As evidenced by the annual report that follows, the 2010-2011 academic year was again filled with significant accomplishments and exciting activities. Our students came to us in record numbers and continue to amaze us as they earn academic and athletic honors. Our college did great things this past year despite having significant funding cuts. But as we tell our students, the ability to persevere through difficult times is how you earn sustained greatness. Because we have a very talented faculty and staff, and because we have extraordinary support from our community, Northampton Community College continues to thrive. To witness firsthand a dynamic learning environment that inspires students from all walks of life, one only need visit any of our campuses. The College’s annual follow-up survey of 2010 graduates showed a high percentage had found employment or are continuing their edu­ cation. Eighty-seven percent of the 1,565 members of the class of 2010 responded to the survey. Eight percent indicated that they were job hunting. Forty-eight percent reported being employed. Another 44 percent said that they are pursuing further education. The 2010 graduates are working for a wide variety of local busi­ nesses and non-profit organizations including B. Braun Medical, Victaulic Company of America, Valley Youth House, Teva Pharma­ ceuticals, Guardian Life Insurance and Crayola, as well as all area hospitals and various medical and dental practices. Graduates in the following majors reported the highest me­ dian starting salaries: electromechanical technology: automated systems – $64,001; dental hygiene – $55,120; computer informa­ tion technology security option and computer maintenance and service technology – $54, 080; registered nursing and diagnostic medical sonography – $49,316; and emergency services – $48,672. Members of the class of 2010 who chose to continue their edu­ cation enrolled in 91 different educational institutions. The most popular were East Stroudsburg University, Kutztown University, DeSales University, Penn State University, Cedar Crest College and Temple University. Drexel, Moravian, Lafayette and Muhlenberg College were also on the list. The overall placement rate for members of the class of 2010 was 91 percent, with 89 percent of respondents from career pro­ grams indicating that they are employed in fields of their choice. The graduate survey is conducted each year by the Career and Work/Life Services Office at Northampton Community College.

1,565 graduates participated in the year’s two commencement ceremonies, received their diplomas and began a new chapter in their lives. They enthusiastically applauded two of the most inspiring commencement addresses in the history of the College. ”Nobody gets to where they want to be by taking a straight path,” Roger Ross Williams told the graduates at winter commencement on January 29. When Williams graduated from NCC in 1983, he had no idea what he wanted to do with his life and no plan for the future. Now he has an Oscar for directing and producing a documentary that is changing attitudes and lives. Williams told how his life, like the life of Prudence Mabhena, the young African woman whose story he chronicles in his HBO documentary film, has involved risktaking, adventure and reinventing himself as new opportunities and challenges have presented themselves. Then at the May commencement, Marian Wright Edelman recalled the values instilled by her preacher father and the other elders in the small South Carolina town where she grew up. The founder and president of the Children’s Defense Fund and the recipient of numerous awards for her humanitarian work did not mince words in speaking to the graduates. After congratulating them on their accomplishments, she urged them to ”wander off the beaten career path and ask not how much can I get, but how much can I do without” as they head out into a society where ”the standard for success for too many has become personal greed rather than the community good.”

NJCAA college of the month In this the third year competing in the National Junior College Athletic Association, the College continued to reap the benefits of participation in the NJCAA. A member of Region XIX, Northampton has made a name for itself very quickly in the athletic arena, as each team has advanced at least to its respective regional final four, with softball, women’s basketball and baseball earning national top-10 rankings and men’s bowling finishing 17th at the national tournament. NCC’s entry into the NJCAA coincided with the arrival of Athletic Director Troy Tucker. Tucker oversees a Spartan program that currently sponsors eight sports on the Division III level: baseball, softball, volleyball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s bowling, women’s bowling and men’s soccer. NCC athletes have excelled in the classroom as well, with 31 student-athletes named to the Academic All-Region Team and three earning NJCAA Academic AllAmerican honors. The NJCAA’s academic requirements are tough, according to Tucker. ”Our studentathletes need to complete 12 credits each semester with a minimum grade point average of 2.00. A student could have As in three courses but fail a fourth and be rendered ineligible,” he said. The national exposure that comes with playing in the NJCAA can enable students not only to continue their athletic pursuits, but also to continue their education. This year, Joey Bamford became the first NCC student to sign with a NCAA Division I

