Objectives: Students will study elements of plot, characterization, point of view, setting, and theme in a short story. Sit in pods with like numbers. 6 groups. Vocab 3 quiz will be Monday. Love your words a little every day for best results. WTJ Checkpoint #3 starts Thursday. Includes entries WTJ 13-21.

Misc. Business • Form 6 groups/pairs if not done already. • You will need to have your student ID on you next Monday. We will go to the library to check out the next book we need for next week.

Update on college essays: The deadlines have been pushed back one week: An online peer review will be available for you to participate in beginning Oct. 21st. To participate, you will submit your essay to www.turnitin.com by Oct. 20 at 11:30 p.m. You must get online and register/enroll in www.turnitin.com. Use your real name and your k12 school issued e-mail address! Only I will see who submitted a paper and who wrote the reviews as long as you do not use your name in your essay or have it on the essay "paper." Poll + PWB • Go to Edmodo and take the poll there about college essays. • Hand in your essay for The Poisonwood Bible to the front table if you are done with your reflection and your revision work (if required or optional). • Fire up your work with “Miss Brill” for today. WTJ #19.

For Wednesday • WTJ #19, Part III, "Miss Brill" - due tomorrow. No late work as we will use these in class. • Write at least two hearty paragraphs analyzing how Mansfield characterizes Miss Brill. • Remember - Expose, Excerpt, Explain. • Use your topic sentence as a mini-thesis to set up your analysis of how the author characterizes Miss Brill.

• Then show how you know by using textual references and explaining them to support your topic sentence.

All PWB essays should be handed back in by now. Put them on the front table.



WTJ check point #3 starts Friday. • Should have entries WTJ 13-21 all on a single document in your AP Lit folder named WTJ PWB2. (#21 is today’s assignment for Thursday.) • Make sure you have shared with me so that I can “edit.” • Make sure ALL entries are CLEARLY labeled and in order by number. If I have to figure out the entry due to poor or missing labeling, you will lose points.

More Stuff: IR Unit • Go to the main page of my website in the next couple of days and complete the form: Form for titles chosen for independent reading unit. • Goodreads.com is a good resource for description of books. Beware reading reviews though – tend ot have plot spoilers. • Clarification of groups and book choice options: At least two people from the same class period must read the same book. As many people as want to can read the same book, but papers will be in pairs or groups of three. Plan to have the book read by Nov. 7th or earlier. Pairs or groups of three will write a collaborative paper to an AP prompt. Details will come later.
