KIRKWOOD FOUNDATION 2013 ANNUAL REPORT

Real World Progress

| Opening

Dear friends, This was a year of real world progress at the Kirkwood Foundation! Thanks to your support, we announced on May 30, 2013, that the Real World Success fundraising campaign raised $18.7 million, more than 50 percent over the campaign goal of $12.5 million. Nearly $11 million of these funds will be used for student scholarships, accelerating a trend that has seen the college’s scholarship program triple in the past decade. We’re proud of these results, but we’re even prouder of the impact scholarships make on our students’ lives. Our internal research shows that Kirkwood students who receive scholarships are more than twice as likely to graduate in three years as those who don’t. And we know that by reducing students’ concerns about debt, we help remove a significant barrier to achievement. Last spring we reached a new benchmark for Kirkwood, when nearly 3,000 students graduated from our college degree, diploma and certificate areas, plus our GED and adult education programs. What a great sign of learner success! Because of your support, during the academic year 2013-2014 the Kirkwood Foundation will award $2.6 million in scholarships to deserving students. We look forward to seeing that number top $3 million before many more years have passed. At Kirkwood, we are serious about achieving the college mission to identify community needs, provide accessible, quality education and training, and promote opportunities for lifelong learning – all of which strengthen our regional economy. The Real World Success campaign drew 2,100 donors, nearly 1,000 of them new alumni donors who believe in this mission. The Gazette described the campaign results as “a powerful testimonial to Kirkwood’s effectiveness.” Thank you for your support, and thank you for your confidence in Kirkwood. Sincerely,

Mick Starcevich President, Kirkwood Community College

Kathy L. Hall, CFRE Vice President, Development, Kirkwood Community College Executive Director, Kirkwood Foundation

Tippie was presented with the Legacy Award, Kirkwood’s highest honor, given to an individual who exemplifies leadership and involvement in philanthropy. Kirkwood Alumni & Friends presented the second annual Celebration of Success April 4, 2013, recognizing distinguished alumni, business partners and leaders in higher education. Honorees included: Diamond V, President’s Award; Jeff Mitchell, Dean of Industrial Technologies, Trustees’ Award; and Delaine Petersen, Julie Poeltler and Mickey Kinzenbaw, Outstanding Alumni. The Kirkwood Endowed Chairs were established to honor President Emeritus Norm Nielsen upon his retirement.

Holocaust survivor Renee Firestone spoke at several Cedar Rapids locations in late April 2013. The Kirkwood event was canceled due to inclement weather, but free events at Mount Mercy and Coe were offered to all. The events were sponsored in part by the Kirkwood Foundation’s Holocaust Program Fund and Kirkwood‘s Social Sciences department. On April 30, biological anthropologist Hannah Marsh was the presenter at the annual Oliven Lecture. This lecture was founded in 1977 in memory of Mel Oliven, long time Astronomy and Physics professor at Kirkwood. It is made possible by the Oliven Endowment of the Kirkwood Foundation. The annual President’s Circle reception was held in combination with the Real World Success campaign celebration May 30, 2013.

Pre-engineering student awarded Kirkwood scholarship

A

chieving is nothing new for Tamara Mull. This freshman defines the promise of Kirkwood: making the most of what you’ve got. Growing up on a farm near Monticello with her grandparents, Tamara learned early to push to overcome obstacles. Her mother taught her determination; she was a single mom raising four kids, living with her parents while she attended the University of Northern Iowa. As the oldest of four, Tamara helped shoulder responsibility. Her grandfather was another great role model. “Growing up with my grandpa is where I picked up the character traits I possess: perseverance, responsibility, honesty and respect above all,” Tamara says. “I’d do anything to make him proud.”

“The scholarship made the biggest difference ever,” Tamara says. “It was the biggest weight off my shoulders. And the letter about the scholarship arrived on my birthday! That was the best birthday present ever.”

In fourth grade, Tamara’s family moved to Marion, where the pace of school was more intense. She was shy and didn’t ask questions. She struggled with math until middle school, when her math teacher helped her turn the corner. In high school, she began to shine. “I pushed myself to double up on math courses my sophomore year, which allowed me to take AP calculus my senior year,” Tamara recalls. “I never took the easy courses. I put myself in all the advanced math and English classes.” She was on the honor roll, won a Math and Science Award, joined cheerleading, track, Robotics Club and was on Marion’s First Tech Challenge team. Her boyfriend’s mom, an engineer at Rockwell, encouraged Tamara to apply for a Rockwell engineering internship. She didn’t receive it but she was one of two Marion students chosen to take two introductory engineering courses through Rockwell. “I realized I really was good at math,” Tamara notes. “I started to gain my confidence.”

