ANNUAL REPORT 2012 Listening is at the heart of who we are and what we do. We sit with our elders, hearing
their stories and learning a life lesson or a new joke. Or as we’re delivering food bags, we’ll pause to take in the joy of the moment. We’re often leaning in to pay closer attention to a wheelchair-bound elder in a nursing home or to a delighted guest at one of our parties. We put listening at the center of our skill set, enabling us to make better friendships, end the sadness of isolation and cement treasured connections to the seniors we serve every day. The great thing about listening is that it’s also an excellent tool in our day-to-day work. In fact, at Little Brothers, we have a long history and tradition of engaging our stakeholders in dialogue and decision-making on an array of issues that impact this organization. Last spring, for instance, we reached out to elders, donors, volunteers and staff members to help us create a new way to celebrate springtime with our elders. Our problem: We’ve increasingly been forced to limit the number of elders invited to Easter parties due to the lack of available host facilities on that holiday. Moreover, getting to and from locations and enjoying the Easter party often meant that our elders had to choose between church and Little Brothers on that special Sunday. Instead, we took the problem to our community and, true to form, our stakeholders weighed in with valuable ideas and opinions. And we listened.

Levi loves to read CQ Ham Radio magazine, enjoys telling stories and attending Little Brothers’ parties. Renee is an active volunteer who helps out at Little Brothers’ events and supports fundraisers hosted by our Young Professionals Advisory Board.
The result is the Fête d’Armand Marquiset, our new annual spring celebration. In addition to allowing us to welcome more elders to three different locations on Saturday, April 20, this new event also helps us pay our respects to the founder of Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly, Armand Marquiset, and to honor our legacy.
Hearing New Answers Importantly, because we listened for new ways to solve a problem, we also heard something very special from one elder who spoke for many: “I love celebrating all the holidays with Little Brothers, so I’m so glad that I don’t have to choose between going to church on Easter Sunday and attending the Little Brothers’ party. I can do both!” What we certainly didn’t give up doing on Easter Sunday is our longtime custom of delivering meals to homebound seniors and visiting with elders in nursing homes. This is a tradition we pledge to honor year after year.
Listening is at the center of our skill set, enabling us to make better friendships, end the sadness of isolation and cement treasured connections with the elders we serve every day. Listening has also been crucial to driving our strategic planning to take us into the future and onto new frontiers. This work is front and center on the agenda of our Board of Directors working in partnership with our leadership and staff. As we conclude the final year of our strategic plan, Vision 2013, we’ve initiated a process to solicit opinions from elders, donors, volunteers, board members, community partners and the staff. Some of these groups participated in structured listening meetings, while others responded to online or

Board of Directors mailed surveys. The information we’ve gathered will help us identify and prioritize key issues. We’ll also complete a traditional SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis. Then, we’ll select three to five issues that we all will focus on over the next three years to advance our mission and serve our elders even more effectively. Even as we design our new strategic plan, we remain committed to two vital objectives: building awareness about the problems facing our aging population and promoting advocacy to gain more support to end the isolation and loneliness of our elderly, and address other social and economic issues that impact their quality of life.

2012 IN REVIEW LITTLE BROTHERS – FRIENDS OF THE ELDERLY served 1,349 Chicago elders in FY2012. • Average age of our elders is 82. More than one-third use a walker or wheelchair. • 79% are women and 21% are men • Our elders represent the ethnic diversity of Chicago: African American (45%); Caucasian (34%); Hispanic (20%); and Asian or other races (less than 2%).
We promise to remain alongside our elders for the duration of their lives, providing them with friendship, celebrations, joy and beauty. We could not achieve our goals of relieving loneliness and isolation among elders without the time, talent and financial support of our donors and volunteers. VOLUNTEERING In FY2012, 1,509 volunteers made a positive impact on our elders through visits, serving at parties, driving and helping out wherever needed, contributing 42,343 hours of service. We welcomed 773 new volunteers last year; 563 were individuals who collectively volunteered as part of a group.
VISITING Volunteers and staff enhance the quality of life for our elders through visits, phone calls and outings. Reassurance and friendship was provided through 14,631 personal contacts with elders. GIVING Our ability to forge lifelong connections with isolated elders is supported by generous donations from thousands of individuals and dozens of corporations and foundations. Little Brothers received $4,179,970 in contributed support in FY2012.
Easy to Connect—and Care Why did you decide to be a visiting volunteer? Lisa: “A friend of mine introduced me to Little Brothers. I kept thinking about it. I finally got to a stage in my life and really wanted to volunteer and be connected with one elder to build a relationship. I got matched with John in January 2011.” What does the volunteer experience mean to you? “It’s a chance to have a different friendship and care for someone older. My grandparents are gone so it’s rewarding for me to visit with John, hear his stories—

