TEACHING AND RELATED EXPERIENCE December 2013- ongoing Chair of the Geography Department, Vancouver Island University. Duties include developing meeting agendas, minutes, chairing meetings, handling faculty and student concerns, articulation issues. Managing workload/ timetabling, planning and liaison with other parts of the university and interested bodies off campus. July 2000 to July 2004 Adjunct professor, School of Resource and Environmental Management (REM), Simon Fraser University. Served on the committees of three graduate students at SFU and UBC whose research focused on urban watershed planning, stream protection/ habitat enhancement, and communicative action and urban sustainability. Was also the supervisor for an undergraduate thesis in geography on urban parks and open space policy. Taught three SFU geography courses: GEOG 241: Social Geography; GEOG 362: The Geography of Urban Development, and GEOG 383: Regional Development and Planning I. In Spring 2004, I taught REM 100: Global Change, a foundation course for the environmental and resource stream within Human Geography. In fall 2003, I co-taught DIAL 390, 391, 392: The Urban Experience in SFU’s Undergraduate Semester in Dialogue, and subsequently guest lectured in the next offering of the course. I was asked to co-teach the course in the fall of 2004, but turned it down in favour of accepting a fulltime job at Malaspina/ VIU. January 2002 to December 2002 Instructor, Langara College. Developed and taught APPL 1130: Planning Techniques, part of the Applied Urban and Rural Planning Diploma program. January 2000 to April 2001 Instructor, URB 601: Urban Issues and Solutions, a pilot course for SFU’s Master’s Program in Urban Studies. [Note: I was also scheduled to teach URB 630: Urban Development, Planning and Policy in Fall 2003, but the course was cancelled because of insufficient enrollment.] July 1995 to June 2000 Assistant professor (limited term), School of Resource and Environmental Management, SFU. RESEARCH EXPERIENCE 2002 to present Have nearly completed a book manuscript, Place: Reweaving the Fabric of Human Experience, for UBC Press. Completed a book-length research report with Dr. Ray Tomalty entitled Smart Growth in Canada: Implementation of a Planning Concept, as a result of a $25,000 External Research Grant from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. Also worked with Ray Tomalty and Mark Anielski on a sustainability report card on 27 municipalities for the Pembina Institute entitled The Ontario Urban Sustainability Report 2007: Measuring the Environmental, Social and Economic Sustainability of Ontario’s Municipalities. I am also working on issues related to model sustainable communities, the EcoDensity campaign in Vancouver, and citizen campaigns to protect the Oak Ridges Moraine in Ontario. Completed a research project on the evolution of the Delamont neighbourhood in Kitsilano (Vancouver) and its relationship to the perceived quality of life experienced by residents. The results were presented at the International Association for People-Environment Studies-Culture and Space in the Built Environment Network: Social Change and Spatial Transformation in Housing Environments session in Istanbul, Turkey (a session of the 2005 International Union of Architects’ World Congress). Supervised the production of a report on the needs of municipalities vis-à-vis implementation of sustainability best practices for the New City Institute, “Sustainability Action: Local Market Needs and Business Opportunities.” Project manager and lead author, International Centre for Sustainable Cities, in developing a research paper on The Capable City for the 2006 World Urban Forum. Project manager and lead author for the BC Sprawl Report 2004 that focused on the links between smart growth, livability, and economic vitality. Co-authored an analysis of the smart growth movement in Canada for Smart Growth BC, in preparation for the creation of a nation-wide smart growth network. Researched and designed an on-line guidebook for a False Creek Heritage Trail using funds provided by the BC Heritage Trust.

