Safer Internet Day History • Started as an initiative of EU SafeBorders project in 2004 • Adopted by Insafe in 2005 • Celebrated in more than 100 countries • Safer Internet Day 2014 will be the 11th annual celebration

U.S. Involvement • iSafe had been the U.S. host • Some activities across the country but not a lot coordination or publicity in U.S. • November 2012 (then) DHS secretary Janet Napolitano and EC VP Neelie Kroes sign joint US-EU declaration

ConnectSafely Involvement • Spring 2013 – Insafe’s Janice Richardson asks ConnectSafely.org to consider coordinating U.S. activities – requires support of “government agency” • Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Palo Alto) sends letter of support to E.C. • DHS agrees to support ConnectSafely’s involvement

Synch the U.S. with the global celebrations in a highly collaborative way Raise awareness of Safer Internet Day in the U.S. Serve as an information clearinghouse for all participants in the U.S. Promote safe, active participation Amplify youth participation and voice in global and U.S. discussion

Plans for SaferInternetDay.us • Publicize all events from all participants • Encourage participants to blog on the site • Post a calendar of events • Provide resource kits for: • Local event organizers • Talking points for media & interviewees • National organizations and partners • Schools, companies, local groups and individuals
