Dear Lamplighter Community, Last month after the incredible Carnival – Under the Big Top, I was reminded of the lyrics from Rent: “Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes….How do you measure a year? In daylights, in sunsets, in midnights, in cups of coffee…how do you measure a year?” We began the fall season at Lamplighter just as the lyrics to the popular song brilliantly express…with lots of laughter, smiles, hard work, and deep respect for the school of which we are so fond. A special thank you to Carmen Yung, Brenna Lambert, Stefanie Nielson and members of their committees for organizing an event that will be remembered for many years to come; reunions and gatherings that include alums, parents, and grandparents connect us and help to shape childhood and arguably adulthood.

Many will remember that in 2012, the school community participated in developing the five­­-year Strategic Plan. Surveys were taken and meetings were held as we worked together to plan for the future. The entire document (available on the website) set a very high bar for continuing to build and sustain the Lamplighter environment both academically and in the physical space or infrastructure. Our planning over the last few years has been targeted and intentional. In May, the Board of Trustees voted to move forward on a Campaign that will be centered on People, Place, and Program.

In the area of people, our goal is to ensure that we continue to have the strongest faculty with access to the best professional development possible in order to bring new knowledge to our students. In the area of programs, we are committed to the partnerships we are building. The connections to the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, SMU, Commit! and The Dallas Arboretum deepen the student experience and provide authentic learning. It is exciting to observe how teaching and learning are being transformed and how new opportunities abound as a result of our work with these important cultural institutions. Q&A

with the New Board Chair

This interview with Catherine Rose, Lamplighter Board Chair and former parent, was conducted and condensed by LampPost. LP: What are you most excited about for Lamplighter in the 2014–15 school year? CR: Lamplighter is about the people—the special students, of course, but also the families, faculty, and leadership who care deeply about the school’s mission; and it’s also about the unique program. The energy around the Lamplighter experience is palpable around campus—the Carnival was a huge success and an indication of how people feel about the school. I’m excited about the enthusiasm and energy at school and all the work that the school is doing on the Strategic Plan. LP: Has the Board of Trustees set goals for the 2014–15 school year?

deliberate progress on the Strategic Plan, as well as the Academic Plan. For instance, one goal of the plan is to broaden external and internal awareness about Lamplighter and its programs. Last year, Dr. Hill and her team initiated and completed a thorough branding process which resulted in a new logo, a refined identity about the school, and a really terrific new website which I hope all parents are using! Those successes are just a few ways we are evaluating progress against the goals of the plan. Another goal of the Strategic Plan ensures that Lamplighter’s facilities deliver on the plan’s programmatic goals–as well as the mission. Toward that goal, the Board of Trustees and Dr. Hill have been taking a hard look at aligning form and function on campus—all focused on enhancing our students’ experiences. This fall, the Board and Dr. Hill are refining the scope and precise needs of the campus, and we expect to share specific plans later this school year.

CR: For the past several years, the Board of Trustees has set annual goals early in each school year. During our full board training session in late August, Governance Chair Sarah Weinberg led a goal-setting exercise in which all participated. It is a tremendous amount of work, but so valuable for the school in keeping all efforts focused on the vision of the plan. LP: Your children are Lamplighter graduates and now in middle and high school. Why did you want to serve as Board Chair–or why is the Lamplighter Board and School still important to you? CR: I wish I had attended Lamplighter! All of the boys—Will included—attended Lamplighter, and I’m just so jealous of their experiences. The school’s mission, “Dedicated to igniting the potential of each child, Lamplighter engages children in the joy of learning through intellectual discovery in a creative, inclusive, and collaborative environment,” speaks deeply to me about the importance of early childhood education and the need to kindle the wonder in each child. It is also a specific approach that fosters interest from within that I believe to be critical for future success in life. It is such a pleasure to watch our three Lamplighter grads—Alex, Charlie, and Jack—as they grow as students and lifelong learners.

OnBoard New Trustees On Board

Liza Lee

Liza brings over 40 years of experience in independent schools. Most recently, she was Head of School at Columbus School for Girls in Columbus, Ohio, where she served as Head from 2009–2014. Liza served as Headmistress of The Hockaday School from 1990–2004, and also served as Interim Head of School at Trinity Episcopal School in Austin, Texas, and PorterGaud School in Charleston, South Carolina. In addition, Liza also served as a board member for numerous independent schools as well as the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). Liza received a bahcelor’s degree in English magna cum laude from Mt. Holyoke College and a master’s degree in English from Columbia University. She and her husband, Dr. William Lee, have three grown children, sons Matthew and Ted, and daughter Caroline. 6

Douglas MacMahon

Douglas is a Managing Member of Moran Capital, LLC, a privately held real estate investment company. Prior to founding Moran in 2011, Doug was a Managing Member of Farallon Capital Management, LLC, a privately held investment advisor. He began his career working for Farallon in San Francisco and relocated to New York to open a new office for the company. Doug received a bachelor’s degree from the College of Business Administration at the University of Texas and currently serves as a member of the Associate Council for the Real Estate Finance and Investment Center at the McCombs School of Business. Doug and his wife, Catherine, have been married for 10 years and are the proud parents of three children, Lamplighter Kindergarteners, Andrew and Carter, and 2-year old Lollie.

