Concert Check-list • Please no food, drinks, gum, cell phones, or cameras. • We won’t have an intermission, please use the restroom before the concert begins. • We love our beautiful concert hall, please keep your feet on the back of the seats in front of you. • Listen to and follow Jacomo just like we do. He will show you when it is time to applaud, to stomp and clap, and even when it’s time to rock it out! • He’s tricky so watch carefully. • Have fun and come back again!

Let’s Meet: Ludwig van Beethoven
Let’s Meet: Ludwig van Beethoven •Classical era German composer who influenced the Romantic Era. •Born Dec. 17th, 1770 in Bonn, Germany. •Moved to Vienna, Austria. •Began to go deaf at 28. •Died March 26, 1827 •He was 57. •Considered one of the greatest musical geniuses of all time!
Fun Facts About: Ludwig van Beethoven •A brilliant pianist. •Played piano for Mozart who said, “You will make a big noise in the world.” •Had a bad temper, but could also be kind and generous. •Wrote some of his best music after he went deaf. •Had 4 pianos with the legs cut off so he could ‘feel’ vibrations.
Fun Facts About: Ludwig van Beethoven •Wrote many types of music but most known for his 9 symphonies. •Symphony No. 5 is most famous. •Wrote Symphony No. 8 to help his friend, Maezel, who invented the metronome. •Some say his last words were, “I shall hear in Heaven.” •20,000 people attended his funeral.

Let’s Meet: John Philip Sousa •Romantic era American composer. •Born Nov. 6, 1854 in Washington, D.C. •Died suddenly on Mar. 6, 1932. •Died at the age of 77. •Wrote many kinds of music but most famous for writing marches. •Wrote 136 marches. •Known as the ‘March King.’
Fun Facts About: John Philip Sousa •Sousa’s father played trombone in the US Marine Corps band. •At 13, Sousa nearly ran off to join a circus band. His father caught him and enrolled him in the Marine Corps band instead. •Sousa played many instruments and helped invent the sousaphone. •Sousaphone is a tuba that wraps around the body.
Fun Facts About: John Philip Sousa •Sousa conducted the Marine band 12 years then started his own band that toured the world. •The Sousa band became most famous band in the world. •His “Stars and Stripes Forever” is the national march of the USA and last piece he conducted before he died. •Even his name is patriotic-
SOUSA.

Let’s Meet: Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky •Romantic era Russian Composer. •Born May 7, 1840 in Kamsko-Votkinsk, Russia. •Died Nov. 6, 1893. •Some say he died from cholera because he drank unboiled water. •He was 53.
Fun Facts About: Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky •Learned to speak French and German by age 6. •Was very shy and sad; had low selfesteem. •Nobody thought he had musical talent so he studied law. Went to work for the government. •Mozart’s music inspired him so much, he began to study music at the age of 23.
Fun Facts About: Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky •Loved Russian melodies and folk songs. •Wrote many symphonies, concertos, and ballets. •Visited the US and conducted at Carnegie Hall. •Most famous works are: The 1812 Overture; Symphony No. 6; The Nutcracker Suite and Swan Lake ballets.

Fun Facts About: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart •Played piano at 3. •Child prodigy-wrote 1st composition when he was only 4. •Music was effortless for him. •Toured Europe when he was 6. He played for kings and queens and other important people. •Met Bach’s youngest son, Johann Christoph Bach on tour.
Fun Facts About: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart •Moved to Vienna, Austria. •Between the ages of 8 and 19, he wrote 33 symphonies. •Married Constance and had children. •Learned to speak 15 different languages. •Famous for symphonies, operas, concertos, chorale music, and masses.

Let’s Meet: Igor Stravinsky •Russian pianist, composer and conductor during the Modern era. •Had great influence on 20th century music. •Born June 17 or 18, 1882 in St. Petersburg, Russia. •Has 2 birthdays because the Eastern Orthodox calendar did not match ours! •Died April 6, 1971. •He was 88.
Fun Facts About: Igor Stravinsky •As a young boy, got to see Tchaikovsky 2 weeks before Tchaikovsky died. •Began piano at age 9 but began to study law. •At 18, began to study composing with famous Russian composer, RimskyKorsakov. •Loved Russian music and Russian folk tales.
Fun Facts About: Igor Stravinsky •Diagheliv, head of Russian Ballet, asked him to write a ballet based on a Russian folk tale. •Audiences loved and hated, “The Firebird.” Caused a riot at it’s 1st performance! •WW I-Picasso painted his portrait. Police took it from him-thought it was a secret plan! •After WW II-moved to Los Angles, CA; became US citizen.

Let’s Meet: Edvard Grieg •A leading Romantic Era composer, and Norway’s most famous composer. •Born June 15, 1843 in Norway. •Died Sept. 4, 1907. •Was 64 when he died. •Loved his homeland and the music of Norway.
Fun Facts About: Edvard Grieg •Pianist. •Studied music in Europe but went back home every summer to write his music. •Loved Norway and helped Norway gain own identity. •Wrote a beautiful piano concerto, Concerto in A Minor, that is still played today. •Wrote music for plays--most famous piece is music for the play, “Peer Gynt.”

Fun Facts About: Leonard Bernstein •Studied music at Harvard. •Became assistant conductor of New York Philharmonic. •Big break came when he had to conduct a radio broadcasted concert last minute. •Conducted the popular CBS TV show, “Young Peoples Concert” •Loved teaching kids about classical music!
Fun Facts About: Leonard Bernstein •Liked jazzy, upbeat sounds and wrote music with lots of energy. •Liked to mix popular music with classical music. •Wrote 3 symphonies and music for Broadway musicals. •Best known for “West Side Story” and “Overture to Candide.”
