Drawing the Line Getting rid of homophobia and transphobia

1

Homophobia and transphobia are rooted in irrational fear that leads to hatred, victimisation & intolerance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people 2

Using the word “gay” as an insult is homophobic

3

Calling someone ‘gay’ as a way of suggesting there is something ‘wrong’ with being lesbian or gay is homophobic 4

Mocking people for making choices or behaving that don’t fit your assumptions about gender stereotypes is transphobic 5

In the UK homophobic and transphobic behaviour is recognised in law as a hate crime 6

Being on the receiving end of homophobia and transphobia hurts.... & you don’t need to be lesbian gay or transgender to suffer homophobia and transphobia 7

FACT: People do not choose their sexual orientation. People do not choose to be lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender 8

FACT: People DO choose to be homophobic 9

10

YOU can challenge homophobia when you hear or witness it 11

YOU can respect your friend’s privacy. It is their sexual orientation, their sexuality, and not your information to share 12

YOU should not assume that everyone is heterosexual 13

YOU should not expect boys or girls to behave in stereotyped ways 14

If YOU are experiencing homophobic or transphobic bullying or know someone who is… report it to a adult …DON’T be silent. 15

Support and value your friends and fellow students for who they really are. 16