program. The secondary education major who recorded a .500 batting average as a center fielder at NCC received a scholarship to play at Monmouth University, fourtime winners of the NCAA Northeast Conference Championship. Northampton athletes are also visible throughout the Lehigh Valley as part of the Spartans in the Community initiative implemented by Tucker. Each student-athlete at Northampton participates in various volunteer/community service activities such as volunteering at the Lehigh Valley Health Network marathon, hosting events for students from The Children’s Home of Easton, working with Special Olympics and participating in the Light the Night Walk for Leukemia. In addition, Northampton hosts the VIA High School All-Star Basketball Classic to help raise money for VIA, a non-profit human service agency that provides services to children and adults with disabilities within the Lehigh Valley community. One of the major infrastructure changes was the addition of an athletic website, with the launch of www.nccspartans.com. NCC’s stand-alone athletic website is recognized as one of the top two-year college athletic websites in the country, providing fans, family, friends and student-athletes with constant updates and information on the Spartans. While still in its infancy as a NJCAA athletic program, Northampton Community College is clearly becoming a fixture on the regional and national radar. ”We are geographically blessed to be located in such a nationally-competitive region,” stated Tucker. ”Our coaches, staff and student-athletes knew going in that they would be competing against the best, and they embraced it … joining the NJCAA was definitely the right move for us.”

diverse viewpoints Diversity issues were the focus of two days of programming, giving students an opportunity to candidly discuss some sensitive topics. Picking up where the fall semester’s ”Courageous Conversations” left off, a March program ”What Does it Mean to be Black?” presented by Assistant Professor of Psychology Gina Turner, challenged students to think about racial stigmas. Pictures of model Lauren Hutton, who looks white but has some black ancestry, singer Mariah Carey, who has both black and white parentage, actress Viola Davis, whose appearance conforms to sub-Saharan African characteristics, suggested the complexity of ideas about race. After discussing how visible traits such as skin color, facial features, hair texture, and even voice and names influence people’s beliefs about each other, the group was asked, ”How easy is it to ignore race?” One student answered, ”It is hard, but we should try. We are really all the same.” Quoting author Eugene Robinson, Turner said that ”It should make just as much sense to group people by any other arbitrary marker, such as blood type or ability to whistle.”

teaching and learning from the ground up This was a groundbreaking year of excitement and rapid progress as NCC’s community garden initiative began. In early April, students, faculty and staff began work on the first phase of the multi-year garden devel­ opment plan. The garden was conceived by faculty and staff to promote experiential learning and community outreach. More than 50 partici­ pants worked together to grow the garden’s mission, layout, timeline, system of governance and funding plan. Classes began meeting at the garden site during spring and summer semesters, according to Kelly Allen, assistant professor of English who is serving as garden coordinator. ”An American history class used it for learning about our country’s agricultural identity, and an Irish literature class studied space and ownership in terms of what the Irish experi­ enced under British rule,” Allen said. Next year’s plans call for steady expansion with the eventual goal of regularly involving much of the NCC community in some aspect of the garden’s diverse teaching and learning potential.

Study Skills events are held each semester to give students an extra boost and help keep them on track to a successful completion.

d’versapalooza puts countries on the map D’Versapalooza engaged all the senses, as students got a taste of varied cultures at the Monroe Campus Community Room on March 10. The yearly event invites students to ”travel” around the world through foods, artifacts and music. To educate and entertain guests, the Kofi and Sankofa Drum and Dance Ensemble played a variety of percussion instruments. The group’s leader, musician and artist Maxwell Kofi Donkor, explained that ”sankofa,” in his native Twi language, of the Asante kingdom in Ghana, means ”going back to the roots.” He engaged the audience in a call-and-response song and talked about his own West African culture and others. Members of student clubs presented food and displays. Ra’idah Annan, a general studies major from Ghana, summed up the flavor of the event: ”D’Versapalooza is a way to get to know many cultures. It is fun and educational at the same time.”

