Setting the Pace for Success

St. Helena Hospital Core Values

Chairman’s column:

Caring for the Future

EXCELLENCE We exceed expectations.

In this issue’s interview with St. Helena Hospital President JoAline Olson, she likens building a center of health care excellence to a multi-stage race that never quite ends. While we all want to have access to the newest and most effective healthcare programs and equipment, it is very difficult in today’s economic environment for a small community hospital to afford this. Philanthropy has become an essential part of maintaining excellence for today’s hospitals.

RESPECT We treat others with dignity and compassion. ACCOUNTABILITY We take personal responsibility for all of our actions. INTEGRITY We act in harmony with our values. COMMUNITY We lead out in creating a healthy community. WHOLENESS We promote optimal health and healing in ourselves as well as others. 2007 Board of Directors

Serving as members of the Hospital Foundation Board, we have become keenly aware that the communities that will have access to the best health care in the future are those that have provided significant philanthropic support to their local hospitals. This reality became the basis for our launching Caring for the Future: the Campaign for St. Helena Hospital in October 2006. With 81% of our $27.5 million Campaign goal achieved at the time of this publication, we are heartened by tangible evidence that our community not only understands hospitals’ unique challenges but is also willing to support St. Helena Hospital in its commitment to provide superior medical care to the communities it serves. This issue is filled with inspiring stories of those who gave, and gave generously last year in support of the Hospital. It also showcases many of the caregivers whose compassion and competence are reflected in patient satisfaction surveys that continually award the Hospital the highest ratings. On behalf of the Foundation Board, we invite you to become our partner in making this a premier place of healing. One can take many paths as we pursue this course together: volunteering, sharing your thoughts on ways to improve, and continuing to invest your resources in an institution that holds interest to every individual in our community. With your support, St. Helena Hospital and all its services and programs will remain excellent and available for everyone when they are needed.

Sincerely,

Our Mission In serving the people of the Napa Valley and neighboring communities, St. Helena Hospital is committed to:

• Creating an effective environment for healing the whole person—physically, emotionally and spiritually. • Promoting this healing with skill, compassion and the highest standards of quality. • Helping individuals and families become responsible for achieving their optimum wellness. • Providing an atmosphere of dignity and loving care for those whose health cannot be restored. • Managing our resources efficiently and prudently in order to sustain our capacity for enduring service. • Empowering our staff to achieve the best expression of their professional skills. • Being an aware and responsive member of the communities we serve. What it Takes …

To Reach Success! When the Tour of California raced through wine country this winter, I was reminded of the difficulty involved in winning a long distance race. Raw speed does not guarantee victory in a multi-stage race that moves from urban time trials to winding coastal roads to steep mountain passes. Success requires a plan. Building a center of health care excellence is much like a multi-stage race. Talent is just one of the requirements. Careful preparation, the right strategy, and strength and commitment are all required to set and keep a pace that will lead to success. Thanks to donors like you, we have all of the elements for success at St. Helena Hospital. We have some of the most talented medical professionals and staff in the region. We have prepared for the future with an awareness of the economic challenges facing healthcare providers and

The Foundation Board welcomes three new members in 2006

patients. We have a strategy for success. Together with you, our community partners, we have the long-term commitment necessary to maintain our leadership position. This past year, we have added highly skilled doctors, acquired important new technology, and launched a plan to renew our facilities. We are where we want to be at this stage in the race to excellence. Success will require that we continue with our strategy of raising funds to bridge the gap between the reimbursements we receive and the cost of the care we provide. We are grateful to have so many generous community members who share our mission of quality and compassionate care for patients, their communities and future generations. It is humbling and exciting to serve such communities. As you will see in the remainder of this report, we are well positioned for success. But when it comes to the health of the community, the race is never over. We will continue to meet our commitment to provide the highest quality care today and for future generations.

Diane Livingston Diane and her husband, John, came to St. Helena in 1976 to raise their family of six children. The family established the Livingston Moffett Winery in 1984. She is the chair of the Grace Episcopal Church Growth Committee and a member of the Napa Valley Vintners, where she is on the Founding Committee for Premier Napa Valley and is chair of Member Services. Diane holds memberships at Meadowood and at Mayacama Golf Club, where she is Head of Women’s Golf.

