ACT I

Elements of Drama

Elements of Drama PLOT – the story or the action (includes rising action, turning point, falling action)

THEME – the story’s message, meaning, moral or lesson

Elements of Drama SUSPENSE – the conflict (also called the problem or tension)

LANGUAGE – the script (especially the lines spoken by the characters in dialogue)

Elements of Drama EMPATHY –relating to what a character

is feeling or experiencing

MOTIVATION – reasons why a character behaves in a particular way

DISCOVERY – revelation that helps audience understand a character or story

ACT II

Elements of Production

Elements of Production STAGING –how the actors move onstage (also called blocking)

SCENERY – the set or physical environment in which the action takes place

PROPS – an object used in a play

Elements of Production LIGHTING – used in varying degrees of intensity to indicate mood and create illusion

SOUND – used for transitions or to sugest something about the environment or action

Elements of Production COSTUMES – clothes (and accessories) actors wear to convey characterizations

MAKEUP – substances applied to face and body to create the illusion of character

ACT III

Elements of Performance

Elements of Performance BREATH CONTROL – maintaining appropriate level & rhythm of respiration so as not to unexpectedly hypo- or hyper-ventilate

DICTION – speaking clearly

Elements of Performance BODY ALIGNMENT – creating a posture or physicality that helps to portray characterization

ISOLATION OF BODY PARTS – maintaining control of separate parts of the body individually yet simultaneously