the inaugural northampton community college peace conference Was held in March with presentations on issues of inequality in post-Katrina New Orleans, writing and teaching about peace; personal transformation in working for peace, a screening of the documentary ”Thread” and a Q&A with the director. The conference included a talk by Dr. Golbarg Bashi, a feminist scholar from Rutgers University, who spoke about the role women play in non-violent democratic movements. The conference included panel discussions involving students, faculty, staff and community members. The conference was organized by NCC Professor of Political Science Kiki Anastasakos.

biology professor garners national award In November, Associate Professor of Biology Sharon Lee-Bond was awarded the 2010 Two-Year College Biology Teaching Award by the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT). She was one of two teachers nationwide to receive the award. Lee-Bond serves as an inspirational role model for students. While pursuing a Ph.D. in immunology, she conducted research regarding gene therapy for bladder and skin cancer. Now, as a co-principal investigator in the SMaRT (Science, Math and Related Technologies) Scholars for Success program funded by the National Science Foundation, she mentors academically promising students who are going into STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields. Lee-Bond also encourages her students to get actively involved in service learning opportunities on campus and in the community, and arranges career panels on biology and other STEM subjects. Lee-Bond is the second NCC professor to win NABT’s Two-Year College Biology Teaching Award. Tabery, a professor of biology who is now retired, was likewise honored in 1993.

As a CPA, I’m usually a numbers, bottom-line-oriented kind of person. But I also know that numbers don’t always tell the full story. Certainly that is the case this year for the Foundation. Our revenue growth was modest: we raised slightly more than $2,614,039.36 or just about $300,000 more than was raised in the prior academic year. What’s more impressive than the numbers this year is the momentum we’ve begun to build. A big reason for that revenue growth, for example, is that we are now routinely receiving bequest income; a product of groundwork that was laid years ago as students studied here, had a great experience and have begun to include us in their estate plans. Another reason for the increase is the growth we saw in our second annual Lehigh Valley Food and Wine Festival, under the direction of board members Bob DeSalvio and Mike Molewski, who increased the net revenue generated from the event by more than $55,000, from $118,000 last year to over $175,000 this year. Board member Bill Landis and the golf committee he chairs also continue an impressive run of annually exceeding the prior year’s figures. The momentum generated by the work of our very talented and dedicated Foundation Board, coupled with the tremendous support we receive from this community and from our alumni, routinely places Northampton in the top 25 community colleges in the country in terms of private philanthropic support. And the value of our endowed accounts recently approached $30,000,000, placing us among the top 15 community colleges. While these accomplishments are impressive, what’s more impressive to me is the impact that philanthropy has on the College and its students. This past year, we asked our executive director to review the history of support provided by the Foundation to the College over its lifetime. From 1970 to 2010, the Foundation contributed more than $25,000,000 to the College. As you might expect, the largest amount of support, more than $8,000,000, was in the form of scholarships. But support was provided in other ways as well. Here’s an abbreviated listing: More than $5,794,000 was given in in-kind donations.

Capital facilities and construction costs amounted to more than $5,173,000.

Salaries of College personnel accounted for nearly $1,443,000.

Purchases of capital goods and equipment amounted to almost $1,226,000.

Close to $1,000,000 was given for academic programming.

The library has received over $570,000.

More than $518,000 was directed to faculty development.

At-risk student programming accounted for close to $380,000.

Innovative pilot programs received nearly $292,000.

Greater than $138,000 was transferred for multiple lecture series.

Child care support amounted to more than $100,000.

Landscaping support exceeded $160,000.

International education received more than $69,000.

Some of this support was directed to a specific priority by a donor or group of donors, while other priorities have been identified and supported by the Foundation Board as part of its annual allocation process. In both situations, the impact on the College, its faculty, staff and students has been significant. Students have been supported, buildings have been built, innovative programming funded, faculty development enhanced and the overall academic program improved. That’s a bottom-line result in which we can all take a measure of pride.

