Welcome

to the 2015 Pacific University

Commencement Ceremony! Today is a celebration.

It is a celebration of all that our students have accomplished through the long and challenging journey for their degrees. It is a celebration of the friends, family, professors and staff members who have encouraged our students along their way. It is a celebration of the essence of education itself. Steeped in tradition, the graduation ceremony represents all the people who have come before us during Pacific’s long history and all those who will follow. Mostly, though, today is a celebration of you, our graduates. We are so proud of you. It is my sincere hope that you will remember the excitement of discovery, the challenge of tackling a difficult project, and the thrill of achieving your goals. You deserve today’s celebration. You have earned not only your degree, but also the myriad lessons and achievements along the way. These are accomplishments no one can take away from you. We hope that you will move forward on a life-long process of growth, that you will nurture and sustain a love of learning, and that you will pass the excitement and the opportunity of education on to others whenever possible. Congratulations from the entire Pacific University family! Warmest Regards,

Lesley M. Hallick, PhD President

THE SIGNIFIC ANCE OF

Academic Regalia

ACADEMIC PROCESSION

The academic procession has its antecedents in medieval Oxford University. The procession is designed so that each graduating senior passes before each faculty member one final time before the conferring of the degrees. The colorful nature of the procession comes from academic hoods worn by the faculty. The rules for academic dress have evolved during the years from the 12th century, when communities of learners, or universities, everyday dress consisted of a long gown or robe often covered by a full-length cloak with a cowl, the forerunner of today’s hood.

GONFALONS

The gonfalon, a flag that hangs from a crosspiece or frame, originated in the medieval republics of Italy as an ensign of state or office. Gonfalons have been adopted in many universities around the world as college or institutional insignias. The colors of each gonfalon coordinate with the hood color of the discipline.

THE ACADEMIC MACE

The academic mace symbolizes the authority vested in the president by the Board of Trustees. It serves as a symbol of the highest ideals of humankind and exhibits the main characteristics of their most ancient relative; the medieval battle-mace or war club. The university’s mace was commissioned by President Emeritus Phillip D. Creighton to commemorate his investiture in 2003 and was crafted from white oak. It is now a treasured university artifact and is incorporated in the official academic ceremonies of commencement, convocation and presidential investitures.

THE PRESIDENTIAL CHAIN OF OFFICE

The Presidential Chain of Office is worn by the president on official university occasions and is symbolic of the authority vested in the president by the Board of Trustees. The medallion features the official seal on one side and a depiction of Old College Hall – the university’s first building constructed in 1850 – on the other side.

12

WEARING ACADEMIC REGALIA is a custom with

origins in the medieval European universities, where it was required as daily wear to serve as a reminder of a person’s role in the academic community. Most American colleges and universities have since adopted the cap, gown and hood to wear exclusively at particular ceremonies, such as Commencement. Since 1865, colleges and universities in the United States have followed a uniform code that specifies the correct type of regalia for each degree. Masters and doctors wear a hood lined with colors of the degree-granting institution, or lined with a color of an institution represented by the wearer. The hoods are trimmed in velvet with a color distinctive of the degree. Hoods of gowns at Pacific University are lined in black, with scarlet chevrons. Below is a listing of degrees and their typical colors. Arts, Letter and Humanities White Business Administration Drab Economics Copper Education

TO THE CLASS OF 2015 FROM THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

Since 1864, the Pacific University Alumni Association has been a source of support for graduates as they depart the university and begin their lives as alumni. We hope you will not see this as the end, but rather the beginning of your relationship with Pacific University. The best benefit you are offered as a member of the Alumni Association is a lifetime of connections to those who have impacted you during your time here. Those connections should never diminish, and you will always have a place on each of Pacific University’s campuses. We hope you will return as frequently as you are able to visit these hallowed halls and reminisce about your years of study. You have achieved a tremendous milestone and we, the Alumni Association of Pacific University, are proud to count you among us. The Office of Alumni Relations is based out of the Abbott Alumni Center on the Forest Grove Campus. For more information about events and benefits or to request help contacting a classmate, please contact the Office of Alumni Relations at [email protected] or 503-352-2057. Again, congratulations and stay in touch.
