THE STEILNESET CONFERENCE 2011 Liv Helene Willumsen

Liv Helene Willumsen (f. 1948) er førsteamanuensis i historie ved Institutt for historie og religionsvitenskap, Universitetet i Tromsø. Hun er en av landets fremste eksperter på trolldomsprosessene i Finnmark. Hun har forsket på originalkildene til disse trolldomsprosessene i flere tiår og har skrevet doktorgrad om emnet. Willumsen har skrevet tekstene til minnehallen på Steilneset Minnested, Vardø. Dr. Liv Helene Willumsen (born 1948) is an Associate Professor in History at the Department of History and Religious Science, University of Tromsø. She is one of Norway’s leading experts on the witchcraft trials in Finnmark. She has been doing research on the original sources of the Finnmark Witchcraft Trials for several decades and has a PhD on the topic. Dr. Willumsen has written the exhibition texts to the Memorial Gallery at Steilneset Memorial, Vardø.

Peter Zumthor

Peter Zumthor (f. 1943). Som sønn av en møbelsnekker i Basel lærte Peter Zumthor tidlig å formgi et materiale. Han studerte ved Pratt Institute i New York på 60-tallet og arbeidet tidlig med historiske restaureringsprosjekter. I sine bygg utforsker Zumthor rom og materialers struktur og sanselige kvaliteter, noe som har ført til stor internasjonal anerkjennelse. Peter Zumthor bor og arbeider i Haldenstein i Sveits. Zumthor ble tildelt Pritzker-prisen i 2009, den mest prestisjetunge utmerkelsen for arkitekter. Peter Zumthor har tegnet Minnegalleriet og Flammehuset på Steilneset minnested. For Statens vegvesen, Nasjonale turistveger, har Peter Zumthor også i oppdrag å utvikle Almannajuvet innenfor Sauda i Ryfylke til en unik attraksjon.

Peter Zumthor (born 1943) studied architecture and industrial design at the Pratt Institute in New York in 1966. In 1968, he became conservationist architect for the Department for the Preservation of Monuments of the canton of Graubünden. This work on historic restoration projects gave him a further understanding of construction and the qualities of different rustic building materials. As his practice developed, Zumthor was able to incorporate his knowledge of materials into Modernist construction and detailing. His buildings explore the tactile and sensory qualities of spaces and materials while retaining a minimalist feel. Peter Zumthor lives and works in Haldenstein in Switzerland. In 2009 he won the prestigious Pritzker Price of architecture. Peter Zumthor has designed the Memorial Gallery and the House of fire at the Steilneset Memorial and is also involved in the National tourist route project at Allmannajuvet in Rogaland.

Meg Harris Williams

Meg Harris Williams (f. 1951) er litteratur kritiker og visuell kunstner med en særlig interesse for psykoanalyse og estetikk. Hun har skrevet mange artikler og bøker innenfor dette tverrfaglige feltet, inkludert et bidrag til utstillingskatalogen for Louise Bourgeois sin utstilling: Return of the Repressed. Tittelen på denne artikkelen er The Child, the Container and the Claustrum: the artistic vocation of Louise Bourgeois, basert på forskning ved Louise Bourgeois Studio i New York. Meg Harris Williams har forelest i mange land både innenfor litteratur, psykoanalyse og kunst med fokus på forbindelser mellom disiplinene. Hun underviser til daglig ved Tavistock klinikk og ved Foreningen for grupp og individuell psykoterapi. Meg Harris Williams (born 1951) is a literary critic and visual artist with a particular interest in psychoanalysis and aesthetics. She has written many articles and books in this interdisciplinary field, including a contribution to the exhibition catalogue for Louise Bourgeois: the Return of the Repressed, edited by Philip Larratt-Smith. (The title of this paper is ‘The Child, the Container and the Claustrum: the artistic vocation of Louise Bourgeois’, based on research at the Louise Bourgeois Studio in New York.) Other recent writings include ‘The role of incantation: lifedrawing as an analogue to psychoanalytic process’ (The Psychoanalytic Review, 2008), ‘Psychoanalysis as an art form’ (British Journal of Psychotherapy, 2009) and The Aesthetic Development: the poetic spirit of psychoanalysis (Karnac, 2010). Einar Niemi

Einar Niemi (f. 1943) er professor i moderne historie, Institutt for historie og religionsvitenskap, Universitetet i Tromsø. Undervisnings- og forskningsinteressen omfatter migrasjonshistorie, minoritetspolitikk, etnisk historie, regionalhistorie, grenseoverskridende transaksjon, byhistorie, kulturhistorie, vitenskapshistorie og historiografiske ”vendinger”. I særlig grad har hans studier vært konsentrert om Nordkalotten, Nordvest-Russland og Nord-Amerika Einar Niemi (born 1943) is a professor in Modern History, Department of History and Religion, University of Tromsø. Among his teaching and research interests are history of migration, minority policy, ethnic history, regional history, cross-border transaction, urban history, cultural history, history of science, and historiographical “turns.” In particular his studies are focused on the northern parts of the Nordic countries, Russia and North America.