Greg Marquess

Greg joins the Board as the Lamplighter Alumni Council President for 2014–2015. He has been a member of the Council for 10 years. Greg is a proud graduate of the class of ’79 and has four siblings, all of whom attended Lamplighter. Greg graduated from Lakehill Preparatory School and later attended UNT where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration. In 1999, he founded Skintrigue, Inc. which distributes medical-grade dermatology products. His dedication to and love for the School has remained with him throughout his life. In 1991, he volunteered to coach the Lamplighter Sharks, a kindergarten girls soccer team. Greg enjoyed the experience so much that he continued coaching the same group of girls through their fourth grade year.

Jed Morse

Jed Morse is Chief Curator at the Nasher Sculpture Center where he has organized, overseen, or assisted with numerous exhibitions since 2002. In addition to his duties at the Nasher, Mr. Morse has contributed to exhibition projects, such as Barcelona and Modernity: Picasso, Gaudí, Miró, Dalí (Cleveland Museum of Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2006), and has lectured widely on a variety of topics. Jed received his bachelor’s degree with honors in art history from Middlebury College and his master’s in Modern Art History from the University of Texas at Austin. Jed is a Lamplighter alumnus who went on to graduate from St. Mark’s School of Texas. He and his wife, Dr. Margaret Morse, have two children, Sam (5), a kindergartener at Lamplighter, and Meg (3), a potential future Lamplighter student.

Kristin Rees

Kristin has been involved in the Lamplighter Annual Fund for six years and served as co-chair for three of those years. She also served on the Advancement Committee and co-chaired the LPA’s Community Outreach Committee. Kristin received her bachelor’s degree from SMU and her Master’s of Business Administration from The University of Texas. After business school, Kristin spent several years in management consulting before pursuing entrepreneurial roles with two start-up companies. Most recently, she was Chief Operating Officer of a hedge fund. Kristin and her husband, Ricky, have three Lamplighter girls: Gabriella is a 2014 graduate, Alex is in the class of 2016, and Sofia will graduate Lamplighter in 2019.

Jean-Louis Trochu

Jean-Louis (JL) Trochu is a vice president at Texas Instruments where he leads TI’s corporate development and venture capital team. He joins the Lamplighter Board of Trustees as an alumni parent. He and Cynthia are the proud parents of Claire (a 2012 Lamplighter alumna) now in seventh grade at The Hockaday School, and of Jack (Lamplighter Class of 2014), a fifth grader at Episcopal School of Dallas. Jean-Louis was born and raised in Nantes, France. He graduated from the EM Lyon (France) and has a Master’s of Business Administration. from The University of Chicago Booth School. JeanLouis is also a vice president on the Board of Directors of the DFW French-American Chamber of Commerce; he previously served as Treasurer.

Carmen Yung

Carmen Yung is mom to Lamplighter kindergartener Andie and Lamplighter alumna Sophia. Born in Panama and raised in East Texas, Carmen studied International Relations at Tufts University and University College London and then returned to Texas to study law at SMU School of Law. She practiced law for 16 years, primarily in the areas of real estate and corporate law. Recently, she shifted gears away from law to spend more time with her family and pursue other interests, including volunteering at Lamplighter. She and her husband, Andy, enjoy travelling and outdoor adventures with their girls.

Higher Learning Lamplighter partners with SMU to strengthen the School’s curriculum and best practices

Working with the Dean of SMU’s Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development, Dr. David Chard, Lamplighter is committed to implementing the current best practices in the field of education.

CoverStory Strong literacy skill development is a focus of the Lamplighter curriculum. In a quest for continual and sustained improvement, reading and Spanish teachers have partnered with SMU faculty to revise lessons to better meet the needs of Lamplighter students. “Having rich collaborations with museums and universities are ways that our school measures how our academic program stands up to the latest research and best practices for teaching children,” Raney continued. In recent years, Lamplighter has completed a thorough examination of its literacy curriculum, specifically how the School teaches reading. “We participate in the best professional development opportunities available,” Dr. Hill reported. Fourth grade teacher Jody Stout believes Lamplighter’s stated commitment to engaging and igniting the spirit of life-long learners is a mission that extends to the whole of the community. “Partnering with SMU’s Simmons School of Education is one way Lamplighter teachers have access to progressive research and programming,” she explained. Raney added that Lamplighter literacy teachers are continually making certain that students attain reading and writing skills needed to move forward. “Dr. Diane Gifford and Dr. Stephanie Al Otaiba guide us through assessments that are useful,” she said. “They share the most recent and relevant research on curriculum and instruction, as well as new resources that support our work.” Raney explained that the SMU partnership “gives us access to experts like Dr. Al Otaiba, who helped us better understand the components of an excellent reading program and the significance of increased time spent reading.” According Dr. Al Otaiba, “The Lamplighter facilities, faculty, and leadership team amaze me.” She described how SMU is excited about such partnerships with schools. “During one of my visits, a doctoral student and I engaged with faculty around the topic of vocabulary building.” She said the 10

