CHSS Marketing Initiatives The Committee is invited to note the contents of this paper. Lynn Hyams March 2012

CHSS Marketing Initiatives In May 2011, the College appointed three Marketing Officers and a new Press Officer, the intention being to professionalise considerably the recruitment and programme development work done within the College; to significantly enhance press coverage, and to ensure that we are using all the effective routes available and possible to raise the profile of the College, spread information about the value of our research, assist with recruitment and assist with the conversion and induction of all our new students. A College Marketing Forum was created to enable these new staff to link with all the marketing, press, web, alumni and other academic and support staff in the Schools and in the College Office. Membership of the Forum has been informal and flexible, with additional people coming to meetings as appropriate depending on the topic of the forum. Its core members are all who indicated interest at the start last summer – see list appended. Members often draw meetings to the attention of colleagues in their schools. Meetings are not otherwise advertised (at present). The Press and Marketing staff are each responsible for 3 or 4 Schools and are the key links for those Schools in trying to assist them to define their press and marketing strategies. The links are as follows: School Eca Divinity Business Economics LLC HCA PPLS SPS Law Health

The Marketing Forum was created in June 2011 in order to draw together those in the College with interest in marketing work (defined in its wider sense). There have been 6 meetings, and the focus of these meetings has been as follows:  24 June 2011: Marketing – presentations from the 3 new Marketing Officers on the kind of marketing research support they can give schools to evaluate markets, assess the potential for introducing a new degree/revised focus of a degree, how they would recommend Schools use the marketing reports they produce.  6 September 2011 – Virtual Communications: The Wimba Virtual Open Days in Physics; Using Facebook as a tool for conversion; Social media, Twitter, Linkedin etc; Using YouTube for mounting films on the web.  6 October 2011 - What makes a good press story? How the Press and Public Relations office works and can help you.  22 November 2011 – Alumni Relations – what do alumni want; keeping in touch; alumni advice on recruiting PG students and assistance at recruitment fairs. Keeping in touch – note of new activities in PPLS  24 January 2012 – ‘Conversion’ of students – a marketing approach to applicant conversion; the impact of newsletters, reintroduction of the Post Offer Visit Days; SRA’s conversion work.

 21 February 2012 – Knowledge Exchange: Linking KE, PR and External Engagement for Mutual Benefit (with a case study from the School of Law) The 3 Marketing and 3 Press staff all work as a flexible and cooperative team, and work closely with the College’s Web Team; C&M staff and School staff. Each is a lead contact for a group of Schools, and some Schools are now working very actively and constructively with them to identify their marketing their marketing needs, priorities and strategy, and to feed in news stories. The Press and Marketing staff ‘hot desk’ in some Schools, and visit others regularly. Their home base is the C&M Office in Forrest Hill; they receive professional line management and guidance from C&M staff. Janet Rennie 14 March 2012