Valerie Montgomery Valerie and her husband, Bob, have residences in Calistoga and Santa Barbara. She is active in both communities, having memberships at Santa Monica’s Bel Air Bay Club, Santa Barbara’s Birnam Wood Club, and here at Meadowood. She is a board member of Music Academy of the West, chair of the Santa Barbara International Wine Auction, and a member of the Napa Valley Opera House League. Valerie is also on the committee to help raise funds for a digital mammography machine at the Sansum Medical Clinic in Santa Barbara.

Andreas Sakopoulos, MD Andreas is a cardiovascular surgeon, board certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, who has been a member of the medical staff at St. Helena Hospital since 2003. He has brought several new procedures to the Napa Valley including endovascular repair of abdominal and thoracic aorta aneurysms using stent grafts and minimally invasive, comprehensive treatment of peripheral arterial disease using stents, grafts and FoxHollow’s SilverHawk for atherectomy.

The Legacy Circle: Planning for Tomorrow When people include St. Helena Hospital in their estate plans, they elevate our organization to the level of a family member. The Hospital has a long history of receiving bequests and deferred gifts from generous “family members.” These gifts have ranged from a few thousand dollars to over one million. To date, over 7 million dollars in bequests alone have been received and applied to programs and services at the Hospital. Robert and Valerie Peebles of St. Helena notified the Foundation that they had amended their estate plans soon after relocating from southern California. “We feel that it’s important to support local charities where we live,” Robert says. “We have both had experiences with St. Helena Hospital and never felt like just another number as we did at hospitals in larger cities. It’s nice to have a competent, professional hospital nearby should we need it.”

Often we learn of a donor’s estate plans only after their passing. The unfortunate aspect of these gifts is that we never have the opportunity to thank the donors for including the Hospital while they are still living. In 2006 the Foundation made plans to revitalize the Legacy Circle, increasing its recognition of donors who have included St. Helena Hospital in their estate plans. The Legacy Circle is a strictly honorary society of individuals who have made or enacted a bequest or other deferred gift. It has no dues or directors and there is no minimum gift amount required for membership. Legacy Circle members receive the benefit of regular updates on current issues involving estate planning and charitable gift planning. Recent mailings included updates on the charitable IRA rollover provision in the Pension Protection Act of 2006.

“We have both had experiences with St. Helena Hospital and never felt like just another number as we did at hospitals in larger cities. It’s nice to have a competent, professional hospital nearby should we need it.”

The Legacy Circle Steering Committee

Another benefit of Legacy Circle membership is the opportunity to pass on values to other family members. By investing in the Hospital, Legacy Circle members demonstrate that they value a healthy community for their children, grandchildren and future generations.

Virginia Van Asperen Honorary Chair 2007 As a successful businesswoman in retail, restaurants and wineries, Virginia has given her wide-ranging support to organizations throughout the Napa Valley. Virginia and her husband, Ernie, have funded charitable gift annuities with the Foundation that pay them fixed incomes for the rest of their lives.

John Pershing As a retired grower, John is an active and valued volunteer throughout the Napa Valley. John and his late wife, Fran, invested in St. Helena Hospital with a stock-funded charitable remainder trust. Their trust provides John a vehicle to donate stocks that no longer work in his portfolio, and it will pay him an income for the rest of his life.

Carol Sobczak Carol has practiced law since 1988 and maintains offices in downtown St. Helena and Napa. She is active in the local community as Presidentelect of St. Helena Rotary, vice president of St. Joan of Arc Parish Pastoral Council, and as an Executive Board member of the Napa Valley Bar Association. Carol is a certified specialist in estate planning, trust and probate law.

St. Helena Hospital

Recruits 13 Physicians in 2006 There is a well-known Jewish proverb that says, “Don’t live in a town where there are no doctors.” Well, those living in the upper Napa Valley and Lake County communities can be assured that these are areas filled with skilled, compassionate physicians. Among the physicians St. Helena Hospital welcomed in 2006 is Emergency Room physician Rodney Look, MD. Dr. Look comes from a varied and fascinating background. Following college, he worked as an archaeologist in the Middle East and then served as a missionary in Nigeria, founding the Nigerian Prison Outreach. After extensive travel, he met his wife, Adair, and they both decided to pursue medical degrees together. In 2005, Adair and Rodney Look both finished their Harvard residencies. Dr. Adair Look is a psychiatrist specializing in eating disorders.