knowledge level of Lamplighter faculty was already strong and that they were open to learning new strategies. “It was evident that the School’s culture is innovative and iterative.” She said one of her colleagues, Dr. Gifford, works with the faculty’s literacy team. “This year they are working on writing initiatives,” she expanded. Dr. Gifford, a research specialist at SMU’s School of Education, also meets regularly with Lamplighter faculty so they can discuss various aspects of reading instruction. In turn, Gifford offers books and articles that support the School’s literacy curriculum. Gifford described the partnership as one that is beneficial for everyone. “I am thrilled to be able to work with these teachers and impart what I know about research to classroom practices. In order for ALL children to succeed and maximize their learning potential, there must be a shared system of responsibility between researchers and educators.” Gifford explained that SMU faculty is committed to bringing evidence-based practices to the classroom. “The responsiveness of the teachers and administrators at Lamplighter to learning about what works with children is exciting to see. I am thankful for the opportunity.”

Third grade teacher Becky Logsdon said the partnership shows how Lamplighter is committed to implementing the current best practices in the field of education. “We’re continually striving to learn more about how to improve our instruction and pedagogy.” She said that Dr. Gifford has brought a wealth of knowledge. “She suggested assessments, intervention strategies, lesson ideas, and ways of organizing our curriculum.” Logsdon explained that the work with Gifford “continues to ensure that our curriculum is both rigorous and developmentally appropriate.” Fellow faculty members are also supportive. Annie Jonas, a second grade teacher, explained that Lamplighter faculty meets with Gifford to discuss reading topics and questions “that are currently happening in our classrooms.” She explained that the School’s literacy teachers appreciate the resources. “From organizing lesson plans to analyzing data, we value Dr. Gifford’s guidance and support of our literacy curriculum.” Teacher Stout believes regular workshops and resource exchanges with Dr. Gifford have provided teachers “with dynamic opportunities to both challenge and reinforce our own best practices,” she said.

CoverStory “We are certain that our relationship with SMU strengthens our work each day and that our collaboration with professors such as Dr. Gifford reinforces our commitment to serious education,” Raney revealed. Lamplighter is also working with SMU to improve its foreign language program with School of Education professor Dr. Doris Baker. “Keen observations and the vast experience of Dr. Baker provide us with insights that strengthen our Spanish program,” said Jezabel Guadalupe, Lamplighter’s Lower School Spanish teacher. “Her connection with a school in Santiago, Chile, is opening doors to another world for our students.”

Dr. Baker believes the partnership with Lamplighter has provided “a closer connection between research and practice.” She explained that frequently, the dissemination of research findings takes longer than expected, and it is difficult for practitioners to access that research and implement the findings in their classrooms. “This gap between research and practice is particularly acute when teaching children a second language,” she explained. “Thus, the partnership with Lamplighter provides the opportunity for researchers like me to share with their Spanish teachers what we know about teaching children a second language.” At the same time, Baker said she also benefits from the partnership “by learning firsthand what teachers are struggling with most, and how the research could be focused when trying to find answers to the teachers’ most pressing issues.”

Dr. Baker and Ms. Guadalupe worked on using content that students will already be learning in their science classes to teach words and sentences in Spanish. “Ms. Guadalupe and I discussed the fact that when students are already familiar with the content, it makes the learning of words in Spanish less demanding; following the research indicating that it is difficult for second language learners to focus on both the content and the language.” 1

said Baker understands teaching and language acquisition well; therefore, “working with her has been not only rewarding but also engaging.”

She said the life cycle of butterflies is an example of faculty teaching words and sentences in Spanish as well as connecting students to cultural events in Latin American countries and Spain. “Ms. Guadalupe and I discussed the idea of children describing the life cycle of the Monarch butterflies that migrate to the state of Michoacán, Mexico, every year, as well as how the Monarch butterflies form part of the Day of the Dead celebration in Mexico.” She explained how, in this particular case, students would be learning the vocabulary to describe the life cycle of the Monarch butterflies (which they would already know in English), and at the same time they would be learning about an important tradition in Mexico. Baker suggested that by reducing the content demands (the content students have already learned), the language demands can be increased, and students can focus on building their language proficiency.

Assessing the partnership, Raney suggested that “most schools do not have access to such professionals.” She is encouraged that Lamplighter faculty understands “what a privilege it is to have these professors just a quick drive, phone call, or an email away.” Dr. Al Otaiba concurred, “Our College of Education team enjoys working in partnership with Lamplighter teachers. There are tremendous reciprocal benefits and we hope that this may also lead to some research initiatives.”

