Second Grade Newsletter Jan. 18 - 22 Learning Targets: I Can (by the end of the week each student should be able to) 1. Use various strategies to add two 2-digit numbers. 2. Add 4 two-digit numbers. 3. Distinguish between facts (proven) and opinions (what someone thinks or feels). 4. Read, spell, and write words that end with er, and est. 5. Identify form of to be: am, is, are, was, were (verbs that do not show action but show what someone is or was). 6. Write about my opinion. BIG Question of the Week – Where do creative ideas come from? Story Title: A Weed Is a Flower Genre: Biography – tells about a real person’s life, but is written by another person. It is an example of nonfiction. Comprehension Skill: Fact and Opinion Fact – a statement that can be proven Opinion – a statement that tells someone’s ideas or feeling and cannot be proven

Language/Writing Verbs: Am, Is, Are, Was, Were – Some verbs do not show action; these verbs are forms of to be. The verbs am, is, and are tell about now. The verbs was, and were tell about the past. Use am, is, and was to tell about one person, place or thing. Use are and were to tell about more than one person, place, or thing. MATH We will continue to practice and learn strategies to use when adding two 2-digit numbers. Please ask your child about the different strategies we have practiced during class time. Have your child tell you which strategy he/she thinks is the easiest for them and why it is the easiest. We will also practice adding 3 and 4 numbers (23 + 30 + 45), by regrouping, (stacking the problem) or adding all the tens and then the ones and adding them together. Please continue to have your child practice basic addition facts to 20 at least 3 nights a week or whenever possible. You can use flashcards to practice these or asking them while riding the car is a great time too. We will also be taking our Chapter 4 Test on Friday, be looking for the study guide to come home on Thursday. Thank you!