This fall, Tamara’s in her first semester at Kirkwood in pre-engineering, with plans to earn a four-year degree in Civil Systems Engineering, with a minor in Business. She also won a Giacoletto Foundation Scholarship from the Kirkwood Foundation to help with school expenses. “The scholarship made the biggest difference ever,” Tamara says. “It was the biggest weight off my shoulders. And the letter about the scholarship arrived on my birthday! That was the best birthday present ever.” Tamara had considered Iowa State University, but worried about the cost. “A lot of my friends were planning to go to Kirkwood for their general education credits. I heard good things about Kirkwood,” she recalls. “I asked a career counselor about it and he said it was the best way to go.” Ultimately, Tamara’s dream is to work for Disney as an imagineer – someone who designs rides for Disney World. She dreams big, but that’s what her grandpa would want. He died this summer, but not before seeing Tamara’s Kirkwood acceptance letter and scholarship award. “When he saw my scholarship letter, his eyes just lit up,” Tamara says. “He took a picture of the letter and put it on Facebook.” She knows he’s with her in spirit, proud of her determination.

Ryan Delaney gets it done

S

ince high school, the Kirkwood/ Iowa alumnus has managed an ambitious to-do list.

When Ryan Delaney played quarterback in high school football, he learned to read the field and take advantage of game opportunities. That was also true when a summer banking internship in his native Fort Madison became a chance for a year-round job. Eight years later, Ryan continues to move his life and career forward. He applied a kind of hurry-up offense game plan to his college studies and is advancing in his commercial banking role at US Bank in Cedar Rapids. He also balances more education while embracing a growing role in the community.

“I was accepted at every state school, but I recognized the cost savings available at Kirkwood. I was also impressed with the easy transition to the Tippie School of Business at the University of Iowa. And, the location was perfect.”

Ryan Delaney grew up in the historic river city of Fort Madison, Iowa and stayed busy with year-round sports and student clubs like the Business Professionals of America. That organization gave him a lead on a summer internship with a MidWest One Bank branch. When the summer ended, the job didn’t. The bank offered him a chance to continue working there through his senior year. His girlfriend, Kim was already a student at Kirkwood in Cedar Rapids, so Ryan gave us a look. “I was accepted at every state school, but I recognized the cost savings available at Kirkwood. I was also impressed with the easy transition to the Tippie School of Business at the University of Iowa. And, the location was perfect,” he said. Ryan appreciated and benefitted from the prestigious Kirkwood Leaders for Tomorrow scholarship, plus other scholarships from Fort Madison organizations when he graduated in 2006. He also found a full-time job at Bank of the West in Cedar Rapids, while balancing a full class load. Three semesters into his Kirkwood studies, he sensed the time was right to transition into studies at the Tippie School of Business. Ryan said the step from Kirkwood to Iowa “orchestrated well” and he kept his ambitious pace in Iowa City.

“I usually had classes at 8 and 9 a.m., then I went to work. My manager was very understanding and flexible and let me start at 10 at the bank,” Ryan recalled. “Then I usually picked up an evening class at 6 or later. I was able to complete my studies at the university in three more semesters.” Fast-forward a few years, and Ryan Delaney is well established in Cedar Rapids. His girlfriend Kim is now his wife. She completed her baccalaureate degree at Mount Mercy University and teaches at All Saints Elementary on the southeast side of Cedar Rapids. For a clue into Ryan’s main diversion and passion in life, all you have to do is take note of their pet collie’s name. Manti. “Yep, that’s as in Manti Te’o of Notre Dame,” he said with a smile. “My uncle was a Notre Dame graduate and I have loved the football team and its legacy for as long as I can remember.” Between work and home responsibilities plus the occasional road trip to South Bend, Ryan is also part-way through his graduate studies for an MBA at the Tippie School of Business in its downtown Cedar Rapids location—right across the street from his US Bank office. “That is mighty convenient, for sure,” he said. “I really enjoy the classes, the mix of really sharp and smart people I meet there. I love the atmosphere of capable people, all working toward a good goal.” As he looks to the future, he sees a lot more potential in his work at US Bank. “I really enjoy being part of such a dedicated, accomplished team. Working on such a strong team accelerates each person’s individual growth. Plus, commercial banking is a great fit for me. It is all about valuing and cultivating relationships. Business leaders have a great deal of pride and passion. It’s contagious. I truly enjoy working with them as they evolve and move toward their strategic goals,” he added.

