Thoughts from the Pastor

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Volunteers are the back-bone of our parish community. They are unsung heroes who are willing to share their time, talents and energy to help in many of our parish events. We thank especially all the parishioners who baked and enjoyed the sale. It is because of your effort that the parish was able to make over $600. The funds generated from these events go a long way in helping our parish offset the expenses that we encounter daily mostly due to our aged buildings. I want to thank Mr. David Grayson (aka “Milo the Magician”) who entertained the kids of all ages with a magic show. Thanks to Sandy Adams for your craft station that included lent coloring books for all the children. Thanks to Tom and Carol Frank for organizing a raffle of gift cards, and Eliza Mathews for organizing the door prizes. Thanks also to Andrea and Steve Legatzke for making sure that the event ran smoothly. Last but not least thanks to Marie and Bern Wheel for setting up. This week we lost two members of our parish community, the late Mr. Thomas Butler Jr. and Dick Bell. Mr. Butler, both long time members of our community. Their Funeral Liturgies were celebrated here this past week. Please pray for their souls and their families. In 2012, our parish was permitted to use the Annual Catholic Appeal for debt reduction. The funds that we raised will be used to reduce the parish debt at the Archdiocesan Bank. In addition, the Archdiocese has matched, dollar for dollar; the funds raised up to the amount of the debt and applied that distribution to our debt as well. Below are the specific details and final distributions for our parish. 2011 Goal: Total Funds Raised: Total Matching Funds: Total Debt Relief: 1st Distribution (June 2012): 2nd Distribution (October 2012): 3rd Distribution (March 2013):

$25,225.00 $61,225.00 $61,226.00 $122,452.00 $68,142.00 $36,810.00 $17,500.00

Thanks so much for your continuous and generous support. I am confident that we will continue to do well during this year’s Catholic Annual Appeal. If we exceed our goal, which is $25,225.00, we receive 100% of the extra raised. In case you have a loved one in the hospital or at home who needs to be anointed or receive communion, please do not hesitate to call the rectory. We have a small but dedicated pastoral staff who will arrange to come and visit your loved ones. We do offer confessions on appointment. Please make use of this important sacrament especially during this period of lent.

- Fr. George Omwando

PARISH SPRING RAFFLE Today’s liturgy continues the message of forgiveness and reconciliation that we heard last week. The Church seems to be doing its utmost to deliver one simple message: “Your sins are forgiven!” What good news this is! Isaiah declares that God’s saving action on our behalf is not something trapped in the past, but here and now. Paul urges us to recognize that true life is not “won” by following laws, however strictly, but is a free gift of God. Thus, our focus must be on the future, not on past misdeeds. Our eyes must be on the prize of life forever with God. In the Gospel, Jesus is challenged to demonstrate that he is a law-keeper, but he knows that this is a trap. If he counsels mercy, he will be declared an opponent of the law. If he follows the law and condones its punishment, he will be denounced as an inciter to murder. Jesus decides to do neither. Instead, he turns the tables and invites the crowd to forgo “legality” for the sake of forCopyright © J. S. Paluch Co. giveness and reconciliation.

Will You Be My Prayer Partner? As you leave church you’ll see a sign at both the Washington and Austin exits, which reads “Will you Be My Prayer Partner?” There is a basket under the sign containing the names of our children who will be celebrating 1st Reconciliation, 1st Eucharist, or Confirmation in April. Won’t you take a name or two and keep that young person in prayer as s/he continues preparations to celebrate the Sacraments? Thank you!

Next weekend, many churches provide palms to be carried in the opening moments of the liturgy, as we gratefully recall Jesus’ entry into the holy city of Jerusalem. The children who greeted him on that day used what was both handy and traditional, since palms were carried to inaugurate the joyful harvest feast of Succoth. To this day, faithful Jews are directed to take a beautiful palm branch, green and straight as possible, called a lulav, and bind it with three myrtle branches fifteen inches long, and two longer willow branches. In Italy, everyone carries olive branches today, often brought from their own garden. In England, forsythia branches are preferred, a relative of the olive, sign of peace. Germans prefer pussywillows, and others look for flowering spring branches. In our part of the world, what do you think would be the best choice to express joy and welcome, and to remind us of the joy of Christ’s victory even as we prepare to commemorate his passion? —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Like the gospel scribes and Pharisees, I tend to be selfrighteous when . . .  I remain with Jesus when . . . The new life I receive from him is . . . EACH WEEK “INTRODUCTIONS” TO THE 1ST AND 2ND READINGS FOR THE UPCOMING SUNDAY ARE OFFERED. THEIR SOLE PURPOSE IS TO HELP US ALL OF US “RECEIVE” AND “HEAR” THE WORD OF GOD.