Rodney Look, MD Emergency Medicine

Dr. Look says that the St. Helena Hospital Emergency Department was exactly what he was looking for. “I wanted to find a community hospital that could offer me a long-term, stable career.” Dr. Look has worked for major trauma centers, most recently at Marin General. He appreciates the opportunity he has at St. Helena Hospital to spend quality time with each patient who enters the Emergency Department. “Here patients have the advantage of not getting lost in the system. It’s like the difference between going to a major university and a private liberal arts school; at St. Helena Hospital, you are able to have the focus of the entire staff.”

St. Helena Hospital Emergency Department recently received the distinction of having the highest patient satisfaction in the United States, awarded by NRC Picker, a national patient satisfaction research firm. Dr. Look attributes this success to an emergency care facility that works from the top down. “You can’t have patient satisfaction unless you have a system that works for patients. There is clear and regular communication between the staff and those who can put long-range goals into action and solve patients’ concerns.” Even with these outstanding ratings, there are a few important things to keep in mind before visiting the Emergency Department. “Things always take longer than you expect,” Dr. Look says. “Sometimes the answers aren’t clear and we have to rule out the most detrimental possible causes. I tell my patients to be prepared for the worst but hope for the best.” Outside of work, if Dr. Look isn’t skiing, mountain climbing, sky diving or cycling, you will most likely catch him in line at a local coffee shop. “It’s my vice,” he says cheerfully. Adair and Rodney Look, their three-year-old son, Jansen, and 11-monthold daughter, Austen, currently live in the Bay Area but are in the process of relocating to the St. Helena area.

Auction Napa Valley

and Local Vintners Improve Patient Safety

Improving the Patient Experience St. Helena Hospital launched its Clinical Information System called Project IntelliCare (PIC) in early June of last year. PIC is a paperless system that enhances patient safety and the quality of patient care. This endeavor was made possible with a multi-million dollar investment by Adventist Health, a million dollar grant from the McMinn Foundation and a $500,000 grant from Auction Napa Valley. This project is yet another reflection of our distinct commitment to the quality of care we give our valued patients. Imagine for a moment that Mary comes into the Emergency Room because she suddenly has trouble seeing in one of her eyes. With a few clicks on the computer, the physician or nurse can access Mary’s medical records and see that she has a history of strokes. Her health history includes such key data as vital signs, lab test results, outcomes of radiological exams, medication information, physician instructions and so forth. Not only does this make life simpler for the physicians and nurses, but many steps in the care process are now automated, making for enhanced delivery of safe, efficient, high-quality care.

Improving Patient Safety Patient safety has always been a priority at St. Helena Hospital. With the introduction of PIC, safety as well as other elements of patient care have improved: • Multiple caregivers can log on to the database and view the same Anne and Chuck McMinn were instrumental in making Project IntelliCare, a computerized health information system, possible.

information simultaneously from different locations in the Hospital. • Patient charts are password protected providing greater security than when sitting on a shelf on the patient care unit.

“ I have seen firsthand how advanced information technology has transformed other industries from computers to telecommunications to consumer products. Systems like Project IntelliCare can increase customer satisfaction and responsiveness, reduce costs, streamline internal operations and enhance communications. These traits are especially important in the healthcare industry now, as Medicare and private insurers’ decreasing payments must be matched with increased productivity without adversely impacting patient care. Project IntelliCare is not sufficient by itself to St. Helena Hospital’s ongoing competitiveness, but I could not see us getting there without it. Anne and I were happy to be able to help make this transition happen.” – Chuck McMinn St.Helena Hospital ~ 2006 Annual Report

• The amount of time spent searching for patient information is dramatically decreased. • Physicians and nurses are able to deliver better care and work more effectively because the resources they need are so readily accessible. For instance, test results that were once hand-carried are now available online. Patient vital signs can be quickly converted to graphs for easy reference. Many physicians can simultaneously access patient data anytime, day or night, from their homes or office using the secure, Web-based connection. • This system enables Hospital staff to produce timely, accurate and complete information as required by government and regulatory agencies. Because of the system’s data collection capabilities, we are better able to monitor performance, highlight areas of risk and identify areas that need improvement.

By expediting the flow of information and enhancing the communication stream, our investment in advanced healthcare information technology has made the healthcare process safer and more efficient for the nearly 80,000 patients who visit the Hospital each year.

When we work smarter and safer, patients win.

