LOT 31 BLACKONTRACK, the “SHOW PONY” Donated by Moore Angus, Raymond and Carol Moore, Lufkin, TX We looked and looked for another “all-around” horse to measure up to 2008’s Angus Foundation Gala ranch horse feature from the Four Sixes, who topped the auction at $35,000. Leave it to all-around great guy Raymond Moore to jump in to sponsor the real ‘looker’ for our 2010 event. Raymond sure knows a “show pony” (his word for a hot chick!) when he sees one, and he guarantees that this jet black stallion with white mane, tail and blaze is an all-around show-stopper! While this mount may not be a Thoroughbred, he’s dern sure thoroughly CUTE and completely one-of-a-kind. Plus, he’s a gentle, patient “kid horse” who’ll teach your child to ride like Calvin Borel! Designed and handpainted by artist Kelli Fitzpatrick, this 1940s vintage “show pony” was recreated especially to be the mascot of the 2010 Angus Foundation Gala & Auction at Churchill Downs. An antique children’s toy, he has been refinished and stands ready to hit the track. He’s also trained in the pasture gathering yearlings – just like 2008’s “Sandy Bob” in OKC, “Blackontrack” does it all! (Bill Casner may even agree to stand him at stud when his illustrious career is complete!) “Blackontrack” comes with a specially constructed, sturdy box that will protect him on his ride home in a showstock trailer headed to a point within driving distance of your stable. Julie French will help you line up the transportation among the exhibitors at the North American! Look no further, horsey folks – here’s the ultimate “fast friend” perfect for anyone in need of a very fancy, trusty steed!

LOT 32 BLACKONTRACK NAME FOR AAA REGISTRY Donated by the Angus Foundation Event Steering Committee Since the first promotion for “BLACKONTRACK!” was launched, we’ve heard lots of people say “hey, that’s a GREAT name for a bull!” We took the next step back in March and “protected” the exclusive use of this name for you with the American Angus Association Registration Department. The name “BLACKONTRACK!” and its original logo type sells in its entirety as the last lot of the evening because we’re done...and we don’t need it anymore!

When B.R. Pierce first saw Angus cattle at the Illinois State Fair in the 1870s, he declared that they “filled the eye.” In 1881, B.R. Pierce began breeding Angus at Woodlawn Farms in Creston, Illinois. The Pierces farmed, but only to provide feed for the cattle. Their Angus herd of never more than 125 cows was the only source of income for the family for four generations.Ten years after the birth of the American Angus Association, B.R.’s son Stanley R. (S.R.) Pierce took Woodlawn-bred “Wellington” to the world’s fair, known as the World’s Columbian Exhibition of 1893, and won grand champion Angus bull. In 1900, S.R. exhibited a purebred Angus steer (a double-bred Wellington) at the first International Live Stock Exposition at Chicago. The steer “Advance” earned the coveted title grand champion of the show and was presented the silver “grand champion cup” as his prize. He weighed 1,480 lbs. and sold for the record-setting price of $150 per hundredweight. The reserve to the grand champion,“Good Times,” was another Angus steer also bred and shown by the Pierces of Woodlawn! For over ten decades, Woodlawn’s pursuit of perfection set a high standard of excellence for the Angus breed. Along with breeding, developing and selling champion stock, the Pierces were also generous with their time and leadership talent. In the early years of the American Angus Association, B.R. served on the board and as vice president; his son S.R. served as president in 1912. A third generation leader was S.R.’s son Lewis Blanford (L.B.) PIerce who served as president in 1959. He was also the last president of the International Live Stock Exposition. L.B. Pierce often reminded his children Blanford, Norris, and Susan,“the Angus breed has done so much for our family, if you ever have the opportunity to give back, give back.” In 2005, Blanford and Joan Pierce funded a $25,000 educational endowment with the Angus Foundation to provide the annual Woodlawn scholarship to Angus youth. When Blanford was inducted into the prestigious Angus Heritage Foundation in November, 2007 he became the fourth generation of his family to receive the honor. Upon accepting the award he surprised the banquet crowd by announcing another generous gift from the Pierce family – from a simple shopping bag he drew out the historic and highly treasured “Woodlawn trophy” from the 1900 International Live Stock Exposition and gave it to the archives of the Angus Foundation. The Pierce family has cherished their oil painting of “Advance” and the trophy he won as a legacy from their ancestors, and a symbol of the Woodlawn code of conduct. Blanford remembers being taught from a very young age “the value of unquestioned honesty, the importance of one’s reputation among one’s peers, and the immense satisfaction to be found in solid friendships and customer loyalty.” The steer “Advance” was sold by the pound in 1900. The final “Chicago International” was held in 1975. Woodlawn Farms, America’s oldest ongoing Angus herd, drastically downsized in 2005. So, what meaning could a shiny show trophy and an oil painting possibly hold for us in today’s world? Through two World Wars, the Great Depression, several agricultural depressions, and the “influence” of 19 different U.S. presidents...through marriages, babies being born, college educations, serious illnesses and untimely deaths...through “belt-buckle” bulls, and the “elephants,” and big shifts in selection when EPDs hit the scene...through board and staff changes in St. Joe, and valued customers going out of business...through 12 decades, with never more than 125 cows, four generations of an Angus family not only made their living from the Angus breed, they made quality lives that were truly enriched by the responsibility they took and the integrity they showed.

In their relentless pursuit of perfection, the Pierces of Woodlawn Farms have truly “advanced the Angus breed” for over one hundred twenty-five years.
