  I  wrote  before  in  the  article  ‘Vol  van  Vlaanderen’,  invitations  to  ponder  on  sites  that  came  about  unplanned  or  without  much  care  for  coherence.  Places where an ever increasing number of objects  populate a landscape.  This  wasn't  the  first  collaboration  of  Dieter  Van  Caneghem  and  Andreas  De  Boeck.  They  had  worked together on installations and projects on a  regular basis.

Dieter  Van  Caneghem's  photos  pay  testament  to  his  ongoing  search  for  urban  and  peri‐urban  structures. He captures an urban context and thus  exposes  the  visual  language  of  architecture  and  urbanism.  With  titles  as  'Transformation',  'Temporary  Façade',  'Village'  and  'Lost  Space',  he  shows  us  the  many  facets  of  the  contemporary  urban landscape in all its (im)perfection.  In his portrait of the Kirchberg Plateau he captures  both,  what  he  calls,  the  external  and  internal  contrast.  By  'external  contrast',  he  means  the  relationship between this plateau, the surrounding  landscape  and  the  city  of  Luxembourg.  'Internal  contrast' refers to the fact that the plateau

In  Andreas  De  Boeck's  text  on  the  Kirchberg  Plateau,  the  interplay  between  annotated  sketches, which he made in his 'carnets de voyage',  and  the  analysis  of  historical  plan  documents  is  crucial  and  results  in  a  remarkable  look  on  the  development  of  the  plateau  through  time.  His  research  shows  us  how  the  western  part  of  the  plateau,  housing  several  European  Institutions,  is  subjected  to  a  wholly  different  dynamic  than  the  eastern part of the plateau. 

 

 

  Where  Dieter  Van  Caneghem  focuses  on  the  unplanned and unintended, Andreas De Boeck will  play  his  counterpart  and  focus  on  the  strategies  that were concocted. He takes an in‐depth look at  how  the  city,  and  urbanism  in  general,  can  be  addressed  by  using  architecture.  In  this  specific  case:  to  make  the    Kirchberg  Plateau  both  believable  as  European  capital  and  to  solve  the  problem  of  an  incoherent  and  cacophonic  landscape.

PHOTOGRAPHER  Dieter  Van  Caneghem  (°1990)  studied  photography  at  Sint‐Lukas  (Brussels).  Within  the  photography‐landscape  he  focuses  on  architecture,  urban  and  peri‐urban  landscapes.  Crucial  to  his  approach  is  what  he  calls  the  'topography of lost space and silent presence'.  His work was previously displayed at Recyclart, the  Sint‐Lukasgalery  (Brussels),  the  Foto  Festival  (Knokke‐Heist) andITHAKA 22 (Leuven).

ARCHITECT  AND  URBANIST  Andreas  De  Boeck  (°1990)  developed  for  his  thesis  in  urbanism  and  spatial  planning,  which  he  completed  Magna  Cum  Laude, a reflection on the theories of DOGMA and  Alexander  d'Hooge  to  address  the  subject  of  city/urbanism from an architectural standpoint. 

 

KIRCHBERG  A FORM OF  EUROPE   

Brussels  seemed  the  logical  choice  as  case  since  both DOGMA (‘Brussel: A Manifesto Towards the Capital of Europe’ (2006))   and  Alexander  D'Hooghe  (‘A Vision for Brussels, Capital of Europe’ (2004)) used the city as a schematic testing ground for their ideas. Even more so, Brussels is also the city where Leon Krier and Maurice Culot made their 'Contreprojects' in 1980 as a continuation of Krier's ‘Project for the reconstruction of Luxembourg’ (1978) and ‘Luxemburg, capital of Europe ’ (1979).

   

Despite all of this, the plateau of Kirchberg was selected for this project after Andreas attended a lecture about the Plateau of Kirchberg, together with photographer Dieter Van Caneghem. Andreas tested his theoretical insights in a schematic manner to try and answer the questions and concerns of the European Commission regarding both the representativeness of the plateau for their organization, and the desire of the Kirchberg foundation to densify the area.

      2014 – European flag ‐ Johan van Geluwe 

ARTchitect  and  curator  of  the  Museum  of  Museums (M.O.M.) Johan van Geluwe (°1929) will  be  presenting  both  his  EUROPEAN  FLAG  and  the  EUROPAWEG  3  project  from  1975  for  this  exhibition.  The  project  came  into  being  following  an  invitation  from  Pontus  Hultén  to  participate  in  the  'Kultur‐magasinet  Vargen'  exhibition  in  the  Moderna Museet in Stockholm. In that time, the E3  connected  LISBON  ‐  WAREGEM  ‐  STOCKHOLM.  In  his oeuvre catalogue, Bart De Baere describes how  this  work  connects  Waregem,  where  Van  Geluwe  lives,  with  Lisbon,  Stockholm  and  everything  in  between, and illustrates how this results in a        

  unique position for van Geluwe: from unabashedly  unabashedly  local  to  effortlessly  international.  Europe  holds  a  special  place  in  the  work  of  Johan  Van  Geluwe.  In  commission  from  the  Flemish  Community,  celebrating  the  Belgian  presidency  of  Europe,  he  made  'A  Flemish  tapestry  for  Europe'.  He also participated in the exhibition 'CABINET OF  CURIOSITIES  FROM  BELGIUM  FOR  EUROPE'.  IN  2013,  Filip  Luyckx  invited  him  for  the  exhibition  'CULTURAL  FREEDOM  IN  EUROPE'.  Also,  he  presented  a  traveling  exhibition  called  'UNITED  STATES  OF  EUROPE',  showcasing  a  selection  of  miniature  versions  of  European  Monuments  with  iconic status from the collection of the M.O.M.

This  exposition  centers  around  the  graduation  project  'KIRCHBERG  A  FORM  OF  EUROPE'  of  the  2013‐2014  laureate  of  the  urbanism  and  spatial  planning  program,  Faculty  of  Architecture,  KU  Leuven,  campus  Sint‐Lucas  Ghent.  Within  the  'Reflective  Theory'    research‐group,  Andreas  De  Boeck  developed  this  project  together  with  his  promotor Karel Wuytack, co‐promotor Rob Ragoen  and mentor Martino Tattara.  This  exhibition/debate  will  be  the  third  in  an  ongoing  series  of  exhibitions  organized  by  this  research  group.  After  'CASABLANCA  ‐  CASABLANCA'  (16‐05‐2013  to  22‐06‐2013)  and  'THE  IMPRTANCE  OF  ART'  (24‐06‐2013  to  15‐10‐ 2013), that were both held in the Sint‐Lucas library  in Ghent, 'KIRCHBERG A FROM OF EUROPE' will be  organized in Brussels, on a location that was made  available by Annemie Demeulemeester. 

               

Before  the  exhibition/debate  'THE  IMPRTANCE  OF  ART',  ARTchitect  Johan  van  Geluwe  was  already  actively  involved  with,  and  photographer  Dieter  Van  Caneghem  already  made  some  work  for,  the  research  theme  group  'Reflective  Theory'.  Within  the  project  'KIRCHBERG  A  FORM  OF  EUROPE',  Dieter  Van  Caneghem's  set  of  photos  forms  a  fundamental  part  of  Andreas  De  Boeck's  reading  and  reflection  on  Kirchberg.  Through  the  presentation  of  his  own  work,  ARTchitect  Johan  van  Geluwe  strikes  a  dialogue  regarding  repressentation,  urbanization  and  European  networks  with  this  coming  generation  of  young  professionals.