New Technology Benefits Diabetes Patient “I cannot explain what a difference this has made in my life. I call Dr. Sakopoulos a magician.” At age 66, Ron Cia, rides horses, walks for recreation, and goes to the gym to lift weights, participate in aerobic exercise and to stretch, all because it is fun and it aids him in the effort to keep his diabetes in check. But over the past three years, growing pain in his buttocks and thighs has made it tiring for him to walk. “I thought it was my back. My family doctor told me to tough it out, so I worked through the pain,” he says. Eventually, he could walk no more than a block. “I would feel weak and have to rest,” he says. “It was depressing.” His family doctor thought his problem was sciatica or pain caused by an irritation or compression of a nerve located in the lower back. His doctor prescribed physical therapy. But when the therapy seemed to make no difference, his doctor referred him to St. Helena vascular surgeon, Emmett Tetz, MD, to see if the problem was with circulation in his legs or peripheral vascular disease (PVD). PVD, which occurs when harmful plaque builds up in the arteries of the legs constricting normal blood flow, is a silent disease often without symptoms. Identifying the problem requires knowledge of the disease and screening. Dr. Tetz performed a simple test to check the pulses in his arms and legs. “Dr. Tetz told me that in one of my legs the blood flow was completely blocked. I had no pulse,” Ron says. Using the new technology of St. Helena’s 64-slice CT scan, the extent of Ron’s peripheral vascular disease was clear. Dr. Tetz was able to definitively diagnose Ron’s problem and determined that he was a candidate for an endovascular procedure. “The artery was completely blocked in one leg and the other was partially blocked,” Ron said. Ron benefited from the less invasive cutting edge technology. Andreas Sakopoulos, MD, opened his arteries using catheters and stents instead of large surgical incisions. “I stayed one day in the Hospital after the surgery,” Ron says. Within an hour after surgery, Ron was up and walking the halls of the Hospital. “It was like a light got turned on,” he says. “I cannot explain what a difference this has made in my life. I call Dr. Sakopoulos a magician.” Ron is now back to riding horses, going to the gym and walking 45 minutes a day. Ron attributes his quick recovery to the complete care he received at St. Helena Hospital. “I know that everything that can be done, has been done,” he says.

His says his treatment at St. Helena Hospital has always been excellent. “Four years ago, I had a four-way bypass at St. Helena Hospital. Afterwards I had a complete follow through. They sent a nurse to my home. I attended cardiac rehabilitation three days a week. I spoke with a dietitian about eating to improve my heart. And the result was that in less than a month I was in Hawaii. I felt good.” Those with the following conditions are at greater risk for peripheral vascular disease (PVD): • Diabetes - PVD is very common in people with diabetes. • Nicotine addiction - The risk of PVD decreases dramatically when people stop smoking. • Obesity • High blood pressure • Family history of PVD • Sedentary lifestyle • Coronary Artery Disease • High cholesterol • Over 65 years of age

Wilfred Huse, MD, Dr. Huse meets with Vice-president Lyndon Johnson.

The Huse Family is making a significant gift to establish an appropriate memorial for Dr. Huse. A new state-of-the-art Cardiovascular/ Peripheral Vascular Lab will be named in his honor beginning in 2009. Plans call for a photo of Dr. Huse to be displayed in a plaque outside the new lab so that he may continue to inspire physicians at St. Helena Hospital, as he did for so much of his career. St.Helena Hospital ~ 2006 Annual Report

