Hi, Amy! I’ve been on holiday to Canada with my parents! We went by airplane, yet, the trip took 12 hours! We stayed in a hotel near Montreal, which is a cool town. The coolest thing I did was doing a boat trip to Niagara Falls, which is the most powerful waterfall in the world. The noise you hear is incredible, and the water really soaks you to the skin! You can see Niagara Falls on the front of the postcard. I even met somebody who’s going to Westgate College next year! Her name’s Catriona or something, but everybody calls her Cat. She’s about our age and very nice. She might be in our group next year! See you soon! Josie

10 Writing Voorbeeld Dear Headmaster, I think the school is a big mess. Our classrooms are untidy, and the playground looks a bit like a rubbish tip! This isn’t good, because it’s not healthy for everybody in the school. We should all do something about it, both students and the school management. I think there should be more bins, and someone to empty them. We could also make sure that people who throw rubbish on the floor must clean the place after school-time.

41 Writing Voorbeeld At this school, we have got more than 1,000 students. Everyday, at least 500 lemonade cans are bought in the school canteen. That’s 2,500 cans a week! All these cans are just thrown away. I think we should recycle them. That’s good for the environment, and it makes the lemonade a lot cheaper too, since recycled cans cost less money for the lemonade companies. I suggest we have separate bins in the canteen, some for the cans, and some for other rubbish. The school can send those cans to the recycle company here in Tolchester, which is only a few miles away.

Rechts zie je een reactie hierop, geschreven door zo’n ‘graffiti-vandaal’. 2 Daar kun je makkelijk je mening geven door te zeggen of je het een goed idee vindt om ‘graffiti-vandalen’ aan te geven. 43 Looking back 1 Op graffiti-artiesten.

44 Writing Voorbeeld Hi Sheffield Today, I’ve read the article about ‘tagging’ walls. Here’s my opinion. I don’t think there is a difference between a ‘tagger’ or an ‘artistic’ one. That’s just rubbish. The wall on the back side of our garden is ‘tagged’ sometimes. It is never artistic, and my Dad needs to paint that wall a few times a year. So I think somebody must do something against these idiots, whether they’re ‘taggers’ or ‘artists’. I think Crimestoppers is a very good idea, and I really hope it’s going to help! Greets, X

19 Xpress yourself! A 1 I stopped coming to Drama classes, when A started laughing at my accent. 2 Don’t worry about A. 3 A always starts bullying people she’s / he’s jealous of. 4 And A speaks cruelly to nearly all of us! 5 Being in the school basketball team frequently goes to his head. 6 He’s impossible. 7 Don’t take any notice of A. 8 B’s absolutely right, you should ignore A. 20 Writing Voorbeeld The latest musical I’ve seen is Tarzan. Everybody knows the story: A British ship sinks somewhere near the coast of Africa and the only survivor is a little baby. A gorilla finds the baby and names it Tarzan. Tarzan’s life isn’t going very well in the beginning, most of the other gorillas don’t like him, because he’s human. Years later Jane is on an expedition in the jungle, with her father. Tarzan and Jane fall in love, and of course they live happily ever after. The musical is very good. The story is easy to understand, even if you don’t know it. During the whole of the musical there is a lot to see around you. Songs, sound, clothing and drama are all very good. There also is a lot to laugh about during the musical. So the musical Tarzan really is a musical you should have seen, whether you know the story or not.

lesson 18 Cat gets the cream 21 The story 1 Today are the auditions for the school musical. 2 Cat. 3 Cat gets the main part!

24 Where and when? A 1 Interested? Meet me in front of the gate after school. 2 The Wildlife Group were counting bird’s nests in the woods this morning. 3 Spud was doing homework in his room last night. Last night Spud was doing homework in his room. 4 They were walking in front of us a quarter of an hour ago. B Voorbeelden 5 You know what, let’s meet here at my place at seven tonight. 6 I saw a badger under that tree this afternoon. 7 Mike was scared because he heard spooky noises in the woods last night. 8 The next walk starts in front of the school at eight o’clock tomorrow night.

28 Writing An adventure in the night Voorbeeld All three of us screamed when a man stepped out of the bushes, but it turned out to be a member of a wildlife group who was looking for poachers. He thought we were poachers! We told him we weren’t, and that we were just going home after our hockey training. He wouldn’t believe us and he called the police. In about ten minutes there came this police officer. He asked us some questions, and we gave him the telephone number of our hockey coach. The police man called him, and when our coach told him that we were at the training that night, the police officer believed us. After that, we quickly went home. Of course my parents were mad, and after that night I never went into the woods at night anymore.

I’d like to raise it, until it can live alone in the wild. But I don’t know how. Could you tell me what I can feed the badger, and what I should give him to drink. I don’t know how much I should give him either. And where should he sleep? I do have a hutch for my rabbit, I think the badger can sleep in there. I hope I can raise him, but when can I release him? Respect!

10 Writing A Voorbeeld Almost every day I hear or read about today’s youth. I hear they steal from shops, break windows and are rude. But I never hear they get punishment! I think schools don’t teach the kids respect, and schools don’t use corporal punishment if kids are rude. Teachers should use corporal punishment, like they did in my days. Our teachers used to punish us with the belt or the cane when we swore! That’s how we learned respect and responsility! B Voorbeeld I’m fed up with hearing only negative things about us teenagers! All I hear is that children are rude, they don’t do anything at school, and they break the windows of bus stops. Most students these days are as good as gold! Only a few pupils break windows and that sort of stuff. And it’s not teenagers who don’t have any respect. What about teachers? They definitely don’t show a lot of respect to us!

Some pupils have to stay behind after school. 2 She says Spud’s parents are the strictest parents she knows. 3 Both her parents are teachers. 4 She thinks they expelled him. 5 Expelling means kicking a student out of school. Excluding means students have to stay at home instead of going to school, while they still have to do the work. 6 Fighting, bullying or seriously breaking the rules. 7 You have to make the most original poster or feature about discipline. 8 Jess tells Josie to take something with her to give to Spud.

43 Writing A Voorbeeld Stonehenge is the world-famous stone circle on Salisbury Plain. The stone circle is four or five thousand years old, and people still haven’t discovered why it is there or what it is for. They think it used to be a place of sun worship, or an astronomical calendar. The biggest stone is incredibly heavy and the prehistoric builders moved it over 200 miles! Also, there isn’t anywhere in the world where the sunset is so amazing! The peaceful Church Farm campsite is in the safe, rural village of Larkhill. A bus stop is just a few minutes’ walk from that campsite. From 1901 to 1964 builders restored the stone circle in a series of makeovers, which have made it ‘a product of the 20th century tourist industry’. What we are looking at today is a 20th century restoration, which shows what Stonehenge perhaps looked like thousands of years ago. It is created by the tourist industry and is not the creation of prehistoric people. What we see is less than 50 years old.
