U.S. Soccer Federation Referee Program Grade 6 State Referee Course Most Competitive Games Within State and Region

Tactical Awareness o Defensive play o Man-to-man marking o Zonal marking o Attacking play o Direct play o Wide play o Pace play o Aerial play

Man-to-Man Marking o Player tactics o Increase in holding fouls o Greater potential for retaliation o Referee tactics o Get to a position to maximize view o Move quickly to location of foul to minimize retaliation

Zonal Marking o Player tactics o Defenders mark attackers within their zone o Defenders moving with speed may result in an unfair or reckless challenges o Referee tactics o Sprint to get close and adjust position o Assistant referee tactic o Be prepared to assist on counterattacks

Direct Play o Player tactics o Long aerial passes oA team changes defense into attack quickly, to put pressure on opponents o Excellent way of beating an offside trap o Referee tactics o Anticipate long balls o Quick reaction and sprinting is required to ensure a clear view and good angle

Wide Play o Player tactics o Ball is directed to teammates on either touchline who try to beat defenders and cross the ball into the penalty area o Referee tactics o Awareness of possible tactical fouls o Requires constant mobility o Wide views to see next phase of play

Pace Play o Player tactics o Players use their pace to turn defenders or chase the ball played in behind the defense o Holding fouls are likely o Referee tactics o Accelerate into a position with good angle of view to see between players o Assistant referee tactic o Be prepared to assist due to better angle

Aerial Play o Player tactics o Targets for teammates o Use aerial strength for scoring opportunities o More player contact o Referee tactics o Requires a lateral view o Aware of persistent infringement o Big decisions in the penalty area