NCC’s Alumni Board, 35 Years Strong by James L Johnson ’89

The average college grad knows that alumni associations are the focus for fun. You might make the occasional pledge, attend a fundraising event now and then (also fun, of course) — or, if you make it big in the world of money … but that’s another story, and if you have, your alumni folks are already talking to you. The average Joe/Jane though knows their association as a place to hook up with buddies from classes gone by to kick around memories and maybe make new ones. But, being a member of an alumni association board of directors is another, much greater, thing. People on boards are true believers; the hard core, who understand in their bones how their college degree opened doors for them. They know that there are thousands like them who want the same thing. Being a board member takes the fun of planning good times to a higher level, for a greater good, for the serious business of helping their college meet its goals — which is: helping others open their own doors. One of the best examples of a dedicated board is Northampton’s own Alumni Association, established in 1975. It is one of the oldest continuously active such organizations in the country. Our board heads a membership of over 40,000 alumni. The work they do pays off, and the list of their accomplishments is long. Like most success stories though, it could not have happened without a group of pioneers nailing together a platform on which to build. Today, ”member of NCC’s Alumni Association board” stands out nicely on a Lehigh Valley resume. But it takes time to earn that kind of cred; on the street or in the boardroom. ”Our main goal at first was just survival,” says liberal arts major Jim Williams ’74, the Association’s second president. ”We were so young as a board that having a full complement of members show up for meetings was a challenge at first.” One reason the board was able to build its success was — and is — the qualities Alumni Board Members enjoy NCC’s Alumni Night at Coca Cola Park. they seek in potential members. As noted earlier, they need to feel their commitment, big time. That means being a generous person; not necessarily by writing personal checks, but generous with time and talent. One of the board’s key priorities has always been supporting NCC through philanthropic efforts. Given that the Association raises money primarily through events, not individual pledges, that means work. The Association’s board members not only come up with event ideas but have always been hands-on volunteers as well. Jim Williams remembers ”spending way too much time in a funnel cake trailer at the College’s Family Day Expo [later known as SpringFest].” You can still find members shoulder to shoulder with other alumni, staff and students helping to serve food at a local soup kitchen or taking tickets twice a year at Craft Fair or doing the necessaries at the annual Children’s Holiday Party. Events vary: from an academic stint as a classroom speaker or visiting representative in Harrisburg and D.C. to a Kentucky Derby dinner party, affinity programs, Liztech pin sales or creating, and attending, the annual White House Dinner. Whatever board members do though they do with heart, knowing that all money raised goes back into scholarships, college initiatives and student/alumni programming. The Alumni Association Scholarship Endowment provides scholarships covering tuition and expenses for up to two years. A few more significant items the Associa­ tion has gifted to the College include support for the National Endowment for the Humanities matching grant, for which over $13,000 has been contributed so far, and the naming of Alumni Hall and Alumni Walkway, established in 1992, with a paid pledge of $250,000. While the Hall and its walkway etched with alumni names from early to recent years help to beautify the main campus north of Green Pond Road, it is difficult to top the quiet elegance and natural beauty of the Tribute Garden. The Garden was established by the Foundation on two acres between Penn and Commonwealth Halls as a tribute or memorial for the College family. The plaza the Alumni Association has pledged will add much beauty to the Garden; and it will raise another $200,000. Williams, who also earned a degree from Lehigh University and is now a regional vice president for AXA Equitable, remembers one other thing about those early board members. ”We knew that we wanted to create an organization,” he says, ”that could rival what private colleges and universities had for many years.” That sort of pride of alma mater is what it takes to push a fledgling association forward. After 35 years, that same pride and dedication still resonate within the board. Meet Scott Raab, a licensed funeral director with Connell Funeral Home and an NCC 1992 funeral service grad. Raab joined Northampton’s Alumni Association board of directors in 2007 and was most recently its vice president. His feelings about the College, as well as the board, could wear the quotation marks of his predecessor. ”I find the camaraderie of our board an enticing aspect that makes it worthwhile to be involved,” Raab says. ”I get a wonderful sense that these people are truly bright and caring and receptive to working together to find new ways to meet Northampton’s challenges.” Raab believes what NCC’s board members have always believed: ”that to be involved is to be unselfish with your time; to take pride and take charge and to value the ideals of Northampton.” Those beliefs are particularly important for someone like Raab to embrace; in July, he took on the mantle of president of the Alumni Association. One goal already on the board’s plate as it enters its 36th year is to create a five-year vision statement and strategic plan. ”It’s amazing to think what we have accomplished thus far,” the new president says, ”I can only imagine what we’ll accomplish in the future. That is yet to be discovered and only time will tell.”

tribute garden / 2010-2011 saw the completion of phase 1 of the Tribute Garden at Northampton Community College. Several student groups and clubs, with the assistance of their faculty advisors, have been important aspects of the garden’s progress. This year, we expect to begin phase 2, Alumni Plaza, to be dedicated April 19, 2012.