early pioneer of open heart surgery, leaves a legacy Wilfred Huse, MD, a cardiothoracic surgeon at St. Helena Hospital, and one of the pioneers of open-heart surgery at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, passed away in southern California on October 26, 2006. Dr. Huse joined the St. Helena Hospital cardiac surgery program in 1975. With his leadership, The Cardiovascular Center at St. Helena Hospital expanded and grew to become one of the top heart programs in the San Francisco Bay Area. Huse was a member of the St. Helena Hospital Medical Staff for 31 years. He performed more than 3,771 surgeries as the principal surgeon in the St. Helena OR. Dr. Huse was board-certified in both surgery and thoracic surgery. Dr. Huse was described as a quiet man who came alive in the operating room. Members of the OR team say his surgical technique was remarkable. “It was beautiful to observe him in surgery. He was very efficient. There was no wasted motion,” says John Jacobson, MD, St. Helena Hospital cardiothoracic surgeon, and an associate and former student of Dr. Huse at Loma Linda University Medical School. Ellsworth E. Wareham, MD, Huse’s professor in general surgery (now retired), and someone he spent long hours with in the development of a heart-lung machine says, “We learned heart surgery together.” Wareham describes Dr. Huse as an outstanding surgeon. “He was cool and technically capable during surgery. He was both conservative and cautious when he needed to be.” “Heart surgery is the most challenging surgery there is because the heart has to work afterwards or there is no patient,” says. Dr. Wareham. “This is the kind of surgery where you see the mettle of a young man. Wilfred took the challenge and was outstanding.” Dr. Wareham and Dr. Huse traveled with the Loma Linda Overseas Heart Surgery Team in the early 1960s, establishing cardiac programs around the world and training general surgeons in open-heart surgery. “He finished his residency when we were in Karachi, Pakistan. We were there at the behest of Lyndon Johnson when he was vice president during the Kennedy administration,” says Dr. Wareham. This first trip was sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. Later both physicians met with President Richard Nixon in the White House Oval Office after establishing a Heart Center in Greece. Dr. Huse was born in Zimbabwe in 1931 to missionary parents. The family moved to New Zealand in 1932 and then to the United Kingdom. He graduated from Birmingham University Medical School in 1954. While there, he earned the degree of Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. He married Margaret Palmer, a fellow graduate, in 1956. They moved to Glendale, California, in 1963, where Dr. Huse began working with Dr. Wareham. He built one of the first heart-lung machines at White Memorial Hospital. He was invited to join the faculty of Loma Linda University Medical Center and remained on staff there for some 20 years, later moving to St. Helena Hospital to establish the cardiovascular center.

Auction Napa Valley Supports the Women’s Center Programs and Services In 2006 the Women’s Center of St. Helena Hospital provided more than 80 mammograms and more than 20 ultrasounds

A family participates in the Women’s Center annual Latino Family Health Fair, which provides free screenings and health education to the community.

(follow up to mammography) at no cost to women in the Napa Valley community who are unable to afford these screenings. The Women’s Center is able to provide these important preventive screenings to women who are without insurance due to generous donations from Auction Napa Valley, private donors and fundraising events. A recent client at The Women’s Center wrote on her customer evaluation, “Thank you for the funds for the uninsured! I am so appreciative!” Community support made important tests possible for this woman. In addition, funding received from Auction Napa Valley in 2006 will support the purchase of a digital mammography machine for the Women’s Center. Digital mammography is a new technology which improves visibility, minimizes retakes, reduces x-ray exposure and allows for easier transfer of information. Most importantly, digital mammography helps improve cancer detection rates.

Early detection is the best defense against breast cancer, and mammography remains the best tool for diagnosing breast cancer. Estimates show that approximately 110 people in Napa County will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year (California Cancer Facts & Figures, 2007). Since opening in 1992, the Women’s Center has provided state-of-the-art mammography testing. The Center now offers MammoPads‚, which provides a softer, more comfortable mammogram experience. The Women’s Center is committed to providing community education and state-of-the-art diagnostic testing for breast cancer and osteoporosis in a comfortable atmosphere with caring, compassionate staff. For more information about programs and services available at the Center, please call (707) 963-1912.

Setting the Pace:

Accomplishments in 2006

In 2006, the Cardiovascular Center earned these distinctions. • St. Helena Hospital (SHH) finished in the top 10 percent of the nation in the treatment of heart failure in a groundbreaking patient quality improvement project sponsored by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). St. Helena was the only California hospital to achieve this recognition. • For the fifth consecutive year, HealthGrades has rated SHH best in the North Bay/North Coast region for cardiology services. Screenings: • Approximately 200 people participated in free vascular screenings provided by SHH in Napa and Lake Counties in 2006. Using a Doppler ultrasound the screenings painlessly evaluated individuals for three major vascular diseases, carotid artery disease, abdominal aortic aneurysm and peripheral arterial disease

New Technologies and Services Minimally invasive aortic aneurysm repair, a new procedure that is less invasive than surgery to repair abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms, is now available to SHH patients. Patients may have a hospital stay of only a few days and return to normal activity within six weeks. SHH is the only hospital in the North Bay region to perform this procedure. Minimally invasive treatment of PAD, includes a new, non-surgical procedure to treat the painful symptoms of peripheral arterial disease (PAD). A device uses a tiny rotating carbide blade to shave plaque from the arteries of the legs and opens them up for blood flow. 64-Slice CT, a revolutionary diagnostic device for heart disease that can capture highresolution images of the heart and coronary arteries so quickly that it freeze-frames the heart while it’s beating and allows doctors to visualize the heart in less than 10 seconds, revealing blockages in blood vessels and other heart problems that are sometimes not easily detectable with other tests. SHH is the first provider in Napa and Lake Counties to offer this new diagnostic tool to the community. The new technology, a Toshiba Aquilion 64-slice CFX scanner, allows doctors to visualize the heart in less than 10 seconds, revealing blockages in blood vessels and other heart problems that are sometimes not easily detectable with other tests. St. Helena Hospital is the first provider in Napa and Lake Counties to offer this new diagnostic tool to the community. 11