Other ideas Baker and Guadalupe discussed to enhance Spanish language instruction include building student vocabulary “with simple but engaging games and activities that can help students read and write books in Spanish,” described Baker. “I look forward to the continued collaboration with Lamplighter and supporting their efforts to teach children Spanish, the second most widely spoken language in the world,” she smiled. Guadalupe agreed and said the collaboration with Dr. Baker has been particularly beneficial for the School’s Spanish program. “Professor Baker has extensive experience with assessment tools and the developing of language as well as reading programs.” She

Baker, who was born in Brazil, grew up in Colombia and Mexico. The highly credentialed professor has also provided professional development and consultation to parents, teachers, and researchers in Chile, Argentina, Mexico, and Spain.

Next on tap is expanding the partnership to include the School’s early childhood division. Judith Mullens, director of the EC program at Lamplighter, said she is “looking forward to professional development opportunities” with SMU professors of Early Childhood Development and Education. Romancing Romania By Jezabel Guadalupe, Lamplighter Spanish teacher

This summer I had the extraordinary opportunity of exploring and photographing some parts of a special country called Romania in southeastern Europe. Being able to explore and photograph ancient fortified churches, wooden churches, markets, cemeteries, artisans, and private houses, as well as its beautiful people was a true delight. My first stop was in the region of Maramures, one of the farthest regions of the European Union. Villages in the mesmerizing Maramures region where people preserve old ways of life seem to be untouched by modern times. Shepherds, horse-drawn carts, unspoiled large pasture fields, hens clucking, large wood-carved gates, wood barns, and dirt roads are simply the norm in this breathtaking region. The second destination on my trip was the Transylvania region in central Romania. This region is home to well-preserved medieval Saxon towns such as Sighisoara and fortified churches such as the 14th century one in Biertan. Transylvania’s large towns in the summer are busy with locals and tourists, but easy to navigate on its cobbled streets. Small villages in the region are quiet throughout the day, but also full of excitement and charm. Last on my visit was the capital, Bucharest. Bucharest is the largest city in the country and also its cultural, industrial, and financial center. It is modern, old, accessible, and safe. An important element about the city is that landmarks appear to be always close in distance. You will notice people walking 14

everywhere. Historical and Communist-era architecture surrounds you. Coffee shops, bookstores, churches, and museums are available to you on almost every street of the centru (Romanian for town center). Bucharest is also home to the largest civil structure, named the People’s Palace, an impressive multi-purpose building constructed during the Communist era. Romania is a country of contrasts, rural and modern. It is a place that resembles a fairy tale, a place worth visiting, photographing, and enjoying. After exploring this unique and inspiring country, I felt extremely fortunate and accomplished: fortunate for having visited this wonderful place and accomplished for being able to capture it with pictures. I am currently working to complete a photographic essay of my experience, all thanks to the Mattingly fund!

Who knew that being awarded the Pat Mattingly Fund three years ago would have changed my life? It was 2011 when I was given the grant to attend a global Habitat for Humanity build in Fiji, and my view of the world expanded exponentially. At the end of this summer, I returned from Portugal where I had completed my third Global Village Habitat for Humanity build. I was there for almost two weeks rehabilitating an 80-year-old stone house for a single mother with three children. I worked alongside 16 people of different ages and backgrounds from across the United States. I love traveling and learning about diverse cultures along with meeting new and interesting people on these global builds. I also volunteer with Habitat for Humanity locally in Dallas with my two boys, Jake and Mitchell. I hope that I have instilled in my children the importance of community service and the love of helping others less fortunate. Habitat’s mission is to have “a world where everyone has a decent place to live.” We are so lucky to have that and so much more. Every week I check the Habitat for Humanity calendar for dates and locations for my next global build. I can’t wait; where will I go next?

Early Engineering Taking the “E” from STEM is the focus of a new Night Light class By Gretchen Pollom, Lamplighter’s Perot Museum of Nature and Science Coordinator

Children love to build, design, and create things. This happens at an early age while stacking cups, creating forts with pillows, using cardboard boxes to make houses and wood blocks to make towers, and turning Duplo Legos into simple machines and space ships. The more traditional Lego sets are equally fun for children and parents, but we often have different agendas: parents want to complete the project and display the tidy creations; children use the same opportunity to practice step-by-step directions, but the work does not stop there. When we are quiet, we will hear creative play at work. The characters come to life! When a Lego set breaks, as it will inevitably do, the same Lego pieces are reimagined as something new. This is when the creative juices flow. Children use household items like paper clips, coins, balloons, tape, glue, paper, cardboard, scissors, egg cartons, paper towel holders, plastic bottles, and bottle caps to make new things. Open spaces stocked with these common items are great laboratories for curious minds. Taking the “E” from STEM and using “engineering” as the focus for a new Night Light class is a logical next step for the inventive and curious students at Lamplighter. Students will brainstorm, plan,

FacultyFocus design, test, and share results related to their projects. Examples of some of the projects are creating a super bouncy ball out of a balloon, designing a parachute for a safe landing, building an instrument for measuring wind speed, designing a windmill that lifts weight, and creating something that will solve a problem. The more opportunities children have to ask questions, brainstorm ideas, design and build prototypes, test, redesign, and share their results, the more comfortable they will be in solving real-world problems. At the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, the Engineering Hall is a favorite of many children. For example, children can build a sturdy bridge for cars to drive across and design a building that can withstand an earthquake, both of which are important responsibilities of an engineer. Children delight in the “Build It Garage.” They design, test, and redesign their own cars, airplanes, rockets, and catapults. Lamplighter students will “build it” this Fall in “E is for Engineering.”