Randi Rønning Balsvik

Randi Rønning Balsvik (f 1939), født og oppvokst i Vardø, er professor emerita i historie ved Institutt for historie og religionsvitenskap, Universitetet i Tromsø. Hun er en av landets fremste eksperter på etiopisk historie og har arbeidet i Afrika i flere år. Hun har publisert flere bøker i USA, Etiopia og Norge knyttet til sin forskning omkring etiopisk og afrikansk historie. Hennes siste bok ; “Det 20. århundrets historie: Et globalt perspektiv” utkom på Cappelen/Damm i 2010. Balsvik har undervist i afrikansk historie i 25 år ved Universitetet i Tromsø. Hun har også skrevet Vardø bys historie i to bind. Randi Rønning Balsvik (born 1939) is a professor emerita at the Department of History and Religious Science, University of Tromsø. She is one of the leading experts on Ethiopian history in Norway, and has been working in Africa for several years. She has published a number of books in USA, Ethiopia and Norway connected to African and Ethiopian history. Her last book , The 20. Century history: A Global perspective was published in 2010. Balsvik has been teaching in African history at the

University of Tromsø for 25 years. She is born and grew up in Vardø and has also written the history of Vardø.

Julian Goodare

Julian Goodare (f. 1957) er førsteamanuensis i historie ved Universitetet i Edinburgh. Han har vært direktør for The Survey of Scottish Witchcraft, en on-line database med referanser til alle hekseprosesser (witchcraft trials) i Scotland. Han har vært medredaktør for Witchcraft and Belief in Early Modern Scotland (Basingstoke:Palgrave Macmillan) 2008, en bok som var nominert til Katharine Briggs Folklore Award i 2008. Julian Goodare (born 1957) is a Reader in History, University of Edinburgh. He has been Director of the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft. He recently co-edited Witchcraft and Belief in Early Modern Scotland (Basingstoke:Palgrave Macmillan, 2008), with Lauren Martin and Joyce Miller. This book was shortlisted for the Katharine Briggs Folklore Award 2008.

Tor Einar Fagerland

Tor Einar Fagerland (f. 1968) er førsteamanuensis ved institutt for historie og klassiske fag ved NTNU. Han har siden 2003 vært sentral i å bygge opp et tverrfaglig studieprogram i kulturminneforvaltning og hvor han nå er faglig leder. Forskningsmessig har han de siste årene vært opptatt av det en kan kalle vonde eller mangetydige kulturminner og har bl.a forsket på nazistenes minnesmerker i Norge. Tor Einar Fagerhaug (born 1968) is an Associate Professor in History and Cultural heritage at the University of Science and Technology at Trondheim. He has since 2003 played a central role in establishing the Bachelor’s program in Cultural Heritage studies, an interdisciplinary program where he is the head of department today. His own research has been concentrated to painful and pluralistic cultural remains as for instance the cultural heritage of the Nazi from the Second World War in Norway.

Jan Olav Jensen

Jan Olav Jensen (f. 1959)er utdannet arkitekt i 1985 fra Arkitekthøyskolen I Oslo og er siden 2004 ansatt som professor samme sted. Han etablerte Jensen og Skodvin Arkitektkontor AS sammen med Børre Skodvin i 1995. I 1997/98 var han Kenzo Tange professor ved Harvard Universitetet, Boston, og mottok Aga Khan prisen i arkitektur for Lepra hospitalet i 1998. Han ble tildelt den svenske prins Eugen medaljen i 2006, og mottok den tyske Erich Schelling prisen i arkitektur i 2008 sammen med Børre Skodvin. Av bygninger deres kontor står bak kan nevnes, Mortensrud Kirke som de vant Grosch medaljen for i 2003, Tautra kloster nord for Trondheim, og for Nasjonal turistveg har kontoret blant annet hatt ansvar for Gudbransjuvet og Juvet landskapshotell i Geiranger. Jan Olav Jensen (born 1959) graduated from the Oslo School of Architecture and Design in 1985, and is, since 2004 a tenured professor the same place. He founded Jensen & Skodvin Architects with Børre Skodvin in 1995, after a period of private practice and employment at various offices. He has worked as a teacher and on juries at several universities. In 97/98 he was a Kenzo Tange Visiting Design Critic at Harvard University, Boston 1998 and received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture the same year for the Lepers´ Hospital. He was awarded the Swedish Prince Eugen Medal in 2006, and received the German Erich Schelling Award for architecture in 2008 with Børre Skodvin. Among the buildings the office has designed are Mortensrud Church in Oslo, Tautra Convent north of Trondheim, Juvet landscape hotel, and several of the National tourist road projects.