Quick repair of PFOs gives patients a new option, in the treatment of congenital heart conditions such as patent foramen ovale (PFO) and atrial septal defect (ASD). These conditions can be treated with an implanted device that closes the defect and allows tissue to grow over it. Until recently, treatment for PFO has been limited to a lifelong regimen of blood-thinning drugs or openheart surgery. Because the implantation does not involve surgery, patients often return home on the same day and can return to an active lifestyle in just a short time. Nuclear medicine imaging combined with a CT scan, an addition to SHH’s existing nuclear imaging program, is now available for heart patients and for many other diagnostic applications. The camera allows the radiologist to see clearly how the heart—and other organs—are functioning. PET/CT, a hybrid technology combining positron emission tomography (PET) and computerized tomography (CT), provides better imaging data and notably increases patient comfort and convenience by reducing the scanning time. PET/CT has become a vital component for many oncology and neurology applications. Telehealth introduces virtual nursing, once thought of as futuristic, is now a part of the services offered through SHH’s Home Care Services. A compact touch-screen monitor allows home health nurses to monitor patients with chronic conditions like congestive heart failure and diabetes.

Community Benefits 2006 • Provided multi-lingual health education to 11,000 participants via Healthy Moms and Babies classes, the annual Latino Family Health Fair, the Binational Health Week Fair and other health education programs.

• Provided childbirth education to 508 individuals. • Support groups benefited 2,264 people. • Sponsored senior fairs in Calistoga, St. Helena and Yountville, attended by 181 people. • Latina Advisory Board sponsored Latina Family Fair, attended by 150 people • Joined in partnership with the Spirit of Women; launched Girls’ Night Out. • Provided 133 free bone density tests and 94 free mammograms; provided 31 free ultrasounds. • Provided free or low-cost blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar screenings to 2,904 people at 88 community screenings. • Provided 1,002 screenings for area employees through the WorkWell Program.

St.Helena Hospital ~ 2006 Annual Report

Maria Peña, RN

Exemplifies Excellence at St. Helena Hospital Several years passed and Maria heard nothing more about Susie until a young woman approached her at the Harvest Festival in St. Helena. She asked if Maria was a nurse at the Hospital. It was Susie! She then told Maria, “What you said to me that day saved my life – it changed how I dealt with my life from then on.” That was an “ah ha” moment for Maria – when she became very aware that simple things can make a big difference.

Responding to the needs of patients is not only what nurses are trained to do – it is part of the plan for success at St. Helena Hospital. “Administration fosters a culture of whole person care,” states Maria Peña, RN, team leader of the Emergency Department (ED). If you can catch up with Maria, she will tell you stories that give evidence of the best possible care given by top-notch doctors, nurses and ancillary personnel in a spirit of collaboration, compassion and giving.

Why is it difficult to catch up with Peña these days? Because success requires not only well-trained and compassionate medical professionals but also careful planning and the right strategy. Maria and her staff are immersed in both – and with great results! After a visit to the St. Helena Hospital ED, patients are sent a satisfaction survey. The survey, developed and administered by consulting firm NRC Picker, groups questions into six categories: information and education, physical comfort, emotional support, respect for patient preferences, continuity of care, and access and coordination of care. Each category includes a series of questions. The department chose four questions from these categories to focus on: Would you recommend St. Helena

