CURRENT APPOINTMENT Assistant Professor in Paediatric Infectious Diseases, 1st Dept of Paediatrics, School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, “Agia Sophia” Children’s Hospital, Athens (Prof G. Chrousos). Specialist Registrar in Paediatric Infectious Diseases at “Aghia Sophia” Children’s Hospital Infectious Diseases Dept MAKKA. I am responsible for all Greek HIV-infected children referred to our HIV outpatient clinic. My clinical responsibilities are also relevant to vaccine-preventable diseases since my department serves as a reference unit for treating patients with vaccinepreventable disases e.g during epidemics of measles, influenza, meningitis etc. I have also organised a vaccine outpatient clinic where different high risk patients referred to us by haematology-oncology, BMT unit, congenital haemoglobulinopathies unit etc for advise on their vaccination coverage. Head of the Immunobiology Research Lab at “Aghia Sophia” Children’s Hospital, involved in bacterial carbohydrate and protein vaccine research. I am actively involved in vaccinology since 1992 when as an MPhil student at the Institute of Child Health, UCL, UK, I developed serological methods for the investigation of " Quantitative and qualitative aspects of immune responses to polysaccharide vaccines among HIV-1 infected children" (MPhil Thesis; UCL, 1998). Following the completion of my studies in UK, I returned to Greece, where I established and run the Immunobiology research lab at "Agia Sophia" Children's Hospital, in Athens. Research in the laboratory focuses on the investigation of naturally and vaccine-induced immunity to a number of bacterial pathogens including S pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) and Neisseria meningitides. ELISA for the measurement of antibodies to Hib, N. Meningitidis and S pneumoniae are routinely run in the laboratory in conjunction with clinical trials. We are interested in the determination of protective vaccine-induced immunity in normal and highrisk groups. For that purpose we have developed a number of different immunological methods for identification of immunological correlates of protection e.g measurement of antibody avidity, specificity, Ig isotypes, opsonophagocytic and bactericidal antibody activity. An important focus of my research is the investigation of vaccine-induced immunological memory by a range of different methods e.g by FACS, cytokine production by ELISA and ELISPOT and antigen-induced proliferation assays which have been accordingly modified for early detection of specific memory cells. Methods developed in my lab have been applied in the investigation of vaccine–induced protective immunity in children with HIV, in premature babies, children with malignancies, bone marrow transplants and patients with Congenital Haemoglobulinopathies. In 2000 I was awarded with the Young Investigator Award by the European Society of Paediatric Infectious Diseases for my research on the ‘Kinetics of the immune response to the 23valent polysaccharide vaccine in bone- marrow transplant reciepients.’ In 2010 my research on the .The effect of anti-TNF treatment on the immunogenicity and safety of the 7-valent conjugate pneumococcal vaccine in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. published in the Vaccine. 2010 Jul 12;28(31):5109-13 was awarded with the 1st Award of Greek Society of Paediatrics In 2011 my research group was awarded with the 2nd Award of the Greek Medical Society for our work on the Identification of immunodominat B cell epitopes within pneumococcal surface proteinS. Since 2008 I am member of the European rotavirus vaccine.Expert Group. I am member of the editorial Board of BMC Pediatrics and I serve as reviewer in many journals including Vaccine.