Exercising Options PE and Science Teachers collaborate By Gretchen Pollom, Lamplighter’s Perot Museum of Nature and Science Coordinator Last spring, teachers April Seeds and Bill Burton and I planned and taught a kindergarten lesson based on the Pitsco “STEM in the Gym” unit. This fall, we used our experiences and results to write a paper that we submitted to the magazine Science and Children. As many in the Lamplighter community know, Bill has written several articles that were published in or are in the pipeline for Science and Children. With Bill’s guidance, we developed a cross-curricular science and PE lesson focused on developing gross motor skills while reinforcing the kindergarten students’ understanding of simple machines and force.

Our first step in planning the lesson involved creating an overall vision for the students’ experience. We designed five stations that worked large muscle groups in the arms, legs, upper back, and core. The stations were set up with scooters, force plates, pulley systems, gears, wheels and axles, buckets, and balls. Our second step involved implementing and documenting the lesson. Each student had the opportunity to use the simple machine(s) at each station, to observe how machines made the work easier, and to compare and contrast how changing variables (e.g., the amount of force exerted) affected the experiment. Students used wheels and axles on the scooters and pulley systems attached to the wall to move one another across the floor; they used a gear and rope system to pull a scooter across the floor; and a brick-filled bucket was lifted off the floor using a pulley system. Finally, two stations were set up using force plates to measure the amount of force exerted when pushing off the wall or bouncing a ball. Our last step involved assessing the work, collecting photos, and writing the paper. This step taught us the most valuable lessons of the experience: what worked, what we would do differently, and what other opportunities exist for a PE and science “connection.” The students enjoyed the experience as evidenced by their reactions during the PE class.

Oh, the Places You’ll Go! By Judith Mullens, Director of Early Childhood

And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go...” – Dr. Seuss This summer, two colleagues from Lamplighter’s Early Childhood division did just that: they packed up their suitcases and flew off to New York City at the end of June for one week of intensive training at Columbia University Teachers College Reading & Writing Project (TCRWP) to learn more about teaching reading and writing from some of the greatest educators and authors in America and from around the world today. Because of Lamplighter’s commitment to a robust professional development program, each year teachers are able to turn their dreams into reality thereby greatly enriching the learning experiences of their students. This summer, Lamplighter faculty brought back new ideas and inspiration from David Booth, Professor Emeritus in Education at the University of Toronto; Lucy Calkins, 16

In Search of a Love of Reading Founding Director of TCRWP and author of numerous books on reading, including one of the top 10 New York Times bestselling educational books, Pathways to the Common Core; Kathy Collins, author of Growing Readers: Units of Study in the Primary Classroom; Mary Ehrenworth, co-author of Investigative Journalism and Position Papers: Research and Argument; and Jacqueline Woodson, author of the Coretta Scott King Award-winning book, Miracle’s Boys and The Other Side. The week flew by as teachers became students again: they went to incredibly rich classes; shared their insights and learning in small groups; attended lectures that made them cry, laugh, and think hard; and stayed up late doing their homework. On the last day, with suitcases in hand, Lamplighter faculty took one last trip around the corner to the Bank Street Bookstore in Morningside Heights to drink in the titles and illustrations of some of the best children’s books available today. All of this was packed up neatly inside the minds and hearts of these two educators and safely brought back to the students at Lamplighter. What a dream, what a gift. Thank you, Lamplighter, for making things that seem impossible, real.

By Hannah Brown, Kindergarten Teacher During the summer reading and writing workshop at Columbia University Teachers College in New York City, learning went well beyond the material presented by the workshop professors. I networked with teachers from other states and countries, heard from various speakers, such as the author of The Other Side; and had time to reflect and learn from supplemental readings during the evening hours. After hearing Jacqueline Woodson read her new book, The Other Side, I was moved to try to read picture books in the same way that our children read their books– by reading the pictures first. I learned that as adults, we forget how meaningful and magical the illustrations are in the books we read. I was challenged through Woodson’s lecture to read the pictures before I begin to look at the words with my students. This will help our youngest readers by helping them experience every part of the story. Picture books are again as special to me as they were when I was 5 years old. FacultyFocus gave me new insight and strategies to enrich and strengthen our reading program. Through featured authors and classic books, students will hear robust vocabulary while they are transported to other places that challenge their imagination and encourage curiosity. In our kindergarten classrooms, you will find our youngest independent readers are confident and proud of themselves, but the most important thing you will find are our students developing a love of reading.