“ You never know at the moment you are called into action the lasting results it may have and how it changes a person.” Joan and Bob Smith* were vacationing in the Napa Valley when Bob experienced severe abdominal pain. When they arrived at the Emergency Department, the medical team went into action with labs, scans and blood work. The news was not good – advanced stage liver cancer. Keeping Bob comfortable and pain-free became priority. But the care did not end with the diagnosis and pain management. The doctor in charge made arrangements for the best possible medical care in Bob’s hometown. One very special nurse helped make travel arrangements for Joan and Bob’s return home and for support once they arrived there. But the care did not even end at discharge. Throughout Bob’s fight with cancer, Joan kept in touch with the emergency room staff, often expressing gratitude for the care and support they both received at the Hospital. And by the time Bob’s fight ended, a friendship had formed with that special nurse that continues today. “You never know at the moment you are called into action the lasting results it may have and how it changes a person,” Maria says. Maria goes on to describe one of her most memorable Emergency Room experiences. At age 14, Susie* came to the ED as a serious suicide attempt, adamant that she did not want to see her parents. The medical team on duty stabilized her while Maria dealt with the patient’s distraught parents. The situation calmed when Maria told them, “I know you want what is best for your daughter – so do we.” The parents, who were going through a divorce at the time, gave Maria permission to act as the intermediary and talk to Susie. Maria remembers telling Susie, “This [divorce] is their thing; you don’t have to figure it out.”

Hospital ED services? Did you know who to call after leaving? Did the ED doctor discuss fears and anxieties? Did the ED nurses talk as if the patient was not there? Recent results from the survey show that St. Helena Hospital’s ED received great marks when compared to others across the nation. In fact, five of the composite scores were higher than the national benchmark. “We are rated highly by our patients; there is no other way to put it,” says St. Helena Hospital’s resource and performance improvement specialist, Mary Bergerson. And that’s not all! Maria Peña is also St. Helena Hospital’s patient advocate – a position that is rarely sought after in any hospital but one for which Maria has developed a passion. She has discovered that while people can be very upset and negative at first, it usually boils down to someone having a need that isn’t being met – getting correct information, understanding the paperwork, clarifying assumptions or an underlying fear on the part of the patient. “People just want to be heard,” Maria states. “It’s all a matter of managing a patient’s expectations and minimizing their anxiety.” Maria Peña, RN is one amazing nurse doing amazing things at St. Helena Hospital. “Her strength lies in her leadership. She is an advocate for patients but she also acts as a leader to bring about change. This is a rare but important quality in a charge nurse. She is a voice for both the Emergency Room staff and for patients,” says Emergency Department physician, Rodney Look, MD. She does indeed “Set the Pace for Success” at St. Helena Hospital. * Actual names not used to protect confidentiality.

When Giving Is All in the Family

Gina Trinchero, along with her parents Bob and Evalyn, has established the Trinchero Transformations Scholarship fund to benefit individuals in Center for Health programs.

When Gina Trinchero needed to find a 50th wedding anniversary gift for her parents, longtime St. Helena Hospital Foundation supporters Evalyn and Bob Trinchero, she was at a loss. She wanted to do something special, something that “was not a toaster.” But what? Knowing the important role St. Helena Hospital has played in her parents’ lives, Gina turned to Hospital Foundation President Elaine John for some ideas, one of which was supporting the new Transformations program in the Hospital’s Center for Health. “We are an Italian American family whose lives center around food and drink,” notes Gina. “Although that lifestyle is part of who we are, we also understand the possible consequences and the need to take care of ourselves.” With the notion of helping people outside her own family to find a healthy balance in their lives, Gina’s gift to her parents became a gift to others when she created the Trinchero Transformations Scholarship Fund for individuals who would benefit greatly from a Transformations or other Center for Health program, but may not have the means to participate. Bob and Evalyn were delighted with the gift and were notably proud of Gina’s philanthropic choice—so much so that they made a contribution to the scholarship fund, as did Bob’s siblings Roger Trinchero and Vera Torres for a total of $175,000 to help people they may not even know to make a positive change in their lives. One such person is Harlan Eldred, a landscape photographer from Bishop, California. After smoking for 38 years, Mr. Eldred completed St. Helena’s Center for a Smoke-Free Life program in August 2006 and finds that he is happier and healthier than ever. “My life has been greatly improved since I quit smoking,” says Harlan. “I have more energy, a better attitude and my food even tastes good.” He also appreciates the moral support he has received since leaving the Center for Health. Regular phone calls from the staff, letters of encouragement and an open phone line have been important tools to help keep him smoke free. Although he may never meet Gina Trinchero, Harlan is forever grateful for her support. “It was the perfect program not only for me, but for my whole family,” he says. For Gina, who created the scholarship to honor her own family, those words are the perfect gift.

“ My life has been greatly improved since I quit smoking,” says Harlan. “I have more energy, a better attitude and my food even tastes good.”

