Britta Steffen Wins Germany’s First Gold Medal in the Olympic Water Cube With the "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 Swimming China Open behind us, China's National Aquatics Center has been tested successfully. A sizeable competitive force of more than 200 swimmers came to Beijing, but some top competitors the United States and Australia were absent, only sending observers. Germany was represented by 17 swimmers and took eight medals home. The first German gold medal at the water cube went to world record holder Britta Steffen, who has already qualified for the Beijing Olympic Games swimming events, in the 50 meter freestyle.

Beijing 2008 Pocket Guide The German Chamber of Commerce in China Beijing will publish a special Beijing Pocket Guide 2008, which is to come out in May. Customized versions are offered for companies who wish to provide an individual guide for guests they plan to host at the Beijing Olympic Games 2008. In a pocket format encompassing 80 pages, the booklet will provide insider information about Beijing and the Games, give tips on where to go for dinner and which sights are not to be
missed. The cover and initial pages of the travel guide will be customized, so companies will have an ideal marketing tool to reach their Olympic guests and partners. Research Symposium on “Expo into Community” Demonstration Centers
Germany Promotes “Germany and China, Together in Movement” through the Expo
On 26 th December 2007, the Activities Department of BSWEC and the Activities Guiding Department of Shanghai Spiritual Civilization Office jointly held the first research symposium on the principal work of “Expo into Community” Demonstration Centers. These centers are designed to bring the benefits of the Expo 2010 into t he c o m mu n i t ie s s u r ro u nd i ng Shanghai and throughout Greater China.
On 11th January, Hu Jingjun, Vice Director of the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination met with Ms. Ebba Scholl, Head of the Education and Cultural Section of the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Shanghai. Ms. Ebba Scholl stated that she would join hands with Shanghai to push forward the series activities of “Germany and China, moving ahead together.”
The symposium focused on the work of “Expo into Community” 2008 and the activities of the “800 day countdown.” Community representatives from 19 districts and counties introduced the cultural characteristics of their communities and gave their views and suggestions on related work. The community representatives expected to strengthen communication and information exchange with BSWEC, and to determine the corresponding work liaison mechanism.
Sing for the Expo Sponsored by the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination and executed by the Anthem Collection Office of Shanghai World Expo 2010, the Sing for the Expo - Top 10 Expo songs for 2007 launch party was held in Shanghai on 26th December 2007. The top 10 songs including “Dear
City,” “Better City, Better Life,” and “Calling For” were performed at the party. The collection began on 30th April 2007 and ended on 31st October 2007. The Anthem Collection Office received more than 600 entries from music lovers in nationwide.

Bund Gets a Makeover before being restored to its current position in a year's time. Both projects are being undertaken to allow the construction of a vehicle tunnel beneath the Bund to ease traffic flow above.
Pop Stars Croon for the Expo HongKong pop singer Alan Tam Wing Lun came to the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination on 28 th January. He visited the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center and ascended to the top of Expo Hall, overlooking the World Expo area still under construction. Hu Jinjun, deputy director of the Expo Bureau, met with Tam Wing Lun. Tam was glad to have the opportunity to take part in the series activities of Sing for the Expo. He wrote and performed a song for the
World Expo at his concert in February at the Shanghai Grand Stage. He also said that he wanted to take part in the warm-up performance in the Shanghai Expo Area. In addition, famous Canadian singer, Celine Dion, will hold her concert named “The Opportunity of Love – 2008 World Tour Shanghai,” on 4th April, an important event of the series Sing for the Expo. She wished the Shanghai Expo success at a recent press conference.
The German exhibitions and activities will cover environmental protection, one aspect of the 2010 Expo theme, Better City, Better Life. Hu said Hanover, Germany, hosted a very successful Expo in 2000, and noted that Germany has extensive experience in hosting international events, especially cultural events. Expo organizers expressed hope that the German exhibition would be highly successful in Shanghai in 2010.
Major construction work on the Bund is underway, city officials said. The curved road ramp of the Yan'an Elevated Road is closed to traffic while it is torn down in an operation that will take 120 days. At the other end of the Bund, the century-old Waibaidu Bridge has been closed to traffic since March. It is being dismantled piece by piece
The ramp, in place for only 10 years, has been hailed as the "No. 1 Curve in Asia" for its unique location giving a close-up view of the Bund and the skyscrapers on the Pudong side of the river. Eventually, the elevated ramp will be replaced by a lower ramp linking the elevated road to the tunnel. The new tunnel, 3.3km in length, will become an underground artery between Hongkou and Huangpu Districts.

