RETRIBUTION AND RECOVERY German Aircraft and Aviation 1919-1922 Lennart Andersson and Ray Sanger

ROYAL ORCHID – The History of Civil Aviation in Thailand Stephen M Darke with Dr Virachai Vannukul

With the end of the First World War in 1918 and the beginning of punitive reparations, the Inter-Allied Commission of Control began to roam its way far and wide across Europe; its mandate: to seek out and destroy all German aeronautical material and military aviation production facilities. Airfields and factories were surveyed, technical advances made by aeronautical designers and engineers assessed. The Commission’s inspectors targeted every aspect of aviation-related activity - from aircraft and airships to aero engines; instrumentation and wireless equipment through to armament - as part of the Allies’ systematic demilitarisation of Germany. Focussing specifically on the effect that the Armistice terms and the provisions of the Peace Treaty had on the German aviation industry, Retribution and Recovery details for the first time how many of the wartime military aircraft and post war civil designs found their way to other parts of the world, sometimes by surprising means. Hardback A4. 288 pages. 504 images mono throughout. ISBN: 978-0-85130-467-0 Members: £39.95. Non-Members: £59.95

Despite the country’s long and rich aeronautical heritage, Royal Orchid – The History of Civil Aviation in Thailand is the first significant and detailed study of its subject. The development of the various Thai airlines from the days of war-surplus Dakotas, C-54s and Catalinas to the current Boeings and Airbuses is readably documented. Along the way there have been numerous crises – political, environmental, commercial and managerial – which the authors explain. More than 380 photographs, the majority in colour and in print for the first time, provide a vivid impression of the many types, including light aircraft, and their varied colour schemes, that have operated in Thailand since the 1940s. Ample use is made of tables to document route and equipment developments. Historians will particularly value the 76-page complete Thai civil aircraft register. This section benefited from exclusive access to original hand-written records found in the Thai Department of Civil Aviation documents which unfortunately have since been destroyed. A fascinating insight into a neglected yet highly significant topic A4 hardback, 272 pages.

THE GRUMMAN AMPHIBIANS - Goose, Widgeon & Mallard Fred J Knight with Colin R Smith

ISBN: 978-0-85130-439-7 Members: £29.95 Non-members: £42.50

Grumman’s decision to build an amphibian in which wealthy owners could commute from Long Island to New York’s East River was a huge gamble. It would be the company’s largest aircraft and the first for the civilian market. The gamble paid off and the Goose was soon also being bought by military customers around the world. The smaller Widgeon was introduced in 1940, with similar success, and after World War Two the Mallard was hailed as the most graceful amphibian aircraft yet built. This book documents the development of all three types and gives detailed coverage of world-wide military and civilian operators, with full details of all the many modifications and conversions carried out on all three types. 625 monochrome photos, 75 in colour. Other illustrations include drawings, maps, advertisements, brochures, timetables and philatelic items. Appendices cover the detailed history of each of the 721 airframes built, including the French-built SCAN-30 Widgeons. Without doubt, the most comprehensive coverage of these iconic aircraft yet. A4 hardback, 480 pages. REVIEWS Book of the month in the May issue of Aeroplane Monthly. "Air-Britain's latest blockbuster covers types which have not had much publicity and is therefore a useful reference source." Wow! It’s beautiful-Antilles Seaplanes The greatest work ever done on the Grummans – Seaplane Association of America. ISBN 978-0-85130-440-3 Members: £34.95. Non-Members: £49.95

'ON THE WINGS OF A GULL’ Percival and Hunting Aircraft David W.Gearing At last, in the detail for which Air-Britain books are renowned, the full story of Percival and Hunting aircraft from the 1933 to the 1960s. Percival gained fame with its classy and record-breaking pre-war Gull family, flown by Alex Henshaw, Jean Batten and other headline-grabbing pioneers. Then, with war, Percival provided the Proctor, and under licence built the Oxford and Mosquito. Post-war, the growing civil market together with the continuing need for military training and communications aircraft spawned the Prentice, the Prince and Pembroke, the Provost and Jet Provost, and finally (under the BAC banner) the Jet Provost T5 and the Strikemaster. Such an illustrious line-up of types warrants a superlative book – and Air-Britain has achieved it. Illustrated by more than 1,000 photographs, many not published before, 32 pages of them in colour, plus 3-view drawings, this handsome volume also documents the experimental designs and the complex evolution of the company. Full production lists of all Percival and Hunting types, with the comprehensive detail that only Air-Britain can provide, complete this very special book. NEW BOOKS FROM AIR-BRITAIN

