SCHOLARSHIP INSTRUCTIONS Detroit Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, Detroit Renaissance District Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee Purpose of the Scholarship Fund The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund exists to honor Rev. King's ministry and perpetuate his Christian values, particularly for the benefit of students and community within the Detroit Renaissance District of the United Methodist Church. Scholarship recipients may be awarded up to $1,000 at the discretion of the Celebration Committee. Application Requirements 1. Submission of the Application Form by High School Seniors or College Students 2. Submission of Two Letters of Recommendation: a letter from your pastor and a letter from another adult such as a leader in your church, teacher, or counselor. These should attest to the applicant's membership and participation in the United Methodist Church as well as their adherence to Rev. King's values. 3. Submission of an essay (typed, double-spaced, 12 point, up to 1500 words in Times New Roman) describing how the words and ministry of Rev. King have inspired you. How are you keeping his dream alive? Alternatively, how are you helping to create the "Great World House?" It is important to base your essay on your experiences and actions. (Note: an alternative submission could be a shorter essay of 500 words plus a poem, rap, song, art project, speech, or sermonette.) Evaluation Criteria 1. Evidence that the applicant understands Rev. King's ministry, his dream, his Christian values, and/or great world house. 2. Examples of an applicant's actions that implement Rev. King's ministry, his dream, and/or great world house. 3. Writing that expresses how an applicant has been inspired by Rev. King and is likely to inspire others.

Detroit Renaissance District 22nd Celebration Honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Sunday, January 10, 2016 Trenton First United Methodist Church, 3:00 p.m. Dear Drum Major for Justice Awardees (1995-2015), The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. dreamed, talked, and demonstrated to build a "World house." "This is the great new problem of mankind. We have inherited a big house, a great 'World house' in which we have to live together - black and white, Easterners and Westerners, Gentiles and Jews, Catholics and Protestants, Moslem and Hindu, a family unduly separated in ideas, culture, and interests who, because we can never again live without each other, must learn, somehow, in this one big world, to live with each other." (MLK, 1964) We invite you to help build the "World House" in three ways. 1 - Attend the 22nd MLK Celebration on Sunday, January 10, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. The celebration will feature inspiring music, an original "World House" drama, and presentation of scholarships and awards followed by refreshments. We are pleased to be "downriver" for the first time in our 22 years. 2 - Nominate a clergy and/or layperson whose actions demonstrate a commitment to the values of Rev. King and building a "Great World House" to be named a "Drum Major for Justice." (Please submit a one page Nomination describing your nominee's actions honoring Rev. King's values.) The costs of college education have increased; therefore, we want to give scholarships of up to $1,000. Your gift is an investment in future generations who can honor Dr. King and make a faithful difference.