5 1999 to 2001 Project manager of a consultant team and lead author of a report for Smart Growth BC, The BC Sprawl Report 2001. Wrote a case study report on the integration of environmental considerations into land use planning in Southeast False Creek, Vancouver, for the Assessment and Planning Project, a collection of BC and Ontario case studies produced under the direction of Dr. Robert Gibson at the University of Waterloo and funded by SSHRC. Developed a proposal for the accreditation of a stream of courses in SFU’s School of Resource and Environmental Management as a planning degree. 1997 to 1998 Coordinated the design and execution of a survey of environmental and resource management employers to determine the potential employability of graduates of a proposed Bachelor of Resource and Environmental Management program at SFU. Analyzed the resulting data along with other materials in a report submitted to the School of Resource and Environmental Management. Was part of a consultant team (Peck and Associates) for a Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation report titled On the Ground: Overcoming Barriers to Sustainable Real Estate Development in Canada. Was awarded a grant from SFU’s Institute for the Humanities to evaluate the development of design guidelines for heritage zoning in Vancouver’s South Shaughnessy neighbourhood. The resulting monograph, “Learning from Shaughnessy: The Role of Design Guidelines in Adjudicating Community Conflicts,” published by the New City Institute. 1995 to 1996 Was awarded a VanCity Credit Union Community Partnership Grant to produce case study reports on heritage and housing issues in Victory Square, on the proposed redevelopment of Southeast False Creek, and on transportation management for Vancouver's downtown core. The three reports were distributed to community groups and city councillors and have been used in courses in SFU's School of Resource and Environmental Management. 1993 to 1994 Produced a short report for future Vancouver mayor, Sam Sullivan, on the utility of different sustainable city concepts. Researcher-writer on contract with the Intergovernmental Committee on Urban and Regional Research (ICURR). Prepared a report, Ecosystem Planning for Canadian Urban Regions, with Robert Gibson, Ray Tomalty, and John Fisher.

6 Researcher-writer on contract with the Institute of Urban Studies, University of Winnipeg. Prepared a monograph with Ray Tomalty on policies for sustainable urban development. 1992 Consultant, VanCity Savings Credit Union. Researched and wrote a report evaluating VanCity's environmental leadership role and internal staff education programs and offering recommendations for further action. 1987 to 1991 Submitted a report for the Ontario Nuclear Safety Review on the impact of a possible largescale nuclear facility accident on the communities in the vicinity of the Darlington and Pickering power plants. Conducted research for a group concerned with the impact of landfills in the Bowmanville area of Ontario.

OTHER ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE January 2002 to present Organized a workshop on March 20th, 2013 on community mapping for the VIU community and residents of Nanaimo, entitled ‘Taking Back the Representation of Our Communities,” which featured Ken Josephson and Maeve Lydon of the University of Victoria Mapping Collaboratory. Former co-chair of the Smart Growth Canada Network; past President of Local Solutions, and Research Director for the New City Institute. Currently board member of the Save Linley Valley West Society, and long-time member of the Education Committee of the Planning Institute of B.C. Initiator and co-organizer of the annual Urban Issues Film Festivals and Don Stone Annual Lectures on Urban Planning and Design to help commemorate International Town Planning Day, and of two lectures/ film presentations for global studies. Judge for the “All Aboard the Arbutus Corridor” Design Contest for a disused rail corridor, Vancouver – organized by the Society for Promoting Environmental Conservation. Award ceremony held March 18th, 2005. Presented on the topic of “Searching for the Green in Greenfield Development” at the Urban Research Dialogue, A Conversation Among Planners and Urban Design Schools: From Theory to Practice symposium sponsored by CMHC, 15 October 2004. Served as coordinator for the Smart Growth Canada Network and was responsible for organizing its second national conference in Ottawa, 4 February 2004. Member of the Advisory Committee for “Public Deliberation in an Adversarial World: A Forum with John Forester,” Morris J. Wosk Centre, Vancouver, 27 November 2003. Participated in the land use team of the Cities Plus process, in which the Greater Vancouver Regional District, the Sheltair Group, and others formulated a hundred-year sustainable regional

7 land use plan for Metro Vancouver, as Canada’s entry in an international competition for best long-range plan for a metropolitan region. Contributed to associated design charrette. Co-authored a livability study for The Hudson residential redevelopment project in downtown Vancouver. Facilitated the Tri-Cities Community Solutions Forum, Coquitlam, which involved over one hundred participants in addressing social sustainability and community development issues. September 2001 to June 2002 Guest editor of issue of Alternatives Journal, “Saving Place” (28.3).