FALSE DAWN THE BEAGLE AIRCRAFT STORY Tom Wenham Beagle emerged in the mist of a 1960 October dawn. It was the climax of Peter Masefields dream to overthrow the myth of Britain not being able to sustain a light aircraft industry. The company only lasted ten years – a decade of mis-management, domination of the wrong designs and fearsome boardroom battles, all within a period of a national economic crisis. The British government stepped in to help but ultimately only to steer the company into receivership.

SOPWITH DOVE A SPORTING BIPLANE WITH FIGHTER FOREBEARS Philip Jarrett With the ending of the First World War the Sopwith Aviation Company was quick to produce aeroplanes aimed at the perceived new market for civil aviation. One of its first offerings was the Dove, a sporting two-seat biplane said to be based on the much-loved Pup fighter of 1916 but actually having more in common with the later Snipe.

The story of Beagle, long overdue in the telling, is covered in this definitive history. 464 pages.

The author’s detailed history of this previously poorly-recorded type, of which only a few were built, includes the unique single-seater which Bert Hinkler planned to fly to Australia, the Doves exported to Canada, Australia and Sweden, and the reproduction Dove now to be based with the Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden. A fine set of scale drawings by Mick Davis rounds off this monograph, which is profusely illustrated and features many hitherto unpublished photographs.

TRUCULENT TRIBES. TURBULENT SKIES. THE RAF IN THE NEAR AND MIDDLE EAST 1919-1939 Vic Flintham In 1920 the fledgling Royal Air Force was tasked with enforcing British rule in Mesopotamia, an area roughly corresponding to modern-day Iraq and Kuwait. This tough assignment involved flying in extreme climate – sometimes over perilous terrain - dealing with tribes that were often hostile, and struggling to keep inadequate aircraft and vehicles operational. The RAF succeeded, and it is arguable that its dedication ensured that Britain continued to have an independent air force at a time when defence spending was being savagely cut. This book covers not only Mesopotamia, but the whole of the Middle East, Egypt and East Africa. It includes the RAF’s support for the pioneer long-distance flyers and early airline services. The feature of Vic Flintham’s work we are confident will delight even the best-informed students of RAF history is the photographs. There are more than 560 of them. Hardly any have appeared in print before. Most are of astonishing quality. The types illustrated include the DH.9A, F.2b, Short 184, Snipe, Handley Page O/400, Vimy, Vernon, Victoria, Nighthawk, Wapiti, Fairey IIIF, Rangoon, Southampton, Blenheim, Gordon, Demon, Gladiator, Hind and Wellesley. There are also wonderful images of officers and men at both work and leisure, armoured vehicles, aircraft carriers, and of course the airfields. This visual feast is rounded off by four glorious full-page colour paintings and 22 maps. A4 hardback. 320 pages + index. ISBN: 978-0-85130-468-7 Members £34.95 Non-Members £52.50

OCEAN SENTINEL THE SHORT SUNDERLAND John F Hamlin One of World War II’s iconic aircraft and famed as the flying-boat which defended Britain’s waters and supply routes like no other, the Short Sunderland was modified and developed post-war into a civil airliner serving Empire and trans-ocean routes around the world. From the manufacture of the Sunderland in several different locations, the type development and operational roles, the book moves on to detail the many military units, British and of other nationalities, with which the flying-boat served worldwide. The individual histories of every aircraft are catalogued, including those of Australian, New Zealand, South African, French and Portuguese forces. Civil conversions and the development of the Sandringham, Seaford and Solent variants are also covered. Operators, routes and individual histories are fully described. The Appendices cover a unit/codes/serials index, registration/ serial cross reference and list of civil aircraft names. A Roll of Honour provides a fitting tribute to those who lost their lives in Sunderland operations. Copiously illustrated with almost 400 black and white images, there are also 17 colour photos and 21 colour side views prepared by Peter Coker. BLÉRIOT IN BRITAIN 1899-1927 Ray Sanger To most people, Louis Blériot was simply the Frenchman who was the first person to fly the Channel in a heavier-thanair craft. In fact Blériot¹s connections with Britain stretched over 25 years. For the first time, Ray Sanger tells the full story of Blériot in Britain, covering not only his life and his various enterprises, but even the histories of all the Blériots built or flown here. The distinctive Blériot monoplanes were widely used for training and sports before World War One and then saw extensive war service. Special features include scale plans and photo captions in English and French. A4 hardback. Dustjacket, 192pp including 8 pages of colour photographs (31 images) plus 360 monochrome images including photos, advertising and three-view drawings. ISBN: 978-0-85130-399-4 Special Price: £15.00