and have someone who really appreciates my presence. It’s like chatting with any friend. We laugh a lot.” What do your visits mean to John? “He enjoys the interaction and having someone look out for him. We talk either in person or on the phone at least twice a month.” How do you fit volunteer visiting into your busy life? “John makes it easy. He’ll say just stop by. Don’t worry about a big plan. I realized it was something I can and want to do. I work for a

Nearly all of our elders received personalized gifts during the Christmas season, purchased by generous donors. SUMMER PROGRAMS Nearly 400 elders participated in our summer programs: 133 elders enjoyed vacations at Illinois State Beach Resort. Another 202 elders joined staff interns and volunteers for our Summer in the City program, and about 50 homebound elders had at-home experiences. CELEBRATIONS OF LIFE Throughout the year elders celebrated at our Ashland facility, attending birthday parties, family reunions with other elders and special parties at Halloween, Fourth of July, St. Patrick’s Day and more. The Lloyd Walding Brain Fitness Center, Movie Club, Creative Café and Herrera Family Café brought elders together to enjoy activities. SPECIAL ASSISTANCE Lack of transportation, challenges with household tasks or limited access to healthy food can threaten our elders’ independence. On 536 separate occasions in FY2012, Little Brothers’ staff and program assistants provided transportation or offered other direct services to enable our elders to remain as selfsufficient as possible. In addition, Little Brothers packed and delivered 1,158 customized food bags to help nourish 114 elders. ELDERS GIVING BACK Many of our elders are civic-minded and enjoy giving back to the community. A Great Feeling in Your Heart Why did you want to be a visiting volunteer? Rick: “I have worked with children with life-threatening diseases. I felt in my heart that it was time to help the elderly in the same fashion. I did research on the Web about visiting lonely elders and found Little Brothers. The process was easy and I was assigned an elder within a month.” What do your visits mean to Maria—and to you? “Maria is an immigrant from El Salvador who came here in 1966—the year I was born! She lives alone on the Southwest Side and has a very kind and caring spirit. She loves to talk about her week and tell me about her past. I was told that when Maria joined the program, she was very lonely and depressed. She has since gained her spirit back and is very thankful for

Elders also gathered to make toiletry bags for the homeless at St. James Catholic Church. Through our continuing partnership with Esperanza School, elder volunteers meet monthly with students who have developmental disabilities to share experiences and learn from each other.
Volunteer Rick Gutierrez says visiting Maria “makes a difference in her life and lets me know someone with a great history.”
Little Brothers. I feel joy when I visit her knowing that I make a difference in her life.” How do you fit volunteer visiting into your busy life? “I work at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois in information technology. I have a daughter and my two grandchildren live with me. I also serve on various nonprofit boards and do other volunteering. I feel that when you find it in your heart to do something, you do it. It’s just two hours every two weeks. And you will have a great feeling in your heart when you help someone in need.”
LASTING SUPPORT We not only have the honor of celebrating life with our elders, but also commemorating them in death. Staff and volunteers attend services, send flowers and often make final arrangements to ensure last wishes have been met. This past year, with your help, we accompanied 77 elders to the end of their lives.