2013 Celebration of Success Recipients President’s Award Diamond V Mills received the 2013 President’s Award. The company and its leaders are models of community champions as well as Kirkwood supporters. The company has been led by the Bloomhall family since 1943, a manufacturer of animal nutrition products marketed across the U.S. and in many international markets. Diamond V has generously funded Kirkwood student scholarships for more than two decades and is a campus-based partner with its nutrition research center that also houses the college’s animal health labs and classrooms.

Trustee’s Award The 2013 Trustee’s award was given to a distinguished college leader. Jeff Mitchell came to Kirkwood not long after graduating from the University of Northern Iowa. Since 1978 he has led innovative programs that link local industries to current training and newly invented curriculum and methods. His unique perspectives have bridged private sector needs with student learning and success for well over three decades. “Knowledgeable,” “respected,” “progressive” and “visionary” are words we heard throughout the Corridor when people talk about Jeff.

Kirkwood Distinguished Alumni Award Delaine Petersen is a tireless advocate for individuals and their families who seek to move past disabilities to more complete lives. She brought wisdom and community connections from the private sector and K-12 education to a growing leadership role with the ARC of Linn County. She took her Kirkwood degree to Mount Mercy College, earning a baccalaureate degree in 1982. Since the late 1980s Delaine has helped thousands of individuals with disabilities make progress in work and life skills while supporting their family and friends in the shared efforts of daily life.

Since the early 1980s she has operated Julie’s Fountain of Flowers in Lone Tree. Julie also holds the status of Iowa Master Florist and plays leadership roles with the American Institute of Floral Design at the state and national levels. She also serves her alma mater on the Floral Careers professional advisory board.

The Gift of Affirmation

W

“Kirkwood is serving a great need for education by minding the gap, helping some students into a career in just two years while providing others what they need through professional Continuing Education courses.”

hen asked how he got involved in so many local endeavors, Gary Rozek answers simply, “I said yes.”

together after the ’08 flood was a labor of love. My grandfather came over from Czechoslovakia. I love its mission and how special it is to Cedar Rapids.”

Born and raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and the second of seven siblings, he’s a man deeply rooted in family and community life. Rozek finds that Kirkwood mirrors his enthusiasm for tackling innovative and entrepreneurial projects. (Included in a long list of cutting-edge educational efforts, Kirkwood has built a wind turbine, a winery, a world-class teaching hotel and a regionally recognized healthcare simulation center with no indication of slowing the growth of such innovations.)

Kirkwood is an important beneficiary of Rozek’s philanthropy. He’s a longtime member of the Facilities Foundation board and, in addition to personal gifts to the Kirkwood Foundation, he’s established both the Centro Endowed Scholarship and the Gary Rozek Endowed Golf Scholarship, both of which will support our students forever.

“Kirkwood is serving a great need for education by minding the gap, helping some students into a career in just two years while providing others what they need through professional Continuing Education courses,” Rozek asserts. Rozek should know. He is the Chairman of Centro, a company founded by his father in 1970, which supports the needs of original equipment manufacturers for custom rotationally molded products. “Centro has used Kirkwood’s 260E program for on-the-job employee training. Also, a number of new employees have come to work at Centro after completing the advanced manufacturing program offered by a partnership between Kirkwood and Mount Mercy University.” Rozek’s role at Centro is just one of the many hats Rozek dons in the Corridor. He’s also served as board president for the National Czech and Slovak Museum, and was a driving force behind the museum’s renovation and move to higher ground: “Putting it back

“I was facing some tough decisions for the upcoming year in prioritizing my goals, and finances are certainly a large consideration as I work towards earning my degree,” reveals Kirkwood student Brian Schreck in his letter of thanks for receiving the 2013-2014 Gary Rozek Endowed Golf Scholarship. “This will make it possible for me to continue my pursuit of two things very dear to me: my desire to one day serve the public as a police officer and to continue to represent Kirkwood Community College as a member of the golf team.” Rozek has played golf for most of his life, and at one time considered pursuing the sport professionally. Why did he want to create a golf scholarship? “There are many life lessons in the sport. It teaches you honesty, discipline, etiquette, sportsmanship and integrity.” It’s clear these are lessons Rozek learned well.