Hamburg-China Alumni-Network – First Alumni-Dialogue in Shanghai “Our partnership between Hamburg and Shanghai is build upon sound mutual understanding.” With these words, Suzanna Fistric, Head of Asia and North America at the Hamburg Senatskanzlei, opened the first Alumni Dialogue in Shanghai. Due to the success and positive feedback of the January Alumni Dialogue in Hamburg, the Hamburg Liaison Office Shanghai and the Confucius Institute Hamburg took the opportunity to initiate such an event in Shanghai. Ideally, this event will continue on a bi-monthly basis, in order to encourage exchange between Shanghai and Hamburg natives, as well as long-lasting friendship.
Second, Christoph Scwanitz, who studied abroad in Shanghai in 1992 and again in 1993, shared his experience as a Hamburger in Shanghai. He enthusiastically detailed the new sights, sounds and smells of China, half a world away from his hometown. When asked why he came twice, he remarked, “I don’t know why I got to go [on the exchange program] twice. It was pure luck and the stupidity of the others who didn’t go!” Today, he lives and works in Shanghai.
In addition to Ms. Fistric, two speakers, both Hamburg-China Alumni, shared their experiences with the group. First, Zhuang Wei traveled to Hamburg in 1988 as an exchange student for his first trip outside of China. Landing initially in East Berlin, he recounted the unique experience of crossing the East-

Milestones 1986 - Hamburg and Shanghai founded the partnership, and the two cit-
delegations to spend 3-week-long visits at the partner cities. The partner schools are 3 high schools from Hamburg: the Walddoerfer Gymnasium, Christianeum und Ida-Ehre-Gesamtsschule, together with 4 high schools from Shanghai: the Shanghai High School, Shanghai SISU high school, Datong High School, and Weiyu High school. The exchange students visit the partner city and the partner schools to experience school life and learn from each other about the different culture. The exchange program has continued over the past 21 years, except for the year of SARS.
1997 - The intercultural exchange organization AFS (American Field Serv-
ice ) started the student exchange program in cooperation with Shanghai Educational Association of International Exchange (SEAIE) to support foreign students coming to Shanghai.
2004 - The Shanghai-Hamburg ZEIT scholarship exchange program began
and several students from Shanghai and Hamburg took part in a one-yearlong exchange program in the partner cities at just 17 years of age.

Confucius Institute Hamburg Holds HSK Exam In Fall 2007, the Confucius Institute at Hamburg University was granted the license to hold officially recognized Hanyu shuiping kaoshi (HSK) exams, the official Chinese Language Exam. The exams will be held once in the spring and once in the fall, with preparation courses available. The HSK is the Chinese equivalent of the well know TestDaF, Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache or TOEFL, Test of English as a Foreign Language. A successful test allows the candidate to attend a Chinese high school or university, and it growing in importance. This spring, the Confucius Institute Hamburg began a comprehensive language program for various levels, including evening courses. Through these language programs and the Sino-German community “Chinese Corner,” it is hoped that the close relationship between Hamburg and Shanghai will continue to grow.

Why is catering important?
What do caterers actually do? A catering company is a restaurant without a guestroom, they set up wherever you need them. Think outside the box: a factory, an office building, a park, a ship, the roof-top of a high-rise or even the F1 race track could be suitable. Caterers are service providers specializing in food and drinks. Hence, they have mobile kitchen and bar equipment. Usually caterers have additional services such as the provision of manpower or coordination of music, flowers and decorations. In some cases, they even provide locations and event design.
More and more insurers are adopting creative measures for the future. Allianz provides several examples. In the UK, the company signed ClimateWise, an initiative encouraging companies to build climate change into their business plans. When the company decides whether to issue insurance to companies, it now considers each company’s CO2 emissions profile as a risk factor. Last year they founded a new comprehensive company: Allianz Climate Solutions (ACS), and this company is focusing on China.
Who should contact the caterer? Caterers are professional businesses, and upon contacting them you might be amazed by how many questions they ask. It is unlikely that a personal assistant to the CEO has all of these answers. The marketing department is the right choice here, because the event should reflect the image and culture of the hosting company.
China a Major Player Given its energy demand, China is a pivotal player in global climate protection and renewable energy markets. It is estimated that by 2020, China will invest over EUR 150bn in renewable energy, producing 300GW of hydropower, 30GW of wind power, 20GW of biomass power and 1/GW of solar power. The current Five-Year Plan calls for 16% of energy to come from renewable sources and pollution to be cut by 10%.
The chief risk officers of 19 of the world’s top insurers agree that “Climate change has the potential to develop into the greatest challenge of the 21st century.” Scientists assert that current changes in temperature are unprecedented in human history. As a result, they predict that natural catastrophes will surely increase. Global warming due to greenhouse gas emissions will continue to change the world’s climate for decades, even if we were to stop emitting greenhouse gases immediately.

