CLASSROOM SET-UP 

6th grade- 11:38 class 



5th grade- 2:27 class only 



At the beginning of class we will need to set up our tables and chairs. Any volunteers?

We will need to put away tables and reset chairs back into rows. Volunteers to help with tables?

The best way to learn a language is to practice! Speak up! You are all beginners, everyone will make mistakes. Even if you say something wrong the important thing is to try your best!

You are graded on all components of language: reading, writing, speaking, and listening  Homework- assigned 1-2 times per week  Quizzes/Projects-cover minor vocabulary or grammar concepts 2-3 per quarter  Tests- 2 per quarter covers several major concepts from class 

TODAY’S ASSIGNMENTS Name origins:  Name Tag:  Turn to p. 4 in  Choose a French name from the Bon Voyage! name list or workbooks (p.4 or p.11 workbook in small workbook).  Look at the name  Create a name tag with the phrase lists on p.4 and Je m’appelle (French first name, look for each English last name) somewhere on country on the it. maps on p.3  Only 1 person per class can have  Complete the each name exercises on p.5  Keep nametag in your folder and with a partner bring to class!  You will turn *note-this is an old map… Zaïre is now this in at the end of class!! the Democratic Republic of Congo

DEVOIRS (HOMEWORK) 



Use the phonetic spelling of each letter to write the word being spelled. Optional: look up what each word means

COGNATES 



Words that look and sound the same in English and French and have the same meaning. Examples: animal=animal  sports=sports 





Faux amis-Words that look and sound the same in English and French but have a different meaning. Examples: crayon =pencil in French  robe=dress in French 

Sometimes these words are spelled a little differently but have the same meaning

centre=center, théâtre=theater

VOLUNTEERS TO RECITE ALPHABET?? 

Each person will come up and say their alphabet to me either today or the next class (if we run out of time).

While people are coming up to recite their alphabet you can QUIETLY practice at your seat or begin working on the cognates worksheet at your table.  If you finish early work on the cognates exercises on p.8-9 in the Discovering Languages workbook 