Gesell’s theory is known as maturationaldevelopmental. It is the foundation of nearly every other theory of human development that came after Gesell’s. Early in the 20th century, Dr. Gesell observed and documented patterns in the way children develop, showing that all children go through similar and predictable sequences, though each child moves through these sequences at his or her own rate or pace. At Lamplighter, we frequently use the GDO in early childhood. The data we gather is always useful and is a piece of the puzzle when making decisions and understanding where a child is developmentally versus chronologically. Freshmen Faculty Lamplighter welcomes four new teachers Lower School teacher Maggie Fulton comes from a family of educators. Two of her sisters are teachers, and her grandfather was the founder of Greenhill School, from which she graduated. Ms. Fulton has a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education and a Master’s in Elementary Education from Texas Christian University. She taught two years in Frisco ISD and now teaches first grade.

“Though we have both been certified in Gesell, we attended the Gesell Developmental Observation (GDO) Workshop last May to learn about new additions to the assessment. Gesell’s mission is to promote the principles of child development as the basis for all decision making for young children. The vision is that all children enjoy their childhood, and that they have the time and opportunity to grow and to learn at their own pace and in their own way. We studied with Erin Akers, Director of Gesell’s National Lecture Staff, at St. James Episcopal School in Corpus Christi, Texas. Our workshop focused on early child development, specifically children ages 2½ through 6.

Another TCU alum, Lauren Hardage has a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education and will graduate from SMU with a Master of Liberal Studies this December. Ms. Hardage taught second grade at Uplift Infinity Prep and worked as a teaching assistant at The Hockaday School. The sister of a Lamplighter alumna, she teaches third grade math and social studies.

Kate Mouchet comes to Lamplighter from Georgia Southern University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education and a Master’s in Reading Education. Ms. Mouchet taught fourth grade in Richmond Hill and most recently worked as campus coordinator and team instructor for Readers to Leaders in Dallas. She teaches fourth grade social studies and writing.

Rachel Gutierrez partners with Sarah Burdick in Room 12 to teach Pre-K Half Day PM 3’s. Rachel is originally from Lexington, Kentucky. She received her Bachelor of Arts in English and also a Master’s in Education with Certification for EC-6-Highly Qualified from SMU. Rachel’s passion is reading to children. She has experience teaching Pre-K and Kindergarten at UpLift Luna Primary and in Highland Park ISD. Rachel comes from a family of educators. Her mother taught Pre-K for over 20 years and has been her lifelong role model and inspiration.

Josh traveled to Haiti this past year to volunteer in orphanages.

Miles had a short film accepted to SXSW 2013. Miles received the Estelle Dickens Service to Greenhill Award which is presented to the senior who has given the most outstanding service contribution to Greenhill School. Alex volunteered with Camp Summit. Lewis Carlson graduated from Greenhill School where he was a varsity debater and played varsity volleyball and varsity tennis. As Co-President of the Greenhill Business Club, Lewis appeared on CNNMoney. com which featured Greenhill School’s Business Club for its groundbreaking program of investing and managing real money in the stock market at the high school level.

Emily Church graduated from Highland Park High School where she was on the cross-country team, the volleyball team, and a Fish Camp Counselor. Her honors included National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, National English Honor Society, and National Spanish Honor Society. Emily won the IBM Master the Mainframe contest. As a senior, she was a HPHS prom court nominee and received Academic All State CrossCountry 4A. Will Church graduated from Highland Park High School where he was involved in the Community Service Council and Young Men’s Service League. Cameron Gavinski graduated from Lakehill Preparatory School where he created the idea of a school basketball tournament (Nothing But Nets) to raise money for mosquito nets in Africa. Cameron won first place in TAPPS Regional for Solo Acting (2014). He is now attending USC’s School of Cinematic Arts majoring in animation with a minor in theatre and comedy. Cameron is a member of USC’s improv group, Spoiler Alert. Grace Gilker graduated from The Hockaday School where she was on the Student Council and a member of the lacrosse team. Tanner Hakert graduated from The Episcopal School of Dallas where he was on the wrestling team. At ESD, Tanner received the Presidential Community Service Award for four years after logging more than twice the required number of community service hours each year. Paul Herz graduated from St. Mark’s School of Texas where he was recognized for Departmental Excellence in Computer Science. Paul studied abroad in Spain and performed at Carnegie Hall in March 2014 with HaZamir: The International Jewish High School Choir. Paul is an Eagle Scout. Paige Hughes graduated from Parish Episcopal School where she played junior varsity volleyball, was a Parish Legacy Leader, a student ambassador, and on the Rosettes Drill Team. Paige was a founding member of Parish’s Reading Partners Tutor program. Award. Paige was one of 10 girls selected nationally to represent Girl Scouts in its national 100th anniversary campaign.

Nick received the Greenhill Senior Leadership Award which is given to the member of the senior class who best demonstrates the qualities of leadership.