Hosting Favorite Holidays
Starting New Traditions “It’s nice somebody takes an interest in us,” says Evelyn, an elder who attended a recent Little Brothers’ luncheon for St. Patrick’s Day—and the fourth time she’s joined in on our holiday revelry. “I’ve really enjoyed the affairs that I’ve been to,” she says. Little Brothers kicked off 2013 with celebratory luncheons for Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day. Elders and volunteers enjoyed delicious food and theme decorations from red hearts to green shamrocks. Valentine entertainment featured the music of romantic strings while an Irish musical duo charmed the guests in March. “Little Brothers is a nice organization,” says Jamila, an elder who also attended the St. Patrick’s Day party. “It’s good to be with other people.” Spring launched a new holiday tradition with the first Fête d’Armand Marquiset held on April 20 at three locations around the city: De LaSalle High School, St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church and at Little Brothers on Ashland Avenue. This newly themed event and date replaced Easter Sunday parties in order to take advantage of larger facilities. More than 300 elders, along with volunteers and staff, participated. The Fête also honored Armand Marquiset who founded “Little Brothers of the Poor” in France in 1946. For a closer look at the new Fête d’Armand Marquiset, visit our website for photos that capture all the fun.
Audrey’s House: Moving
Closer to Acquiring Our New Facility
Audrey’s House, named in honor of the late Audrey Chesner, will be an exciting destination for summer vacations and year-round activities for our elders, volunteers, staff and Board, as well as the surrounding community. Little Brothers continues the process of acquiring this exceptional second location, which is located in Kane County, just 40 miles from Chicago. “We are working closely with the community, county officials and others to complete all the steps necessary to acquire the property and ensure that this facility is
fully ready to be safe, sound and comfortable for our elders and others, beginning in 2014,” explains Simone Mitchell-Peterson, chief executive officer. Little Brothers also looks forward to launching a $500,000 special matching gift campaign later this year to raise additional funds to furnish and equip Audrey’s House. Namesake Audrey Chesner left a generous gift that provides substantial funds for the purchase of the property. To learn more about Audrey and her house, see our website or call Cecilia Straney at 312.604.7232.

Summer 2013 for Elders
Visiting Vets with Heartfelt Valentines
Continuing their unique intergenerational partnership, Little Brothers’ elders and the students at Esperanza School in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood celebrated Valentine’s Day by sharing their love with veterans at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center. The group of eight elders and eight students, ages 13 to 21, designed and created 60 Valentine cards at one of their monthly meetings. The group then personally delivered their cards, along with 100 additional cards to be distributed at the hospital, while meeting and talking with 160 veterans. “It was very interesting to see all the veterans,” says Irene, age 90, who has been involved since 2010 with the Esperanza students, all of whom have developmental disabilities. The veterans, who are being treated for various medical problems, “were all very nice,” Irene reports. This was Irene’s first visit to a VA hospital. Making and delivering the cards was a great way for the elders and students to spend time together and brighten the day for the veterans. Since fall 2010, the Little Brothers’ program with the Esperanza School has matched students with elders who meet monthly

From Resort to In-Home during the school year. Their relationships deepen over the year as the students and elders share experiences and learn from each other. “I enjoy talking with the children and answering their questions. I ask them questions and learn things, too,” says Irene. The students and elders have gone on other outings and completed various service projects such as making toiletry kits for elders in nursing homes and decorating pillowcases for soldiers in Afghanistan. “It’s an opportunity to feel good by helping someone else,” explains Christine Bertrand, Intergenerational Program Coordinator. The Intergenerational Programs at Little Brothers bring elders together with people of all ages. The goal, says Bertrand, is to “bring all generations together: young, old and everyone in between.” To learn more about or get involved in our Intergenerational Programs, please contact Christine Bertrand at 312.455.1000 or cbertrand@ littlebrotherschicago.org; or visit www.littlebrotherschicago.org.
Little Brothers will host a variety of Summer Programs this year to meet the needs and raise the spirits of hundreds of our elders. Here’s a sample of what’s scheduled. Learn more about volunteering and supporting our Summer Programs at www.littlebrotherschicago.org. Four-day Getaways Little Brothers will offer eight weeks of four-day getaways to Illinois Beach Resort. Each week 15 elders will be joined by volunteers to enjoy the best of resort life with dining, shopping, dancing, conversation and more. Summer in the City This program is designed for elders who cannot participate in getaways but wish to enjoy a special vacation day or two. Some outings will take groups of elders to the lake or to the Chicago Botanic Garden. Spa and casino days are also scheduled. In-home Summer Celebrations Our summer interns bring celebrations to our homebound elders. These special summer visits vary depending on the interests of the elder but generally include sharing a meal, playing a board game or watching a movie, or even planting flowers.