RED SEA CARAVAN: THE ADEN AIRWAYS STORY Dacre Watson Formed in 1949, Aden Airways initially flew Dakotas on a network from Cairo in the north to Nairobi in the south. Led by the charismatic Richard de Graaff Hunter, it established a strong presence but was handicapped by old equipment, a situation not relieved until Viscounts arrived in 1963. This intensely evocative book charts all the major Aden Airways events, its people many of whom have contributed memories and images - the Haj flights, carriage of the drug Qat, oil exploration support and finally sabotage on the last day in 1967. Lavishly illustrated with official records, log book extracts, diaries, maps, timetables and memorabilia, this volume captures the spirit of this pioneering airline. A4 hardback. Dustjacket. 264 pages including 48 in full colour. Over 300 black and white & 170 colour images. Aeroplane Monthly ‘Book of the Month’ March 2009 ISBN: 978-0-85130-409-0 Special Price: £15.00

MILES AIRCRAFT - The Wartime Years Production, Research & Development During World War II Peter Amos This second volume continues the story with the trials and tribulations of Miles Aircraft during the Second World War. The stories of the Magister and the Master are completed and for the first time the full range of experimental aircraft prototypes and the vast extent of Miles projected designs and innovative ideas are detailed. This includes the "X" series of transport aircraft and concludes with the first part of the story of the Miles M.52 High Speed Research Aircraft. Prior to Rolls Royce divesting its interest in Phillips and Powis Aircraft in April 1941, F G Miles had concerned himself mainly with technical matters but, with the business back in the hands of the Miles family, F G had to turn his attention to administration, so George Miles took over the duties of Technical Director and Chief Designer. In fact George was responsible for many of the wartime and post-war designs. Covering the large scale production of training aircraft and target-towers this volume also focuses on Miles’ problem with the Ministry of Aircraft Production and its attendant bureaucracy.

MILES AIRCRAFT THE EARLY YEARS The Story of F G Miles and his Aeroplanes 1925-1939 Peter Amos The story of one of the most radical British designers and manufacturers up to World War Two. The distinctive Miles Hawk series of monoplanes was popular amongst private fliers both in the UK and overseas, while the derivative Magister trainer was a key part of the RAF expansion programme. Peter Amos gives the history of Miles from his barnstorming days at Shoreham to the aircraft producing years at Woodley. He provides details of the various firms with which Miles was involved and full development histories of the types and projects designed by him, his wife and his brother George, plus a comprehensive history of each individual aircraft built. GIFTS OF WAR - Presentation Aircraft in Two World Wars Henry Boot and Ray Sturtivant

RAF - FLYING TRAINING & SUPPORT UNITS SINCE 1912 Ray Sturtivant ISO with John Hamlin

In the late summer of 1940, when Britain stood alone against the Nazi onslaught, ordinary people were desperate to play their part in beating the Luftwaffe. The idea of Spitfire Funds was born.

Air-Britain's long out of print Royal Air Force Flying Training and Support Units is generally regarded as an impressive reference source. Now its successor, RAF – Flying Training & Support Units Since 1912, hugely expands and revises its coverage.