MARCH 23-24 2013 PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-7 Chapters 40-55 of the book of Isaiah contain the message of a prophet who spoke to God’s people during their exile in Babylon. Several times the prophet speaks about a Servant who will one day deliver God’s people. Because the Servant is portrayed as suffering, Christians have traditionally identified Jesus with him. Second Reading: Philippians 2:6-11 In the years following Christ’s death and resurrection, Christians began to develop the prayers and hymns that would become part of their rituals. In this passage from the letter to the Philippians, Paul appears to be quoting an early Christian hymn celebrating the dying and rising of Christ.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS Every Friday of Lent in our Church at 7:00 PM

PAKISTAN In Pakistan, CRS works with local partners to ensure that communities have access to clean, safe water sources for both domestic and livelihood use. The installation of latrines in the community also helps to raise awareness about the importance of good hygiene practices. CRS helps communities to rehabilitate and reconstruct flood-damaged irrigation systems, which help farmers to improve their crop yields and support their families. Following the 2011 floods in Pakistan, CRS distributed hygiene kits and clean water provisions to families affected by the emergency. In your prayer this week, reflect on the ways that God has invited you to bend low in humility to learn important truths about yourself and the world. How has God been waiting for you in places you did not want to explore?

Every Tuesday at 10 AM here at St. Catherine of Siena / St. Lucy’s Rectory. In the Fifth Sunday of Lent, John's gospel brings us the story of the woman accused of adultery. Religious leaders bring a woman to Jesus challenging him: “Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women.” Jesus responded only, “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” The crowd quietly dispersed. Jesus seeing there is no one left to accuse the woman says gently, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin any more.”

The Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass will be held on Sunday, September 22, 2013, at 2:45 PM, at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 North State Street, Chicago, Illinois. Couples married in 1963 interested in attending this celebration should contact their parish to register. For further information call the Family Ministries Office at 312.534.8351 or visit the website: www.familyministries.org.

The Eucharist is God’s mercy generously given to us. How am I a sign of God’s same mercy to others?

Our Parish School

Come join our school children for prayer during Holy Week. On Tuesday, March 26th at 12:15 PM there will be a “Living Stations of the Cross”; and on Wednesday, March 27th at 10:30 AM we will have a Mass in honor of the Triduum. Year of Sunday Mass / Year of Faith KNOW THE MASS, ONE WORD AT A TIME

We die in and through our celebration of Mass. It sounds strange, but it’s true. We need to start with our Baptism. This is how Saint Paul describes our Baptism: “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:3 – 4). Each time we celebrate Mass, as Saint Paul says elsewhere, we proclaim the death of the Lord, we join him once more in his dying so as to rise with him. At Mass, we keep renewing our baptismal immersion into his death, until one day — at the moment of our physical death — we fully surrender ourselves into his hands to be raised up by him. In every Mass, we take hold of our life and anticipate our death and resurrection to the fullness of life. Archdiocese of Chicago

CHURCH HISTORY This Conclave was history in the making. It gave us an opportunity to view the process from a Catholic perspective. Pray that the new elected Pope Francis I be active and involved in all issues concerning our Church and that God guide him through this most important endeavor.

Fifth Sunday of Lent I consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. — Philippians 3:8

VOCATIONS Paul has been “taken possession of by Christ.” Knowing that he belongs to Christ gives Paul the courage he needs to persevere. Knowing that we belong to Christ gives us courage as well. If you have ever thought about a vocation to priesthood, consider attending the next Exploring Priesthood Weekend retreat held on April 12-14, 2013 at Mundelein Seminary to learn about the possibilities of diocesan priesthood in Chicago. For information contact Fr. Brian Welter at 312-534-8298 or at [email protected] or go to www.ChicagoPriest.com.