Beate Hølmebakk

Beate Hølmebakk (f. 1963 ) er arkitekt og professor ved Arkitektur- og designhøgskolen i Oslo hvor hun tok sin diplom i 1990. Hølmebakk har vært kunstnerisk professor ved Chalmers Tekniske univerisitet i Sverige og gjesteprofessor ved Cornell Universitetet i New York. Hølmebakks arbeider spenner fra ideelle undersøkende arkitekturprosjekter til realiserte bygg. Hennes arkitektkontor, Manthey Kula, har vært nominert til Mies van der Rohe prisen i 2009 og 2011.

Beate Hølmebakk (born 1963) is an architect and professor at The Oslo School of Architecture and Design, the school from where she graduated in 1990. Hølmebakk has been artistic professor at Chalmers Technical University, Sweden and visiting professor at Cornell University, New York. Her architectural work spans from investigations into specific programmatic fields to build projects. Her office, Manthey Kula has been nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award in 2009 and 2011.

Charis Gullickson

Charis Gullickson (f. 1980) er konservator ved Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum i Tromsø (NNKM). Opprinnelig er hun fra Alaska, men har bodd i Tromsø i syv år. Gullickson har mastergrad i kunstvitenskap fra Universitetet i Tromsø, og bachelorgrad i kunsthistorie fra Montana State University, Bozeman. Tittelen på mastergradsavhandlingen var Contemporary Artists from the Circumpolar Region: Aslaug Juliussen and Ronald Senungetuk. Gullickson har vært involvert i flere utstillingsprosjekter og publikasjoner. Hun har bl.a. vært hovedansvarlig for utstillingene Iver Jåks: Rekonstruert (NNKM 2010) og Paralleller (NNKM 2011). Charis Gullickson (born 1980) is employed as Curator at the Art Museum of Northern Norway in Tromsø (NNKM). Originally from Alaska, she moved to Tromsø seven years ago. Gullickson holds a MA in Art History from the University of Tromsø, and a BA in Art History from Montana State University, Bozeman. She defended her master's thesis titled, Contemporary Artists from the Circumpolar Region: Aslaug Juliussen and Ronald Senungetuk, in 2006. Gullickson has been involved in several art exhibitions and publications. She curated, among other exhibitions, Iver Jåks: Reconstructed (NNKM 2010) and Parallels (NNKM 2011).

Svein Rønning

Svein Rønning (f.1946) er billedkunstner og bosatt i Bergen. Han arbeider med maleri og utsmykking og er innkjøpt av de fleste norske offentlige kunstsamlinger, bl.a. Nasjonalgalleriet og Museet for Samtidskunst. Han var professor 2 i skulptur ved Kunsthøgskolen i Bergen 1994-2000 og er kurator og leder av Nasjonale Turistvegers kunstsatsing. www.sveinronning.net Svein Rønning (born 1946) is an artist and is living in Bergen. Sigrid Skarstein

Sigrid Skarstein (f. 1948) er direktør ved Varanger Museum IKS. Hun er utdannet historiker fra Universitetet i Bergen og har arbeidet som lærer ved Vadsø videregående skole og hos fylkesskolesjefen i Finnmark før hun ble leder ved Vadsø museum i 1994. Hun har skrevet artikler i museumshefter og –bøker, og har for øvrig hatt flere sentrale tillitsverv. Sigrid Skarstein (born 1948) is a director at Varanger Museum IKS. She is educated historian by the University of Bergen and has been working as a teacher and also by the School administration in Finnmark. In 1994 she became a leader by Vadsø Museum and has written a number of articles and has hold national honorary posts.