Rafe Shohet graduated from Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii where he was involved in soccer, sailing, and ultimate Frisbee. Dex Sienko graduated from Saint George’s School in Spokane, Washington. Dex played on the 2012–2013 2B State Champion basketball team. As a junior, Dex gave the fans at Spokane Arena something to remember when his dunk brought down the entire basket during a state tournament game. Dex was also a finalist for local high school athlete of the year. Megan Sims graduated from The Episcopal School of Dallas where she was Editor-in-Chief of ESD’s literary magazine, Itinerary. Megan’s honors include Yale Book Award, Dr. Jacob L. Kay Memorial Award for Photography, Maureen O’Donnell Oxford Classical Dictionary Award from the National Latin Exam, The Francile Ehricht Latin Award, AP Scholar with Distinction, and National Honor Society. Megan was a nine-year finalist in the Dallas Public Library Express Yourself! poetry competition. She was also a Student Voices columnist for The Dallas Morning News and chosen for the National Dallas Youth Poetry Slam team. Callie Stone graduated from Ursuline Academy. Callie received the Gold Award as a Girl Scout in Troup No. 578. She was a captain of the cheerleading squad at Cistercian. Callie is now taking a year off to travel with The Rustic Pathways program which combines service and adventure. She will be spending the fall in the South Pacific and the spring in Africa. Next year he plans to attend Texas Tech University. Alexandra Villareal graduated from The Hockaday School where she was a Commended Scholar and an AP Scholar. At Hockaday, Alexandra was a school ambassador and a forum leader of the Student Diversity Board. She was also golf captain and played for the championship team each year. She was a founding member of the Dallas PEACE Project program. Alexandra was named a 2013 Young Woman of Distinction by the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas Council.

AlumniNow CLASS OF 2010 HEADS TO HIGH SCHOOL is also a member of the elite Texas Select basketball team which is No. 5 in the nation. Kadon’s special memories of Lamplighter include Carnival, Ms.Yarbrough, and the fourth grade basketball team winning the championship. Audrey Magnuson studies at The Hockaday School. She likes sports, piano, and dance. Audrey was a middle school reporter at Hockaday.

Amelia Brown is currently attending The Hockaday School and was on the honor roll in seventh and eighth grade. As a freshman, Amelia is on the varsity cross-country team and became a member of the H Club. This summer, Amelia went to Peru through Global Aware. During her two weeks in Peru, she worked hard putting down pipes for fresh water to a village, building stoves and huts, and helping with a community school. Amelia fondly remembers being president of Lamplighter Layers. Emma Cabrales is a student at The Episcopal School of Dallas. Emma is in honors math and honors English, and participates in field hockey, soccer, and softball. She also serves as the ninth grade class president and is on the Community Service Council. Emma’s special memories of Lamplighter include Carnivals, Halloween Parades, Hootenannies, and AllSchool Programs. Lily Cameron attended middle school at The American School in Singapore. While at Lamplighter, Katherine’s entrepreneurial spirit shined brightly when she made red and white Lamplighter bracelets that were sold to Lamplighter faculty and staff. Reece Rabin continues his educational studies at St. Mark’s School of Texas. This summer Reece volunteered at Camp Lamplighter. Elizabeth Raff attends The Hockaday School and was on the honor roll for seventh and eighth grade. Elizabeth plays on the school’s tennis and volleyball teams and was the Middle School President. Elizabeth has fond memories of naming the barnyard animals in preschool at Lamplighter.

Alex Rose is a student at Greenhill School where he is on the high honor roll. Alex is also on the All Star DFW Lacrosse ninth grade team. This summer Alex volunteered at Camp Lamplighter. Alex has special memories of Ms. McCullough from Lamplighter. Shelby Schultz studies at The Hockaday School. Shelby likes to participate in soccer, lacrosse, and art. Sam Shane attends St. Mark’s School of Texas and is involved in cross country, soccer, track, United Synagogue Youth, and B’nai B’rith Youth Organization. Sam’s favorite memories of Lamplighter include the Austin trip, Opera, Hootenannies, and all of the amazing teachers. Camie Swango graduated from Good Shepard Episcopal School where she was on the head honor roll. Camie continues her studies at The Hockaday School. She is involved in the National Charity League and Dallas Cosmos Soccer Club. Gregory Toudouze attends Greenhill School and is involved in the Student Forum, Carter Caring Community Fund, High Honor Roll, football, baseball, lacrosse, and soccer. AlumniNow Matthew Toudouze continues his studies at Greenhill School. He is involved in the Student Forum, High Honor Roll, Texans soccer, and school sports. Matthew fondly remembers raising the chickens and Mr. B’s science contests from his time at Lamplighter. Nicholas Villareal attended middle school at The Parish Episcopal School where he was on the honor roll. Nicholas starred in the role of Scuttle in the middle school production of The Little Mermaid Jr. In 2012, Nicholas was selected to participate in the Junior National Youth Leadership Conference held in Washington, D.C. Nicholas continues his studies at Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas. Nicholas received the President’s Community Service Award–Gold and he is a Life Scout with the Boy Scouts of America. Nicholas’ special memories of Lamplighter include the Opera and theatre in the All-School Program. Amanda Warren continues her studies at The Episcopal School of Dallas where she has made the honor roll every quarter. Amanda is involved in the Community Service Council and National Charity League. In eighth grade, Amanda won the religion award and the bronze medal for the national Spanish exam. In seventh grade, Amanda received honorable mention in the art show. Amanda is a project leader for the North Texas Food Bank event at ESD. Amanda is also a member of the Water Council which raises money for wells in Nicaragua, and she plays volleyball and soccer.