Funds sprang up across the country, to be quickly joined by counterparts around the world. Even small communities managed to scrape together £5,000 for a fighter, to have a local name painted on the cowling. Money poured in from all over the world for a variety of aircraft types, until around £14,000,000 had been contributed. For the first time, Gifts of War tells the full story of this immense effort – how and where the money was collected, the full detailed service records of around 1,500 Spitfires and 1,000 other aircraft of 40 types. BRISTOL TYPE 170 FREIGHTER, WAYFARER AND SUPERFREIGHTER Derek A King Described by an early operator as ‘the tramp-ship of the skies’, the Bristol Freighter (as it was usually called) plied the airways for nearly 50 years, usually unremarked but with distinction. Its main claim to fame was that it enabled British holidaymakers to fly their cars to the Continent. But the Bristol Freighter didn’t just fly over the English Channel - it operated on every continent, in widely varying conditions and in several war zones. Derek King not only provides comprehensive detail of all variants, exhaustive operator histories and histories of all 216 Bristol Freighters, and 330 photographs (50 in colour), but also hilarious and hair-raising anecdotes from the people who flew this distinctive type. Michael Zoeller provides 22 superb line drawings. Much of this material has not been published before. 288 pages. Owning this book is the next best thing to having your own Bristol Freighter! The aircraft fall into the following categories: mass production aircraft built in the thousands by major manufacturers such as Beechcraft, Cessna, De Havilland, and Piper; lesser-known but important production and homebuilt aircraft, typically built in reasonable numbers and likely to be seen at the local airfield; and finally, a selection of older aircraft that continue to be flown and cherished. 416 pages with 849 colour and black & white photos £32.50 DOUGLAS C-47 IN SAAF SERVICE Winston Brent The SAAF never operated the DC-3 version only various Marks of the C-47 Dakota versions. THE INVICTA AIRLINES STORY Malcolm Finnis Having described the general aviation scene of the 1950s and 1960s, Malcom Finnis charts the origin of Invicta in 1964 and the inclusive tour years from Manston as Invicta Airways, flying DC-4s, Vikings and Viscounts. The ill-starred merger with British Midland and the formation of Invicta Air Cargo came next. The DC-4s operated in a freight role until the airline re-entered the passenger market as Invicta International Airlines Ltd. The faithful DC-4s were replaced by Vanguards supplemented by a Boeing 720. A wide variety of passenger work was supplemented by freight expansion. Leased Britannias joined the fleet. But this was followed by repossession of all the aircraft, acquisition by European Ferries and their later withdrawal in 1975. A restructured Invicta International resumed an all-freight operation by Britannias for the remaining years until closure in 1982. Each chapter includes details of the aircraft, air and cabin crew, operations month by month. This volume includes many stories and reminiscences that could not have been told 30 years ago. The Invicta Vanguard crash at Basle is covered. Appendices include a history of the 26 aircraft operated and airport details. 312 pages, 122 colour and 83 black and white photographs, 6 line drawings. Reduced price £21.95 (previously £34.95)

THE DOUGLAS B-18 AND B-23 Dan Hagedorn

WRECKS & RELICS 24th edition Ken Ellis

First full history of these WWII aircraft Includes development and operations Full production list Renown author What manner of aircraft pioneered airborne radar and anti-submarine warfare, almost replaced the immortal Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, and yet disappeared from the annals of aviation history with not so much as a footnote in most authoritative histories of the second World War? The elusive Douglas B-18 bomber. The very few stories that have appeared since the end of the war invariably spoke of the aircraft in crude and disparaging term including "The bomber that nobody wanted," but more than 30 surviving crew members who served aboard the aircraft, had no such disparaging words. How could so many people be so wrong? Developed in parallel to the DC-1, the B-18 and it’s obscure development, the handsome B-23 were precisely the right aircraft, at the right time, to help America defeat the serious Axis submarine threat in the Caribbean and train most of the B-17 crews who headed overseas. Serving in every theatre of war, from Iceland, Canada and the U.S. Eastern Seaboard, through the Caribbean and Latin America to the remote Galapagos, Alaska, Hawaii, Java, Australia and the Philippines, the B.18 was lauded by crew members as a superb antisubmarine aircraft. Indeed, some were amongst the first USAAC aircraft to strike back at the invading Japanese forces in the Far East, and others were lost to both aerial and surface combat.
