ge + verb stem + (e)t 1. They work. 2. He has. 3. She lives. 4. It rains.

They worked. He had. She lived. It rained.

ge + irregular! 1. I pull. 2. She thinks. 3. She catches. 4. They fly.

I pulled. She thought. She caught. They flew.

Conversational Past nd 2

Haben/sein: conjugated in position Past participle (ge +) goes to the end. Ich fahre am Montag nach Grand Rapids =>

Ich bin am Montag nach Grand Rapids gefahren. (Regardless of how much other stuff is there!)

In Groups 1. We pulled for Hope College. 2. He built a house for her. 3. She caught the ball. 4. They have learned German.

Second verb at end! Also true for modals: Wir können die Bibel lesen.

Also true for verbs + verbs: Ich versuche den Weg zu finden.

Conversational Past Past participle for a separable verb: prefix + ge + root + t/en. ein + ge + root + en = eingeschlafen.

Note: the verb does not separate! Ich schlafe ein => Ich bin eingeschlafen.

In Groups 1. He fell asleep at 8:00p.m. 2. I cleaned up my room. 3. She hung up her coat. 4. We rode bikes to the cinema.

Conversational Past Past participle for inseparable verbs, and also for –ieren verbs: NO ge- prefix appears. Ich verkaufe meine Bücher => Ich habe meine Bücher verkauft. Ich verbinde die Alpen mit dem Süden. Ich habe die Alpen mit dem S. verbunden.

In Groups 1. He studied at 11:00p.m. 2. We were trying new wine. 3. They associated the sea with the North. 4. I sold my book to my friend.

Conjugating the Past: haben oder sein? TWO TESTS 1. Does it take a direct object? Then it will conjugate with haben. 2. If not, does it imply motion? Then it will conjugate with sein; otherwise, with haben. 3. But: sein itself, and also bleiben, with sein.