AlumniNow Young Alumni Help Lamplighter Shine Lamplighter’s young alumni sponsored their fourth annual Car Wash last May. Contributions from the successful fundraiser will be applied to the School’s Land Fund. The Car Wash, started in 2011, has evolved into “an exciting and enjoyable event,” said Dr. Joan Hill, Lamplighter’s Head of School. The event was an overwhelming success, according to organizing committee members. About 80 cars were washed by more than 30 volunteers. The committee, made up of high school alumni, directed the well-organized fundraiser. The seven members, who met monthly prior to Saturday’s event, are currently in Upper School. The group included Lamplighter graduates George and Katherine Dau, Joe Durst, Meredith Hessel, Jack Kraus, Whit and Katie Payne, and Jared Steinhart.

In the spring of 2014 Lamplighter’s Director of Advancement, Sandy Diamond, was granted the CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) credential. Diamond joins over 5,000 professionals around the world who hold the CFRE designation. To achieve this designation, CFRE candidates must meet a series of standards set by CFRE International which include tenure in the profession, education, demonstrated fundraising achievement, and a commitment to not-for-profit organizations. They must also pass a rigorous written examination testing the knowledge, skills, and abilities required of a fundraising executive and agree to uphold Accountability Standards and the Donor Bill of Rights.

Report of Annual Giving 2013-2014 Your support makes a significant and positive difference in the lives of Lamplighter children. Dear Lamplighter Community, 2013–2014 was an especially strong year for Lamplighter. Dedicated volunteers worked tirelessly, and generous donors strengthened opportunities for our students and teachers. It was incredibly gratifying to see Trustees, Life Trustees, parents, grandparents, alumni, alumni parents, faculty and staff members, and friends of the school come together to continue to invest in Lamplighter’s mission. The year just past was filled with numerous accomplishments, a few of which are highlighted below: • Annual Fund Chair Catie Enrico led an outstanding Annual Fund campaign breaking school records by raising over $575,600. The faculty and staff achieved 100% participation in just four days before the start of the school year, and parent participation remained high with 95% participation. • Courtney Plumlee provided outstanding leadership of the Lamplighter Parents Association. Countless hours of volunteer time, skills, and creativity added depth to our programs while building a strong, cohesive parent community. Auction Chair Shannon Morse, along with Co-Chairs Brenna Lambert, Karen Lobdell, Selwyn Rayzor, and Laura Trubey, created a most memorable community event, “King of the Road,” raising $283,880 for the Land Fund. • Lamplighter grandparents were offered more opportunities than ever before to participate in campus events and activities. Joan Genender made substantial contributions in her role as Grandparent Chair, to educate and engage this important segment of the Lamplighter community. 28

• Lamplighter’s Alumni Association, led by Kyle Ford ’74, honored two beloved teachers, Sheila McCartor and Juli McGinnis, with the Lamplighter Spirit Award during Alumni Week. Over 150 alumni, faculty, family, and friends gathered to honor these two very special women. • The work of the Pre-Campaign Task Force concluded after the Board accepted their recommendations last September. Following the work of the Task Force, an Architect Search Committee was assembled. Under the capable leadership of board member Leslie Krakow, the Committee conducted a nationwide search for an architect. After narrowing the number of firms throughout the spring, the Committee made a recommendation to the Board in late May. Your support makes a significant and positive difference in the lives of Lamplighter children. Alumni parent and board member Jennifer Karol said it best: “It was Lamplighter that gave my children their strong foundation not only to love learning but to be caring, compassionate citizens of the world.” Please accept my most heartfelt thanks for helping provide Lamplighter students a serious education wrapped in the wonder of childhood. Founders Legacy Society

he Founders Legacy Society recognizes all donors who have chosen to support Lamplighter through planned gifts. The society honors the commitment of Lamplighter’s founders, Natalie Murray and Sandy Swain, whose vision, passion, love of children, and determination created a school where the spirit and joy of learning are ignited in young minds and hearts for a lifetime. To become a member, simply inform the Advancement Office in writing that you have named the school as a beneficiary in your estate plans. It can be as simple as assigning a portion of your life insurance to Lamplighter or adding the school as a beneficiary in your will. You can play a part in sustaining the legacy of our founders while securing the future of the school. Ellen Gustafson is a sustainable food system activist and author of “We the Eaters: If We Change Dinner, We Can Change the World.” James McLurkin is a robotics engineer who worked on projects with Disney Imagineering and iRobot. He was recognized by Time as one of America’s top engineers. Adam Braun is a New York Times bestselling author and founder of Pencils of Promise, an organization that has built 200 schools around the world.