First, a request for quotation should be sent to 3 caterers. The best proposal can be used for counter-quotations in a second run, but remove the logo to ensure anonymity. It is wise to include a 5 star hotel, an independent caterer and a restaurant. Second, it is essential to visit their production site for inspection before signing any contract, which can be paired with a complimentary tasting of the event menu. Follow your natural instincts when inspecting their facilities, which might include anything from a restaurant to a warehouse. How old is the equipment? What is its condition? Is it clean and well maintained? How about the personal hygiene of the staff? What you see here is what you get. Don’t believe, “Sorry it looks a bit messy because we just had this big event, normally everything is much cleaner.”
Tailoring the perfect event Contact the caterer at least two weeks in advance if possible. Take mental notes when they ask you questions: “How does someone in your company pick up the phone? What is the first sentence of your receptionist?” These might be just the right questions to better understand the culture of your company. This is what separates the rookie from the professional. The right caterer for you must want to understand you. When was the last event? Where was it? What was served? Was there any feedback? Can I talk to the organizer? Who are the attendees? Are there any vegetarians or food restricted participants to be thought after?

After a slow start, the market is now growing very fast, rising from 5% of global emission certificates in 2004 to a predicted 50% by 2012. China is already the largest supplier of credits under the global scheme: over EUR 2bn of credits have gone from China to Europe and Japan. And it is not just large companies that can benefit.

Everybody knows the old saying: Love goes through the stomach. This couldn’t be truer in China. Food and beverages have always been counted among the most frequently used negotiating tools. One of the largest companies, Germany’s Allianz SE, can serve as an example of insurance losses due to natural catastrophes: EUR 847m in losses to floods in Germany in 2002, EUR 1.09bn globally to hurricanes in 2005, and EUR 340m to just one European windstorm, Kyrill, in 2007. Over 40% of Allianz’ global insurance losses are weather-related. For all insurers, weather-related claims have increased 15-fold over the last 30 years. The insurance bill for southern China’s recent odd-ball weather conditions is not yet certain, nor is its cause. However, such phenomena lead to predictions that average yearly losses may grow to more than USD 40bn between 2010 and 2020.

Heart To Heart Shanghai In 2003, expatriate volunteers formed Heart to Heart to hold weekly hospital play groups with children hospitalized for heart surgery. Today, Heart to Heart has expanded its support by fundraising to sponsor children who could not normally afford the necessary surgery. Additionally, Heart to Heart now distributes clothing, blankets, toys and books to the children in need and their families. Some book collections have been large enough to start libraries in rural village schools. Heart To Heart is entirely run by volunteers. Their maxim Life Saving, Life Changing and Life Enhancing is paramount in all they do to help the children have a chance at a longer life. Initially relying on cash donations from members to raise the average RMB 25,000 needed for such surgery, Heart To Heart’s first sponsorship of a beautiful girl, Guo Xi Ping from Xuyi took place in March 2005. Since returning to her village, volunteers have visited her twice and learned that now she is one of the top students in her class!
Helping Hands Heart Bears However, the list of candidates for surgery sponsorship submitted by the Provincial Women’s Federations continued to grow. As a result, the idea of selling Heart Volunteers assembling heart bears
for the sale of Heart Bears as not only were many sold, but patrons have since sponsored heart surgery.
Beyond the Hospital Room Heart To Heart also supports the sponsored children upon returning to their villages, as volunteers noticed that the villages are in need of items such as clothing, blankets, toys and personal hygiene products. A January 2008 visit, amidst blizzard conditions, to the Huangshan area of Anhui province was timely and testament to the needs of many of these schools & villages for support. The truck loads of donated items were gratefully received.
Library Project Visits to sponsored children’s rural schools have also made volunteers aware that many were lacking library books and other necessary supplies. Heart To Heart began promoting the donation of school library books. RMB 15,000 is all that is required to supply a large quantity of books to such schools. The headmasters and teachers have expressed their thanks with the old Chinese saying, “receiving a gift of charcoal during a very harsh winter.” Heart To Heart is now eager to attract many more library sponsorship donations as this provides an ongoing benefit. Computers are also important and welcome donations. So far, AustCham, The Australian Women’s Group and Dulwich School have supported this new venture. Pebeo painting class cheers up the children at the hospital. The play sessions benefit the children both physically and emotionally.

