Retention Of New Graduates 





National Council of State Boards of Nursing survey showed that entry level nurses and employers of these nurses rated the adequacy of preparation low. Research shows approximately 50% of new graduate nurses leave their initial employment within 6 months to 1 year of hire. Turnover costs can be as high as 1 to 1 ½ times the salary of the nurse.

Purpose of Preceptor Program 

Providing the graduate nurse with opportunities to consolidate and integrate nursing knowledge into practice, thereby increasing job satisfaction at the bedside.



Facilitating the graduate nurse’s transition from graduate nurse to a competent practicing registered nurse.



Promoting the continuing personal and professional development of the graduate nurse.

Formulating and achieving personal learning objectives for the new graduate.



Assisting the graduate nurse in developing effective skills in communicating with patients, families, and other health professionals.



Providing an opportunity to apply sound clinical judgment and critical thinking skills throughout the nursing process in the management of patient care.