Grateful Patient

Leaves Legacy to Crystal Springs Thanks to the generosity of a grateful patient and his wife, rooms at Crystal Springs have received a major facelift. Bill Wilder of Clearlake was hospitalized at St. Helena Hospital several times between 1990 and 2006. His last stay was in February 2006, and he was hospitalized for more than three weeks before he passed away. His wife, Lynne, stayed by his side as much as possible, taking a room in Crystal Springs located just behind the main Hospital buildings. Lynne says, “When someone is that sick, they want their loved one nearby, and staying in a hotel downtown just isn’t close enough.”

Lynne and Bill Wilder’s generosity has given Crystal Springs a new look.

“ When someone is that sick, they want their loved one nearby, and staying in a hotel downtown just isn’t close enough.”

Lynne says, “Bill was a very colorful and generous man. He was a principal in the Manhattan Mercury Mine during the 1960s and subsequently developed the McLaughlin Homestake Gold Mine, the largest gold deposit in 100 years in California.” A book has been written about Bill and his ventures, The Oral History of Mining. The Wilders became active and generous members of the Lake County community, building a cinema in Clearlake (“for the kids,” says Lynne), donating property for a new library and funding police cars. While Lynne resided in Crystal Springs, she came up with an idea that would make a long stay much more pleasant and workable for family members who are going through the tough times of serious family illness. She shared her idea with Bill one day and he immediately agreed. At one time the Wilders had planned on establishing summer vacation homes in Lake County. They purchased several rooms of hotel furniture in preparation for their project but then decided against it. Lynne’s idea was to donate their furniture to the Hospital to upgrade the rooms in Crystal Springs. Whie Oh, MD, put the Wilders in touch with Pat Lapera, director of provider relations at St. Helena Hospital, and the “Crystal Springs Facelift” was born. Pat Lapera says, “Crystal Springs helped keep Lynne constantly by her husband’s side. This was so important. Thanks to the Wilders’ generosity, we have the opportunity to vastly improve our family accommodations.” For more information on how you or your family members can use the Crystal Springs facilities while loved ones are in the Hospital, please call the Crystal Springs reservation line at (707) 963-6439. 15

Calistoga Ranch Partners with the Foundation

Calistoga Ranch Introduces New Members to the Community in 2006 to provide President’s Forum memberships to their first 30 Phase II Lodging Club buyers. With each new buyer, Calistoga Ranch has donated $1,250 in his or her name, thus introducing these new residents of the Upper Napa Valley to St. Helena Hospital.

“We are delighted to make these contributions on behalf of our new owners as a way of supporting a significant community institution,” says David Deniger, chairman, Olympus Real Estate Partners. “Some of our vintner members serve on the Foundation board and it is a pleasure to partner with them in the work of maintaining the excellent quality of health care for everyone in the Napa Valley.” He continues: “An introductory membership in the President’s Forum of the Foundation is another great way for our owners to become part of the authentic Napa Valley community. We expect some of our owners will continue to support the St. Helena Hospital Foundation for many years to come.”

Supports the Annual Fund The President’s Forum of St. Helena Hospital represents over 250 individuals who contribute to the Hospital’s success by providing major financial support. These gifts ensure that the Hospital maintains top technology and medical services in the community. In 2006, President’s Forum members raised $260,000 in support of St. Helena Hospital’s Annual Fund. These gifts continue to make a difference in the lives of community members and visitors to the Napa Valley. In recognition of their generosity, we offer members two Preferred Living Series events annually, featuring leading authorities on important health issues. Our first Preferred Living Series event of the year was held at Meadowood Napa Valley in March 2006. Guests listened as Carl L. Keen, PhD, presented “Polyphenols, epicatechin and vascular function - An insight into the health benefits of diets rich in fruits, vegetables and chocolate!” Dr. Keen is a professor of Nutrition and Internal Medicine and chair of the Department of Nutrition at University of California, Davis.

The October President’s Forum event, underwritten by Wells Fargo Private Bank, was hosted by Calistoga Ranch. Robert G. Miller, MD, chair of Neurosciences and director of the Forbes Norris ALS Research Center at California Pacific Medical Center, spoke on “Being a Good Steward of our Aging Brain: Examining the aging process and exploring what we can do to promote successful aging, preserve our memory and protect our brain.” Become a member of the President’s Forum: join the legions of supporters who have helped sustain St. Helena Hospital by contacting Melinda Greene or Rachelle Newbold at (707) 963-6208. For more information about Calistoga Ranch, go to www.calistogaranch.com or call (707) 254-2800 or 800-942-4220.
