Tunnel of Oppression 2012 Info Session Jan 25 & 30

Overview Tunnel of Oppression began at Western Illinois University in 1993 Today is a nationwide campaign put on by many colleges, including SCU SCU students are strongly impacted by the oppression that is presented by Tunnel because it is so close to home and emotional. Two aspects of Tunnel: Oppression- Students experience various aspects of oppression, privilege, and power that affects SCU, the U.S., and the rest of the world. Hope- Offers goals and solutions that students can get involved in order to fight for social justice. The end of the tunnel includes an area for reflection.

Location/Dates/Times Location: Downstairs Locatelli Each club will get approx. 7x10 space, but we will work with you if you need more or less space. Week 3 of Spring Quarter (April 16-19) Set-up: Sunday Evening (time TBA) Monday: 11 am-5 pm Tuesday: 1-5 pm, 7-9 pm Wednesday: 11 am-5 pm Thursday: 1-5 pm, 7-9 pm Proposal: Due February 17th Budget: Each club/org. gets $50 Each club will get 2-3 t-shirts

Topics for TUnnel Topics that have been done in the past Sex and Gender: Violence against women, rape, assault, gender stereotypes, body image Religion, religious discrimination Sexuality, LGBTQ discrimination Racism, communities of color, discrimination Immigration Sustainability/Environmental justice

New possible topics Occupy Movement Islamophobia, 10 year anniversary of 9/11, Lowes pulling commercials from “All-American Muslim,” “Ground Zero Mosque” Ableism, people with disabilities Changing families, economy, career paths Holocaust Remembrance Day Thursday’s program falls on Holocaust Remembrance Day Possible tie in at end of week