Build Your Legacy: Plan Now for Future Gifts We know Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly, Chicago Chapter is close to your heart. Your generous gifts mean so much to us! So as you plan ahead, you may be interested in these creative ways to financially benefit lonely elders far into the future, while helping you manage your budget today. • A bequest is a form of giving that’s accomplished simply by including a few sentences in your will or living trust. If you’ve already created your will, your estate planning attorney can easily make an amendment to your will, called a codicil. Our official bequest language is: “I give to Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly Chicago Chapter, an Illinois non-profit organization, whose present address is 355 N. Ashland Chicago, Illinois, and its successors forever, the sum of $_______ (or a percentage of the estate) (or the description of property or stock, etc.) to be used in such a manner as its Board of Directors determines.” • A gift of a percentage of your life insurance death benefits. You already know that a life insurance policy will help to keep your family financially secure if anything should happen to you. But you can also
choose to name Little Brothers as a partial beneficiary for a percentage of your policy, while retaining ownership of the policy (and thus the right to change the beneficiary designation at any time during your life). For example, you might consider designating 90 percent of the death benefit to your family and the remaining percentage to Little Brothers. • You can create a legacy gift by naming Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly on the beneficiary form of your savings, checking or pension account. All of these forms of legacy giving offer meaningful ways to continue your support to ensure lonely and isolated elders will enjoy life to the fullest. Each year, we are grateful for bequest gifts from generous donors who wish to ensure better lives for our elders for years to come. To learn how you can help Little Brothers’ elders today and in the future, consult your attorney or contact Cecilia Straney, Chief Development Officer, at: 312.455.1000 or email

NEWS & UPDATES Expanding in Northwest Indiana Jacqueline Townsend,
Expansion Program Coordinator for NW Indiana, reports that Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly is building vital momentum and interest in our neighboring state. Since late 2012, Townsend has launched active recruitment of volunteers and elders, an important phase that follows earlier introductory events and activities hosted by Little Brothers in Gary, Merrillville and other areas in the thriving Northwest Indiana corridor. Townsend says that more and more elders are excited about new opportunities to attend parties, meet new people and enjoy interaction. “Building relationships with friends is exciting to elders who are isolated and depressed. We can make them again feel part of society,” she says. Seven volunteers have been recruited to engage with area elders.
“We’ve succeeded in building awareness and gaining trust among the elders and residents, and we’re finally engaging the community in our work.” In addition, Townsend says that key organizations are serving as new referral sources and partners, including: Gary Manor Apartments, Gary Methodist Hospital Social Service Department, Calumet Township Trustee Office, Kennedy Library in Gary, Lake County Public Library in Merrillville and Sterling House in Merrillville. To learn more and get involved in Northwest Indiana program, contact Jacqueline Townsend at 219.736.5233; email jtownsend@ littlebrotherschicago.org; or visit www.littlebrothersindiana.org.

Q+A
Megan Donahue, Writer in Development, recently interviewed her co-worker Brittany Mabry, Volunteer Coordinator, who joined Little Brothers in November 2012. Brittany moved to Chicago from Virginia, where she had managed a volunteer crisis hotline. Megan, a freelance writer since 2004, started as our staff writer in March. Megan: What interested you about coming to Little Brothers? Brittany: The mission is really unique, and I love working with volunteers. It’s great there are so many volunteers here who get involved in so many different ways.
New to our team: Brittany Mabry (at left) and Megan Donahue
What are your top two most important responsibilities? Outreach and recruitment for volunteers, and helping find and coordinate volunteers to drive the elders. For outreach, I’ll be making connections in the community through different organizations and churches. Today’s online tools really help with this. I’m always eager to get new drivers, especially volunteers who can speak Spanish to communicate with our Spanishspeaking elders.
What’s special about being a volunteer driver? It’s a great way to spend time with an elder. You socialize in the car, while getting the elders from point A to point B, and then spend time with them at the party. Once volunteers get started, they see it isn’t difficult—and it’s a lot of fun. What makes you proud to work here? We offer an important service for elders and the little touches we provide make life worth living for them. I also like the team of wonderful people here who are making such a difference in the lives of isolated elders.