Turning a Vision into Reality

by Cynthia Tintorri Steve and Mathilda Sheptak don’t just have a vision of a thriving, economically robust Monroe County. The East Stroudsburg couple is dedicating significant time and resources to making it happen. In addition to serving on NCC’s Foundation board, Steve is a working chairperson for the Monroe Campus fundraising campaign. ”I believe in the College’s mission, and the new campus is going to be a tremendous asset and impact in Monroe County,” he says. ”Northampton provides a key piece of the education puzzle that Monroe County did not have.” Steve initially became involved with NCC after marrying Mathilda eight years ago. ”She was involved with the College through work, and friends of ours would ask us to events there. We’ve been supportive all along because we believe in what Northampton is doing,” Steve explains. Mathilda’s longstanding relationship with NCC dates back to the early 1980s, when she drove down to Bethlehem from Monroe County to take job-related classes. She’s excited about the new Monroe Campus and the expanded programs it will offer to Monroe County residents, who won’t have to travel as she did to take advantage of classes now offered only at the Main Campus. The computer lab at the new Monroe Campus will be named for the Sheptaks. The choice to fund computers, in particular, was a natural one — they met because Steve, a former sales and marketing executive with IBM, sold computers to the Pocono Mountains Vacation Bureau where Mathilda worked. ”Our relationship began through technology and computers, so the Monroe Campus computer lab relates to our life connection in that way,” Mathilda says. Steve agrees. ”Both of us realize the value of technology. You just can’t function in today’s business environment without that kind of knowledge, so access to computers and labs is a necessity for any campus.” As executive director for United Way of Monroe County, Mathilda appreciates the opportunities for economic development in Monroe County that an expanded campus will provide. ”NCC is a tremendous resource for education for all kinds of people,” she believes. In addition to traditional students, ”those who have lost their jobs and need to be retrained will benefit, and it’s a resource for businesses that might come into the area and hire new workers.” She also sees the new campus as a quality-of-life benefit for all the people of Monroe County. ”Through both credit and non-credit courses and continuing education, people will be able to pursue their interests. It’s going to provide tremendous advantages for Monroe County residents.” Mathilda is impressed by how much the College cares about the community. ”What we’re about at United Way is the same at NCC — people come first.”

Paying it Forward: Peggy Frey by Paul Acampora

When Peggy Frey graduated from Northampton Community College in May 2010, she knew her relationship with NCC was only just beginning. ”This school changed my life. I’ll never forget that connection,” she says. Frey, a former school bus driver, returned to NCC in her late 40s to study radiography. ”I knew I’d be an older student,” she recalls. ”I was afraid of the professors. I was afraid that I wasn’t going to fit in. But I always wanted to work in the medical field.” Frey grew up in Hawley, Pa., where her father was the local pharmacist. ”For years, I worked with my dad to help him take care of his patients. I knew I could succeed in a caring profession, but I didn’t know how I’d do in the classroom.” As it worked out, Frey was an outstanding student. ”My instructors gave me so much confidence,” she says. ”I’d just hoped that the professors would be nice, but they were so much more than that. Before I knew it, I was on the Dean’s List. And then I was selected to receive the Ronald Taylor Family Scholarship. That award made such a huge impact on me. Even before I graduated, I decided that I would do the same thing for somebody else one day.” In fact, Frey can recall exactly when she decided to create a scholarship at NCC. ”As a student, I was able to spend time with Mrs. Taylor, whose family created my scholarship. She was so kind and so encouraging. She truly inspired me. She made me want to give back. There’s a sense here that if you are able, then please do pay it forward.” Today, Peggy is looking forward to meeting the first recipient of the new Margaret Brown Frey Scholarship for Radiography Students. As a recent graduate herself, Peggy is also enjoying the job she secured as result of her NCC degree. She is a member of the medical staff at Northstar Urgent Care in Nazareth. ”I love my work, and I love the people I work with. I used to be a school bus driver, and now I’m working at my dream job. Sometimes I get choked up thinking about it. I would not be here without my friends and family and Northampton Community College,” she said.
