President’s Report Our Annual General Meeting is here - April 16; so come for lunch at 11:45 a.m. with the meeting to follow and then the elections. We will try to run everything as quickly as possible. Leaving the Board of Directors will be Gerry Yakimenko, Gertie Collins and Betty Clarke. I want to thank them for their time on the Board and hope to see them back on the Board real soon. I will still be around as Past President. There will be four new members elected at the AGM and I hope they enjoy their time on the Board. I want to thank the Board for being so cooperative and for working so hard for our members. I would also like to thank everyone for all their hard work this past year. Cordella

From the Executive Director Easter!! This year is slipping past very quickly and I still have so much to do! There are no dull moments with this job. This month we have our Annual General Meeting with a few new board members. Please ensure you check out the nominees’ resumes, which are posted in the centre and join us for voting day on April 16th. In March we had a new activity start here. A group of people are now playing Canasta on Tuesday afternoons in the games room. If you are interested please drop in at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesdays to have a great time with this group! Next month is our garage sale, so if you have items you wish to get rid of please bring them into the centre now. To help our volunteers out, please ensure items are clean and in good running condition. The work that goes into this event is overwhelming and I would like to see that our volunteers are not overworked. If you can help out please contact us here at the office and we will connect you with Allison Crowder who is

We could also use some more donations of gently used clothing for “My Other Closet”, our clothing boutique. We have had a number of inquiries into what constitutes a “Lifetime Membership”. You must be 80 years of age and have been a member with Greater Forest Lawn 55+ for 15 consecutive years. This was changed in our 2013 bylaws. May 8th is our Volunteer Appreciation Lunch. We plan to start this event at 11:00 a.m. Tickets will be available as of April 14th for $2.00/person. There will be no Jam Session for the months of July and August. Attendance is extremely low for the summer months and our volunteers need a rest. Another inquiry that was been made is: “What is our lunch program?” The lunch program is our Wednesday Lunch. We CANNOT have people going into the kitchen before, during or after meals are served. This applies to everyone! Only dishwashers and cooks should be in the kitchen as required. If you wish to purchase food please wait until Rebecca is able to help you. If food is for sale

From the Executive Director (Continued) Rebecca will let someone know to announce that it is available. If food is going to be used for another purpose, it will NOT be for sale. Some of the extras will be put out for people to have if they are still hungry. People should not be in the kitchen due to health and safety concerns. If the door is locked then you will have to ask one of the cooks for help. Taking food without permission from Rebecca is inappropriate. If you want boiled water for tea you must ask someone in the kitchen to put it on for you and bring it to you. Jeannette

Rebecca is looking for some ideas for desserts. If you would like to share an idea with the group, please come and see them. Recognition will be given and, who knows, your recipe may be shared in the newsletter.

“Name Our Boomer Dance” Okay so we are in the process of working on starting a dance once a month hopefully to start by fall. What we would like to do is have different eras of music and have theme nights to include things like music from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. We will have a disco night, a line dance night, a two-step night, surfer music, perhaps a karaoke night and so on. While we are trying to focus on bringing in younger older adults, we welcome all to come. We have much work to do to get this off the ground and welcome any ideas that you may have with regards to this project. With that said we want to come up with a catchy name to advertise when we are ready. If you have any ideas please bring them into the office. A prize will be awarded for the best name entered. We are trying to come up with a name that does not include the word boomer. Jeannette

Program Coordinator’s Report Woot! Woot! Spring is here!! I love this time of year! The days have gotten longer, the grass can be seen from under the deep freeze, I have seen bugs, birds and yes, skunks. March was a very successful and fun month. The trip to Cowboys Casino was thoroughly enjoyed, no big winners to report, our Tablet class was instantly full, with people on the waiting list for the next session and our PJ Day was full of fun and laughs. The Mow Open House & Registration ran with great success, registering over 35 clients for the season. If you could not make it to the Open House to register for the cutting season, you can still register, please call to book an appointment.

Monday, April 14, 2014 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. $3.00 for popcorn and something to drink. We will be watching the action thriller called ‘Unstoppable,’ starring, Chris Pine and Denzel Washington. The story was inspired by actual events. When a rookie train operator Will (Chris Pine) and grizzled veteran engineer Frank (Denzel Washington) learn that a runaway locomotive carrying carloads of dangerous chemicals is headed for Will's small Pennsylvania hometown, where his wife and child live. In order to save the day, they must figure out how to catch up to the rogue engine, and stop it before harm comes to the town. Standing in their way is Galvin, the head of the company who is more interested in saving the stock price than lives. On the plus side, the duo have competent corporate employee Connie on the radio, talking them through their various attempts to corral and then stop the potentially lethal locomotive. Programs

Lunch Time Fun!! April 9, 2014 we will be having a celebration Easter lunch. We challenge you to decorate an Easter basket &/or put on your bunny ears and tail! Prizes will be awarded.

Some of Life’s Puzzlements Why do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke? Why do banks leave vault doors open and then chain the pens to the counters? Why do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in our driveways and put our useless junk in the garage?

Do You Go to Church?

MILITARY WHIST NIGHT

A friend was in front of me coming out of church one day, and the preacher was standing at the door as he always is to shake hands. He grabbed my friend by the hand and pulled him aside.

FRIDAY April 11, 2014 Time: 7:00 p.m. FEE: $3.00

The Pastor said to him, "You need to join the Army of the Lord!"

Whist- Is a card game of mingled skill and chance. Join the fun, but please be aware that you should have a team of (4) people.

My friend replied, "I'm already in the Army of the Lord, Pastor." Pastor questioned, "How come I don't see you except at Christmas and Easter?"

GREATER FOREST LAWN 55+ SOCIETY th 3425-26 Avenue S.E. Calgary, AB. 403-272-4661

He whispered back, "I'm in the secret service.
