• Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight founded Nike on January 25, 1964 as “Blue Ribbon Sports.” However, it didn’t officially become “Nike, Inc.,” until May 30, 1978.

Where was Nike’s first production site?

• The first production site of Nike was in Japan. It began when Phillip Knights made a cold-call to Onitsuka Co. in Japan trying to convince the manufacturer of Tiger shoes to make him a distributor of the Tiger shoes in the US. But instead, when the first dozen shoes had arrived, Knights sent them to Bowerman, a track and field coach at the University of Oregon who previously attempted to establish a footwear but was ignored by the manufacturers, impressed, Bowerman offered Knight to become his partner and give his idea’s to Tiger.

What is the role of technology in Nike’s global expansion? • Nike seize opportunities in both MEDC and LEDC regions to promote or advertise the brand by paying millions just to put up billboards, create ad’s on television with famous athletes wearing Nike and it grabbed people’s attention. The ‘Just Do It’ motto is found in every corner you turn. They update their latest advertisements on the latest technology so that people wouldn’t feel like it’s old, and would see it evolving with them. Nike teamed up with Apple to monitor a person running, jogging or even power walking and see their performance, which goes through a radio in the Nike shoe and links to iPods. They partner or make business deals with climate-friendly companies to give Nike a better image to the public.

Sweatshops are either factories or workshops where workers in LEDCs work under poor, unhealthy and unhygienic conditions to produce clothing.

Why do you believe this global brand has been successful while others have not? • They use famous athletes, target younger audience and at that age people tend to want to buy anything and everything they want, especially if it’s a popular brand, they advertise their products on different websites that tend to catch the audience’s attention.

They tend to tell a story and focus on people’s emotions and social issues, such as handicapped and disabled people as well as other problems, and that is portrayed in their “Find Your Greatness” commercials. They focus majorly on football, which is the world’s most preferred sport, and for that they use some of the world’s best footballers.

Also, as technology has been increasing rapidly in the world, Nike didn’t let that go unnoticed. In fact, they always adopt the latest technology for their product and innovate new products. One of the things that make Nike successful, is the speed of the change of their products, as they’re constantly designing and creating new products.

Changing their products is not the only thing Nike has been successful at doing speedily as their speed at news reporting and advertising their newest products is quiet remarkable.
