IMMIGRATION • Old immigrants

from Northern and Western Europe [mostly Protestant Christians] came before the Turn of the Century [1607 – 1876] did NOT welcome •New Immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe Who came at the Turn of the Century [1877 – 1920]

New Immigrants flooded the cities of America and lived in Ethnic Ghettoes - URBANIZATION

New immigrants lived in cities and worked in the new factories created around the new cities.

Identify the American Federation of Labor and Samuel Gompers. • AFL – One of the most important labor unions in U.S. History – Worked for “Bread and Butter” issues – higher wages, safer working conditions, 40 hour work week – One of the biggest unions ever – joined Congress of Industrial workers to form AFL-CIO • Samuel Gompers – One of the first leaders of the AFL – His popularity and success helped AFL grow in numbers – Stayed away for politics and concentrated on worker rights