The Wild Swans Paperback edition, German Expats who have spent any length of time in the country are torn between fascination and frustration when facing their surroundings, given the boundless dynamism and obviously limitless possibilities of China’s breakneck development. Society seems governed by a kind of turbocharged capitalism rather than by communism. But to understand the seeming incongruity of today’s China, one should study its history in the 20th century, as portrayed in Yong Chang’s autobiographical work “The Wild Swans.” She tells the tale of her grandmother, who was sold by her own father to a Manchurian warlord as a concubine; of the Japanese invasion, and of the war between the Communists and the Nationalists. She tells of her mother, an enthusiastic, idealistic young cadre, and her journey through the later half of the 20th century. Under Deng Xiaoping changes begin that will have such unanticipated results – the very dynamism that we, lacking context, sometimes have a hard time grasping. The work’s 700 pages require concentration. Many events are described in detail, and it is sometimes hard to keep the plot in mind. However, expats who wish to experience more of their host country than foot massage and the considerable joys of Chinese cuisine, will gain an understanding of how the current “no holds barred” development could arise from the influences and trials of recent Chinese history. Helping Hands volunteers not only become involved with the sale of the Heart Bears but also help to either knit the cardigans that these Heart Bears wear or to finish the bears off ready for sale with buttons, a red crystal heart and a personalized name tag. This personalized name tag bears the name of one of the 94 children that we have sponsored to date and also states “a good doctor repaired my heart and now I can walk to school.”
Many individuals and a number of corporations have contributed either in full or in part to the RMB 25,000 needed to sponsor a child’s surgery. All sponsors are given full details of their sponsored child and are encouraged to visit the child while he/she is hospitalized. This is a very heart-warming moment for the child, his/her family and the sponsor. Our Heart Bears have not only become good sources of income, but have also raised awareness for Heart To Heart’s mission throughout the Shanghai expatriate community. Companies such as AMEC & PricewaterhouseCoopers have purchased them as corporate gifts, and others like Coca-Cola & Visteon have taken them as consignment for their staff to purchase. Heart to Heart produced a limited edition Heart Bear for Dulwich School, the Shanghai American School Prom, and the BritCham St. Andrew’s Ball and Burns Night Suppers. Local guides offer unique experience in western Yunnan’s mountains: minority villages, picturesque mountain backdrops and local culture
Joint Showing: Chinese and German Artist in Huantie An exhibit entitled “German and Chinese Art” was held in Beijing’s Huantie Art Cluster in January-February, 2008. Huantie is beyond the NE 5th Ring Road, close to the Dashanzi Art District. This exhibit took place in the gallery of well-known Chinese painter Hao Li, and was conceived by her as a compendium of German and Chinese approaches to art. Her own contribution encompassed a number of her colorful and touching portrayals of children at play.
Slightly dazed and disoriented, a shrill voice calling our names jolted us back into reality as we wandered around the drop-off point for Tiger Leaping Gorge en route to Zhongdian, known as the ‘real’ Shangri-la. Our guide, thin and barely 150cm tall with long black hair and bloodshot eyes, motioned for us to follow. We gave each other a skeptical look, before surveying our guide a second time. His clothes were two sizes too big, and his pockets contained all the vitals: cigarettes, lighters, a pocket knife and a bottle opener. “Hello, I am Sky. I am Tibetan nationality and I will be the local guide. So, you are ready for see Tiger Leaping Gorge?” We followed cautiously down the stairway, jam-packed with tour groups and hawkers tooting every worthless trinket imaginable. We shuffled from platform to platform, took photos and sort of saw the mountain landscape à la mass tourism. Continuing on to Zhongdian, we stopped at the only restaurant in a small village. We followed Sky to the open-air patio where we plopped down unenthusiastically in flimsy plastic chairs. “Can we get cold beer?” Cold beer, a rarity in rural China, but at this point I needed a drink.
“Okay, we continue. I want to visit some friends in another village on the way, what you think?” “Gah!” my dad replied again enthusiastically. I shot him a shocked glance. A half hour and several kilometers of winding rounds later, we pulled off the road onto a muddy lane leading to a tiny, unnamed village set against a backdrop of snowcapped peaks with clouds hanging so close you could almost touch them. When we stopped, the entire village stopped. Clearly, few cars and even fewer foreigners frequented the area. We walked to a two story wooden house, where April - May 2008 | 74
Four hours later, we were on back our way to Zhongdian. The trip had definitely taken a turn for the better. Annual horse races in the region brought everyone out of the house, and livened their antics with intense betting and dances. Buddhist temples coated in gold towered above valleys below. The air was fresh and welcome, although thin at the high altitude. On the way back to Lijiang, we ascended the famous Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, bundled head to toe. Amidst the lively locals and their vibrant mountain traditions, one can indeed discover the pure feeling of Shangri-la, where one can reach up and touch the sky.

The German artist, Werner Arnold, has been living in Beijing for 6 years. Known as a businessman with his own real estate and consulting firm, his public debut as an artist put a spotlight on a previously unknown facet of his character. Rigorous, colorized geometric shapes dominate the world of his art. For him, color is a sculptural element, often applied with a spatula. It testifies to the passion, drawing its lifeblood from precision, with which he seeks to construct his paintings. Iridescent blue to lavender paste-like surfaces, housed within frames of diverse colors, create depth. They are usually centered within yellow circles or squares. These paintings are the “Ordnungsprinzip” come alive as a leitmotif. We look forward with anticipation to his future work.

An Installation Saluting the Construction Workers Building the New China jing at the beginning of February 2008 celebrated. Appropriately located near one of Beijing’s 9,000 construction sites, in Chaoyang Park, the work of German artist Wendy Hack and Chinese artist Li Yi was a wall of hard hats, some decorated by the artists, and many by the passing public. Imagine waking up at 4:30 in the morning six days a week in a room shared with five others, and going to work 250m above the ground with little more than a hard hat as protection. You eat on the sidewalk in the chilling breeze and return at the end of the day, dirty and exhausted, knowing your family is more than 1,000km away. You earn less than RMB 1,000 per month. 80-150m such workers are building the CCTV Tower in Beijing, the skyscrapers of Shanghai, the airports, bridges, highways, and subways of the new China, that an installation in Beiwww.china.ahk.de
“We have come here today to show appreciation to a group of people whose exact size can only be estimated” Conrad Hässler, of the Cultural Department, German Embassy Beijing, said at the opening. “It provides an interactive space for all generations to dwell on the effort made by the workers who have given this country a new appearance. I invite everyone to decorate one of the helmets. ZDF Television Presents 2 Evenings of Films by Diana Zimmermann and Johannes Hano in Beijing
Since March of 2007, Diana Zimmermann has been a correspondent for ZDF in Beijing. Johannes Hano heads ZDFs studio there. The short documentaries they shot about diverse aspects of life China in the past year were presented to the public at the German Embassy School in Beijing on two evenings in February 2008. Topics ranged from private property, the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong’s
return, and the Olympic Games, to the elderly in China, developments in Taiwan, and Inner Mongolia. The Prestigious “Silver Bear” at the Berlinale Film Festival Goes to Wang Xiaoshuai The success rate of Chinese films at the Berlin film festival Berlinale continues unabated. In 2008 a Chinese director was honored again. Wang Xiaoshuai accepted a Silver Bear for “best script” for his film Zuo You (In Love We Trust). It was his second win in Berlin. In 2001, the jury had

Sky immediately popped off all the bottle caps and scratched the underside of each one frantically. “Gah! We won a free beer!” he screamed in excitement. “Hey, say Gah! Gah is what Tibetans say when it is good.” I chuckled as we were given our free beer. My dad popped the top, “Gah! We won again!” Note: he can’t even read Chinese. Sky signaled he would play along. He motioned for the waitress, telling her we “won” a second time, and without question, she brought us a second free beer. This continued until we downed four free beers.
the animals lived on the first floor and the owners occupied the second. The furniture was wooden, and far more intricate than I had anticipated in the remote mountains of western Yunnan. The smell of boiling milk wafted through the air, and we soon learned from our hosts that yak’s milk was being prepared on the iron stove. We took a seat on small wooden stools and were handed a bowl full of what we thought was water. The sharp liquid cut our taste buds, revealing otherwise. I swallowed with my eyes clenched shut, then gawked in disbelief as Sky chugged a bowlful of Qingkejiu – the local liquor. My dad chuckled and motioned towards the yak’s milk being poured for us. With chopsticks, we slowly sifted ground barley into the milk for a pudding-like meal. Bland and reminiscent of Cheerios cereal, it nevertheless helped me polish off the Qingkejiu. Remarkably, Sky finished three bowls, telling us story after story of bar fights and local women.
